My Healty Veggie Life

It's been one year since I have become a compete vegetarian, and I celebrated with my home-made wholewheat rosemary forcaccia. My husband has been a vegetarian for the last 25 years since the day he saw a horrifying animal cruelty in China while he was traveling there. I am so happy that I did not get sick once this year since I stopped eating any meat and fish.

This sad photo above is the reality today. Most animals (cows, pigs and chickens, etc.) do not see the sun light once in their lives because they are born in a factory, never go outside until they are slaughtered. They are put in a tight cage that they cannot even move their bodies. This is the way to mass produce meat to feed the people. Yet, we still don't have enough to feed the world, and we are forced to produce the GMO food. The earth is over populated and it cannot sustain any longer.

My Western medicine doctor who is a vegetarian tells me that there is no proof that
you must have animal protein to be healthy. "It's better not to eat meat/fish today,"
she says. Today's meat contains too much chemicals and hormones, and the fish mercury.
"If you eat organic greens, grains, fruits and nuts it is pretty healthy for your body," she says.

Well, I am not preaching at all here! Everyone is different, and I respect one's choice.
I just feel so happy that I've become a vegetarian because I just simply could not
enjoy eating meat after knowing what the animals go through. Also I don't think it's good
for my body and soul to eat dead animals who suffered so much. And when I thought
about the animals who live in the ocean - who only eat fish to survive and many of them
are dying because there are not enough fish around - I did not want to eat fish anymore
because as a human I have a choice not to.

It's been a heavy topic today, and I shall write about something fun the next time. However, it will make me happy if you can keep this option that I have chosen somewhere in your mind :)

My Treasure from the Himalayas

I received an email from the president of the Tibetan Children's Village in India this morning. It was the last March when I went to India to deliver my books to the Tibetan refugee children, and I had been wondering how they liked them. The email had a huge file of numbers of comments from the children. I was so happy to read them and could not stop crying out of joy.

I'd like to share some of the comments here:

"This is an unique book. This book made us know who we are and that we must do something to preserve our identity."

"This is a very moving, interesting and colorful book. We prefer books like this, so please make another book again. I will be waiting for your next book."

"I was glued to it when I read this book because it made me feel as if I were back in my homeland, Tibet."

"This is a colorful book with many beautiful drawings. I know that only Rima Fujita can draw like this."

"When I was reading this book I felt like I was watching the top 10 Tibetan movies."

"It's an unique book because there are not Tibetan books out there that are suitable for
all ages."

"Interestingly each page is written in three languages so that many children can easily read it."

I thank everyone who supported this project and helped me make the books and send them to
exile.

I feel so grateful and humble to know that my books have been loved and appreciated by
the Tibetan refugee children - some left Tibet, some lost their parents there, and some who were born in exile that they have never seen their own homeland. Our hard work has been utterly worth it!
Thank you♥

June Bride in New York

This piece I did some years ago is called, "Bell," and it is a painting of an actual passage in SoHo near my studio in NoLita. One day I saw a bride in a beautiful gown walking there. "What is she doing here?" Why is she alone?" I kept thinking about her that day, and I saw this scene so that I made into a painting.
I usually paint what I see in my dreams. My dreams are often nightmares, and I wish they were more joyful like this beautiful bride in a dark alley!

My Pernament Collection at a General Hospital

More than twenty pieces of my work have been exhibited at Ushikuaiwa General Hospital's gallery since last October. This is a permanent collection of one of my collectors, a former director of Tokyo Joshidai Hospital. The line up includes my work from twenty years ago up to the present, so that you can see how they have "evolved"over the decades.

As a hospital can be an emotionally heavy place I feel so happy that my art have been bringing light to the visitors. The gallery is open to the general public.

Hugging trees is good for human

I love trees, and I enjoy looking at all kinds of trees while I walk my dog every day.
This photo is a banana tree near my house, and the red flower in the center is huge (about
twice of the size of my head.) Above the flower you can see the green young bananas.
Everyday they get more yellow, and I am hoping to taste one of them :)

The other day, I read the news that hugging trees is good for human, and it has been scientifically
validated. To explain it in one word - trees take in negative energy and convert it into positive.
That is probably why many yogis and sages from the ancient times have been telling their disciples
to meditate near the trees. It makes a perfect sense.

So I hugged a very tall palm tree in Encinitas yesterday. The tree was warm, and while hugging it
I could feel my heart beat echoing through the tree. When I put my hands on the tree I felt the energy flowing throughout the tree, too.

For many years now in my household, the paper towels and paper napkins have been banned.
Trees have been disappearing on earth. Can you imagine our planet without the trees?
How horrifying that is.

New York and Celebrities

I went to see Prince at the Hard Rock Hotel. I saw him at the Madison Square Garden back in the 80's, and at the Budokan in Tokyo in the 90's. Once at Nell's (a famous night club in NYC during the 80's) I met him in person. My boy friend at that time says that I danced with him on the dace floor, but I cannot remember it. All I remember is that he was standing alone by the wall without any body staring at me... so intensely like this photo that I got scared!
No one came up to him to talk at Nell's, and after a while, he left to another venue to give a concert.

It's not rare to see many celebrities if you've lived in NYC for 33 years. However, the New Yorkers don't really make a scene when they see them - there is this unspoken rule about dealing with celebrities here. The New Yorkers keep it cool, and they hardly come up to them to talk to them or to ask for their autographs in order to give them space and respect. So if you see people coming up to the celebrities they are tourists from out of town usually. Lol

So, how do the New Yorkers behave when they see celebrities? I shall tell you a few examples:

One night I was dining with my father at a very trendy restaurant in Upper East side. Tom Cruise and his wife at that time, Nicole Kidman came in. Everyone in the restaurant noticed that, but no one made any big deal out of it. Then, I saw the two women dining next to us did this - they put on their glasses (to see better) quietly, and dropped their napkins on purpose. "Oh, I dropped my napkin!" they mumbled, and as they were picking up the napkin they glanced at the movie star couple.

This is one technique that the New Yorkers use often. There is another one - you say to your dinner companions, "Excuse me, but I must go to the bathroom," or "Excuse me, I have to go and make a phone call," and while you walk towards the bathroom you glace at the celebrities.

New Yorkers always check out the celebrities in a cool manner. Yet, they don't really brag about it either.
"Oh, by the way, I saw Tom Cruise at a restaurant last night." You just mention it as an addition to your other conversation, that's all.

I am one of those cool New Yorkers. I've met so many celebrities over the years, but never took one photo. If I have I'd have a thick photo book by now!
