The Fund raiser Luncheon with the Dalai Lama for the Tibetan Community Center

His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in New York, and I was so fortunate to be given an audience again at the hotel. I became very emotional this time because it had been quite a challenging six months preparing for a fund raiser luncheon for the Tibetan Community Center which the Office of Tibet had requested me to help organize. So, to me, meeting him was such a special reward.　

NYにお着きになったダライラマ法王との謁見の機会をまた与えていただきました。今回は特に感動してし泣いてしまった私。チベット政府から依頼され、チベタンコミュニティーセンター（学校）設立のためのベネフィットランチョンをオーガナイズして半年経ちましたが、それはそれはチャレンジングな経験だったので、ダライラマとお会いできたことは最高のご褒美となったのです。

The special luncheon was held at Le Bernardin, one of the best restaurants in America. The celebrity chef owner Eric Ripert (photo) was so generous to host the entire luncheon. When I first asked him if he could collaborate with me to organize the luncheon he said to me, "Don't worry, I will take care of it." I was thrilled and it was such a great start! My friend, Champa (photo) and I worked so hard for 6 months to prepare for this big event. His Holiness totally supported this event and told us that it was so important to do this. There were some difficult moments, but his support inspired us to endure.

ランチョンはアメリカでトップのル・ベルナルダンで開催されました。以前から友人だったセレブシェフオーナーエリックリペール（写真）に相談すると、すぐに「全部僕に任せて」と言ってくれたのでした。彼は昔からダライラマ法王の大ファンで仏教徒でもあるのです。チベット人の友人チャンパ（写真）にも協力してもらい、色々とたいへんな想いもしましたが、そのたびにダライラマの言葉を思い出して乗り越えることができました。

Right after his teaching at the Radio City Music Hall the Dalai Lama arrived at the restaurant. 125 guests were already seated and patiently waiting for him. He gave a long and inspiring speech pointing out how important it is to maintain the Tibetan culture and language. It is vital to the preservation of the Tibetan identity to build the Tibetan Community Center where Tibetans can gather and maintain their unique culture and at which the Tibetan children can study their own language.

ラジオシティミュージックホールでのティーチングを終えてすぐにレストランにいらしたダライラマ法王をすでに待っていたのは１２５人の参加者ゲストの皆さん。法王様は、教育の重要さや、チベットの独特の文化や言葉を守って行くために、いかにこのセンターが大切かなど、非常にインスパイアされるお話を熱心に長い間されました。

坂本龍一さんも素適な奥様と共に来てくださいました。Renowned music composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor, Sheltering Sky, etc.) and his wife joined us, too.

And, Chuck Close. It was such a pleasure to meet those wonderful creative artists who support the Tibet cause! Then, after some Q & A the Dalai Lama had to go back to the teaching. As he was leaving the restaurant we all lined up to greet him. I made sure that all the hard working backstage staff had a chance to meet him, too.

I encouraged my Tibetan friend who had made the video presentation to come forward so that he could greet His Holiness. He shyly did so, and as His Holiness saw him he came up to my friend and shook his hands!

Then His Holiness looked at me and said to me in Tibetan,

"You are the artist who draws beautiful drawings!"

What a gift that was. Thank you, His Holiness. We will build a center for 7,000 Tibetans in New York!

そしてコンテンポラリーアートのビッグスター、チャッククロース（写真）。彼もダライラマの大ファンで参加してくれました。このような素晴らしい芸術家たちがチベットを支援してくださっていることに感謝感激です！

ランチョンの最後、ダライラマ法王がお帰りになる時、キッチンにいたスタッフたちにも外に出て来てもらいました。ダライラマ法王はいつも、裏方で働く人たちにも挨拶をして下さるという気配りをしておられるからです。思いもよらぬ展開にキッチンスタッフも大喜びしてくれました。そして、ビデオプレゼンをした私のチベタンの友人も、出口あたりでモジモジしていたので、彼の背中を押してあげると、それを見たダライラマは、彼の方へ寄って来て握手をしてくれたのでした。友人が感激していたのは言うまでもありません！そしてダライラマは私の方へいらっしゃると、こうチベット語で言ってくださいました。

「貴女は美しい絵を描く画家ですね！」

これ以上に素晴らしい褒め言葉はありません。ありがとうございます、ヒズホーリネス！！！７千人いるNYのチベット人たちのためにセンター（学校）を建てますよ！

Richard Gere, a devoted Buddhist and Tibet activist

Today I was fortunate to be given a short audience with the Dalai Lama early in the morning. Of course I got there one hour early. I always get so excited when His Holiness is in town! While I was waiting in the waiting room Richard came and we talked about "Hachi," his movie about a dog in Japan. Then we talked about my books, etc. We laughed a lot. Around His Holiness everyone is happy. Richard is a committed activist for Tibet and I truly respect his amazing work. He is a big inspiration for us, indeed.

今朝はNYにいらしているダライラマ法王と謁見の機会をいただき、予定の時間より一時間も早く着いてしまった私、、。いつもダライラマがいらっしゃるとウキウキしてしまうのです。待合室にいるとリチャードギアが近寄って来ておしゃべりを始めました。ちょうど「ハチ公」を見ていたので、その話や私の絵本の話、、。

（リチャードは私が作った結核の絵本をよく見ているそうです）ダライラマ法王のまわりにいると、皆が自然と笑顔になり幸せな気分になる一時なのです。

Miss USA Rima Fakih 今年のミスアメリカは、、！

Well, well, well...! This year's Miss USA is Rima Fakih, a 24-year-old Lebanese woman from Michigan. I have noticed that she and I have the same initial, "R.F." and long black hair. (Well, that is about it... nothing else in common... she is a knock-out!) I am thrilled to see that this exotic beauty has won the title! Congratulations to you, Rima! (I wanted to post her photo, but could not download any of them online- please google and look her up!)

今年のミスアメリカのタイトルをゲットしたのは、レバノン生まれの２４歳のアメリカ人。なんと名前はリマ。しかもイニシャルまで同じ！R.F.! そして長い真っ黒のノングヘアも一緒。（ま、それだけだけど、、笑。彼女はゴ〜ジャス！！！）長年、いつも金髪青い目のステレオタイプばかりが優勝してきたので、なんだかこんなにエキゾティックなビューティが選ばれたのが嬉しい気分です。リマ、おめでとう〜！（写真ダウンロードできませんでした。グーグルで見てみてくださいね）

Strolling New York ニューヨークをぶらぶら

Bryant Park near the New York Public Library is one of my favorite spots in the city. It is so beautiful and romantic, and it reminds me of Le Jardin du Luxenbourg in Paris. During the summer time they show movies on the grass. People bring blankets, wine and cheese to enjoy the cool summer nights here. NY私立図書館の横にあるブライアントパークは、私のNYお気に入りスポットのひとつです。なんともロマンティックなこの公園は、巴里のリュクサンブール公園を思い出させてくれます。夏はここでフリーの野外映画が見れるんです。チーズやワインを片手に涼しい夜を過すのにぴったり。

As I walked towards south from the park I saw the Dalai Lama on the bus! He is coming to New York next week and we are all excited! 公園を後に南へブラブラと歩いていると、ダライラマ法王が！来週NYへいらっしゃるダライラマ。皆楽しみに待っていますよ〜

Then I realized that I had walked around the city for hours! My feet were killing me and the sky was already dark. Strolling the city without any particular destination... how wonderful this was.
I love this city. 気づけば外はもう真っ暗。数時間も歩いていた私の足が痛みます。でも、こうして目的無しにブラブラお散歩なんて久しぶりでした。ああ楽しかった。ニューヨーク大好き。

Gala at Cipriani チプリアーニでのガラパーティ

Again, it was the annual fundraise gala for a private girls' school in Manhattan last night! The party was held at a fancy legend, Cipriani at the 42nd Street. 毎年恒例の、あるマンハッタンの私立お嬢様学校のためのガラパーティが、かのチプリアーニで行われました。

As every year I donated my print. This year was my personal piece that I had kept called, "Good Night" and I thought that it would be so suitable for the young children's rooms...because it is about peace and love.　毎年、私もファンドレイズのために作品を寄付しているのですが、今年は自分用に大事にとっておいた「おやすみなさい」という版画をプレゼントしました。


The flower arrangement on the table was so lovely! Hydrangeas, peonies, roses... all my favorites! テーブルのお花も見事でした。紫陽花、ピオニー、バラ、、私のお気に入りばかり！


Followed by a tasty beets salad this fish dish arrived. The waiter politely served the fish, potatoes and the asparagus... am I the only one who sees a "face" that is giving me a wink and its tongue sticking out at me??? I was cracking up while a loud live auction was going on. Hope we raised a lot for the school! テイスティーなビーツサラダの後に登場したのは、このメインコース。ウエイターが丁寧に、ポテト、アスパラガス、お魚、、をサーブしてくれました。ウインクしながら下を「べ〜っ」と出している顔に見えるのは私だけ？ライブオークションが騒がしく続く中、つい１人で吹き出していた私でした、、、。学校のために沢山の資金が集まったことを祈っています。

Natural or artificial? 本物？それとも、、、？

Spring in New York. Flowers everywhere. Those colorful roses were so delightful at the market! They looked like as if they were all smiling at me saying, "Take me home with you!" Then, I was intrigued by those colorful hydrangeas. I have seen blue, light green, while and blue purple..., but I have never seen such bright yellow, orange and pink hydrangeas before! This photo below did not capture the intensity of the colors. They rather looked artificial to me... perhaps the florists gave them some colored water (that is how they color the flowers.) Are they for real?

やっと春がやって来たニューヨーク。街中に花、花、花！市場のバラも見事でした。まるで微笑みながら「お家に連れてって！」と言っているように見えます。そしてビックリしたのは、紫陽花。白、青、紫、うすい緑色の紫陽花は普通にみかけますが、この黄色、ピンク、オレンジ、、、！これって、紫陽花の自然な色なのでしょうか？そうだとしたら、私は初めて見ました！上の写真では表現できていませんが、もうそれはそれは強烈な色彩だったんです。だからもしかしたら花屋さんが、色付きの水をやって色を付けたのかなあ、、と思いました。紫陽花は淡い色調のものだとばかり思っていたので、不思議です、、、。

Lovely Sunday Night ラブリーな日曜日の夜

This is definitely how I like to spend a Sunday night...having been fed this incredible meal at my favorite friend's house! My husband and I went to C & K's loft in NoHo for dinner. C is a professional chef and has a company called RASA. She often treats us with her amazing creation of raw food. We brought a bottle of Champagne that we were saving for a special occasion. The first course was Tuna Tartar with Papaya ginger sauce.

日曜日の夜は、親友の家で美味しい手作り料理をいただくのが最高です、、、！ノーホーのロフトでヨガやピラティスを教えているプロのシェフの友人夫婦宅でディナーをいただきました。旦那さんは、大事にとっておいたシャンパンを持って行きました。ファーストコースは、ツナのタルタルとパパイヤとジンジャーのソース。

The Chef did not know that I was allergic to mussels so she prepared some shrimps for me. Some Asian vegetables cooked in coconut sauce with quinoa was so delicious. ムール貝が食べれないことを知らなかった友人シェフは急遽、私のためにエビのグリルを用意してくれました！

C and K ate all the mussels so quickly! They looked so good... how sad that I am allergic to mussels... I must have eaten too many mussels in my past life...
友人夫婦は私の分のムール貝をあっという間に平らげました。美味しそうだったなあ、、、。
きっと前世で私はムール貝を食べ過ぎたのでしょう、、、。

Chai's First Girlfriend? チャイの初のガールフレンド？

Yap, that is my boy Chai! He is so overwhelmed by this beauty, Tama, a French bulldog's passionate kiss! Well, to be honest, we think that Chai is "gay"... that's right, gay. Ever since Chai came to us he has expressed interests in "men." He is rather indifferent with women. His first huge love was for Wally (and still is) and Wally is a boy. However, Chai seems to like Tama and Tama is a girl! I don't care what Chai prefers - we love him as he is!

この可愛いフレンチブルの女の子「たまちゃん」からキスをしてもらって感激しているチャイです！実は、私たち、チャイはゲイだと思うのです。我が家に来て以来ずっと様子を見ていると、確かに興味を示すのは「男」ばかり。人間も犬も「男性」が好きなのです。でも、かまいません、、、ゲイだろうと何だろうと。チャイはチャイのままで大好きよ〜！
