An amazing documentary 素晴らしいドキュメンタリー

A friend of mine who co-produced and partially filmed this documentary took me to the private press screening today in New York today. It will officially release in NYC on March 31 for two weeks. This film has won several Human Rights awards including the Vaclav Havel Award, Rudolf Vrba Award in Europe and a major one in Mumbai.
It is a good film. Really good. It deeply draws you in and keeps you so interested. It is about the past 51 years of Tibet's struggle under the Chinese occupation. It's about Tibetans' pain, struggle, despair, sorrow, anger, hope and faith. I wept throughout the entire movie. It was so moving to see real people's real pain... that still exists at this moment. This film was seen as such a controversial piece at the Palm Spring International Festival - obviously China did not want the world to see this film about Tibet's struggle- however, it was selected as the best film at the festival and it's been shown throughout the world now.

世界中で多くの賞を受賞し、今注目されている話題作。この映画のプロデューサーでもあり、カメラも一部務めた友人の招待で、今日、プレス関係のみのプライベート試写会に行って来ました。ニューヨークでは３月３１日からいよいよ公開されます。このドキュメンタリーは、過去５１年間に亘る共産党中国の配下にいるチベット人たちの苦しみ、怒り、傷、絶望感、悲しみ、そして希望と信仰を描いたものです。素晴らしい作品です。吸い込まれて、まるでその場に自分がいるような感じになり、見る人のアテンションをずっと保てるんです。パームスプリングインターナショナルフェスティバルでは、中国がこの映画に対して圧力をかけましたが、結局この作品は、最優秀作品として選ばれました。最初から最後まで涙が止まりませんでした。リアルなチベタンたちのリアルな苦しみを、ひしひしと感じました。

Lunch at Le Bernardin ル・ベルナルダンでランチ

Recently I had an opportunity to be invited to have an amazing lunch at Le Bernardin. Needless to say that it was heavenly delicious and mind blowing. When my parents lived in NYC for many years my Dad had an office in the Radio City Music Hall building and he dined at Le Bernardin very often. I joined him a few times and I must say that this restaurant is really the best of all. They have kept its top quality for many years and it is not easy to do. Since I am helping the Office of Tibet organize a private fund raise luncheon with The Dalai Lama in May at Le Bernardin I have been going to the restaurant to have meetings. One day Eric generously invited me to have a gorgeous lunch there while I was working in his office. What a lucky day it was! Thank god that I skipped my breakfast that morning. The appetizer I chose was this grilled octopus with fermented black bean sauce and pears. Oh my god, it was the best octopus that I ever had... it literally melted in my mouth like butter. I was already full with the octopus, but the black bass arrived... how could I pass this fresh master piece?


Then this first dessert arrived. There was this melting fluffy sweet cream and chocolate inside!

Did I tell you that I have two stomachs? One extra for sweets. This dark chocolate tart with peanuts and ice cream was so gorgeous. I do not have words to describe how good this piece was. I wondered if I could come back just to have this dessert with my vegetarian husband who loves chocolates as I do. The lunch took a full hour. I was planning to get a sandwich from a deli across the street and eat it in 10 minutes. What a sweet surprise, indeed!

ダライラマのアメリカ代表に頼まれて、５月にダライラマ法王とのプライベートランチョンをオーガナイズしている私です。場所はニューヨーク、いやアメリカナンバーワンとも言われるフレンチ／シーフードレストラン「ル・ベルナルダン」。ここのオーナーシェフ、エリック・リペールは私の友人でもあり、ダライラマ法王の大ファン。ランチョンがファンドレイズだと相談すると、全てをただで引き受けてくれるとのこと、、。夢のようなオファーでした。通常このレストランでパーティをすると、それはそれは高額なコストがかかるのです。ダライラマ大ファンのエリックは、「全てまかせて」と。素晴らしい！
５月とはいえ、準備は山ほどあります。何度もレストランに足を運び、打ち合わせなどをします。ある日、朝からエリックのオフィスで会議をしていた私に「ランチでも食べて来てね」とエリックが特別に私を招待してくれました。

両親がNYに長年住んでいた頃は、父のオフィスはロックフェラーセンターのラジオシティミュージックホールのビルにありました。ル・ベルナルダンに近いし、父はしょっちゅうこのレストランで食事をしていた常連でした。私も何度か父にジョインしたことがあります。
こんなに長い間、クオリティを保ちながらトップの座を維持しているル・ベルナルダン。ほんと凄いです。

特別席に坐り、まずはタコのグリル、梨と黒豆ソースのアペタイザーをいただきました。口の中でタコがとろけて、まじで人生で最高のタコグリルだと感動。クリーミーなブリオシュもここのオリジナルで、パンは控えようと思いつつ、つい平らげてしまった。そしてブラックバス。なんともフレッシュな黒鱒でした。そして登場したのが、卵の殻の中に入ったふわふわしたクリーム。チョコレートもまじっていた。それからデザート。オーマイガーです。ダークチョコレートのタルトでしたが、もう死ぬかと思うくらい美味しかった。これらの素晴らしい品々を表現するボキャブラリーを持ち合わせていない私、こめんなさい〜！

向かいのデリでサンドイッチでも買って１０分ですませようと思っていたランチは一時間以上かかりました。なんてスイートなサプライズ！ありがとう、エリック！

These are the lyrics of the famous song from the film, "The Thomas Crown Affair." It came into my dream recently and I cannot stop singing this song ever since. Actually, I find the lyrics pretty fascinating. I downloaded several versions by Noel Harrison (who sang the original version), Sting, Nana Mouskouri and Dusty Springfeld. There is a beautiful French version by my Goddess, Jesse Norman, "Les Moulins de Mon Coeur" which is absolutely breathtaking! I think that this song definitely made Steve McQueen extra sexy!

この間の夜に見た夢で「風のささやき」が出て来て以来、ずっとこの歌をハミングしています。映画「華麗なる賭」の主題歌でオスカーをとったこの有名な曲は多くのシンガーたちによって歌われてきました。私が好きなバージョンは、オリジナル主題歌のノエルハリソン、スティング、ナナムスクリ、ダスティスプリングフェルド。そして私の女神、オペラ歌手ジェシーノーマンのフレンチ版もあり。これは感動するくらい美しい！歌詞も聞けば聞く程、考えさせられます、、。この甘くなんともせつないメロディは、スティーブマックイーンをよりセクシーに見せたと思うな。

March 10th, the 51st Anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising Day

51 years ago today, March 10, the Tibetans stood up and fought against the repression of the Communist Chinese government. So many Tibetans died that day and more after that. The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 and has been trying hard to solve the Tibet issue in a peaceful manner...a dialogue with the Chinese government. However, the Chinese government has refused to even meet this Buddhist monk. "I am just a simple monk," the Dalai Lama says. Why China does not want to meet this simple monk?

今日で５１年目を迎えるチベットのアップライジングデー。これまでに１２０万人以上のチベタンたちが中国政府により虐殺されました。１９５９年にチベットからインドへ亡命したダライラマ法王は、平和的に和解しようと中国政府に長年リクエストしていますが、未だ中国政府はこの「ただのお坊さん」と自分を呼ぶダライラマに会おうとさえしません。


We began the rally in Brooklyn at 8AM and walked on the Brooklyn Bridge, then gathered at the U.N.Plaza. Several hundred came. Fortunately the weather was so nice this year. I have been coming to this rally for over 10 years and it has been always icy cold on March 10th!　今朝はブルックリンで集合後、ブルックリン橋を渡り、国連プラザで集会。数百人が集まりました。

Then we marched through the Times Square as we kept shouting, "Free Tibet!" Many pedestrians stopped and applauded us. The big rally was escorted by the New York police along the way to the Chinese consulate where we were not allowed to be near. We had to continue our rally from one block away on the West Side Highway. Then, we head down to the Union Sq. to gather for the evening rally. I was exhausted, but felt good to be with all my Tibetan fellows.

その後は、タイムズスクエアを通りました。皆で「フリーチベット！」と絶え間なく声を張り上げて歩いていると、立ち止まって拍手をしてくれる人も沢山いました。その後は、中国領事館の前へ。でも以前のように目の前には行けなくなっており、１ブロック先のハイウエイの遠くから皆でデモをしました。日が暮れて来ると、今度はユニオンスクエアに集まって、夜の集会ラリー。夜は仕事を抜出せなかった人も集まって来て、また盛り上がりました。とにかく疲れた一日でした。でも、仲間と共に心がひとつになり嬉しい一日でした！

Thank you Tibet! Gala Dinner at the Pierre Hotel

This is my dear Tibetan friend, Sonam Zoksang who is a renowned photographer (www.visionoftibet.com.) He was the very first Tibetan whom I met in my life and he inspired me to start my organization, "Books for Children." We sat next to each other at the benefit party for the Tibet Fund. The fabulous dinners were prepared by star chef Eric Ripert and his friends!
All the following photos were taken by him. 人生最初のチベタンの友人、ソナムゾクサンと。彼がそもそも私が「ブックスフォーチルドレン」を始めたきっかけとなった親友。有名なフォトグラファーです。

This is Tendor, the executive director of Students for a Free Tibet. He was lobbing for Tibet all day in Washington D.C. that day. SFT代表のテンドルもホワイトハウスでロビーした後、参加。

The man on the right is Mr. Lodi Gyari who is the special envoy of the Dalai Lama. He is the one who has been talking with China for many years to solve the problems between Tibet and China.
右端の男性は、ダライラマ法王のスペシャルエンヴォイであるロディゲリ氏。彼が過去何年にもわたって、中国政府と会話をしてチベット問題を解決しようとしている大使です。

This is the banquet room at the Pierre Hotel. I have been here for other parties and I was amazed how this room could look so different for each occasion! The man who is sitting in front of me is a rinpoche from Switzerland. The dinner was amazing and it was such a fun event. I Love Tibet!
ピエールホテルで他のパーティに行ったことが何度かありますが、このバンケットルーム、パーティによってガラっと変わるのにビックリ。この夜はチベットのルンタ（お経が書かれた旗）などのデコレーションが綺麗でした。この写真ではスイスから来ていたある有名なリンポチェと。英語、チベット語、フランス語チャンポンで会話しました。スターシェフたちによる美味しいお料理と、大好きな仲間たち。素晴らしいパーティでした！
