Angels Must Exist! 天使は絶対いる！

I encountered this master piece, "The Discouraged Artist" by Henri Fantin-Latour at the Getty Center in L.A. It is a drawing of an uninspired artist surrounded by supporting angels. Oh, do I know this feeling! As all artists cannot avoid slumps once in a while I know the pain as well. Even sports athletes go through slumps. However, slumps do end eventually, and I do believe that there are angles around us! Perhaps Latour himself was in slump when he drew this. Perhaps he created this beautiful piece praying to end his slump. Now, that is a true artist endurance and spirit!

これはロスアンジェルスのゲティセンター（美術館）に
ある傑作の一枚。アンリ・ファンタン・ラトウールの
「The Discouraged Artist」という作品。勇気を失った
芸術家、、、とでも訳しましょうか。つまりスランプに陥って
悩んでいる画家さんなのです。あ～可哀想。同じ画家と
して辛い経験をした私にはよく分かります、、。アーティスト
なら誰でも知っているこの痛み。スポーツ選手だってそう。
スランプって誰にでもやってくるものなんですネ。でも、
どんなに辛くても、必ず天使が見守ってくれている、、。
私はそう信じています。この絵を描いた画家も、この時
スランプだったのかも知れません。すがる想い、祈る想いから
この素晴らしい作品が誕生したのかも知れませんね。
それこそ真の芸術。そして芸術家の根性だ～！

At the Getty Center, LA ゲティセンター

We went to the Getty Center in LA. This museum was built by Paul Getty, the oil tycoon, and the admission was free based upon his will. How wonderful is that? If I were a billionaire I'd definitely support artists and their arts for sure! I could feel my eye lids trembling as I saw his numerous splendid collection of art. Oh, do I love beautiful things! Among so many breathtaking pieces this caught my eyes - Virgin Mary.

ロスアンジェルスにあるゲティセンター（美術館）に行きました。オイルタイクーンだった
ポールゲティが設立したこの美術館は入場料は無料です。彼の遺言に「一般にただで
見てほしい」とあったそうです。素晴らしい！私も大富豪だったとしたら、芸術家たちを
支援して、芸術を大切すること間違いありません。数多くの素晴らしい作品たちを
観賞できて最高でした。目が潤ってピクピクするのを感じました。美しいもの大好き。
特に、この「バージンメリー」マリア様の彫刻には感動。


Then, something really magical happened. In front of this piece by Jacques-Louis David there was a woman viewing this portrait of the sisters of Napoleon's nieces, and she looked identical of Charlotte Bonaparte (in blue) in the painting!!! My husband was stunned by the resemblance, too, and we wondered if she felt that way, too... How incredible and even spooky that was!

そして凄いことが起こりました。このジャックルイダヴィッドの作品の前で
この絵をじ～っと見入っていたひとりの女性。ふと彼女の顔を見て唖然と
した私です。この女性、絵の右側の女性と瓜二つ！急いで旦那さんに
目で合図すると、彼も仰天していました。なんとも不思議というか、不気味
というか、、。果たしてこの女性、自分でも似てるなあ、、と思いながら
観賞していたのでしょうか？！あ～びっくりした。こんなこともあるんですネ。笑
