Book Launch in Tokyo was fun! 10月29日出版記念パーティ

My book launch for Save the Himalaya in Tokyo last night was lots of fun. At Roppongi Nouen, a trendy organic restaurant owned by my old friend has a beautiful garden and terrace, so we enjoyed the garden reception party. I thank you all for coming to support this book project - I will be sending 2,000 copies to 82 Tibetan refugee schools in India soon!

昨夜開催された絵本出版記念パーティ「藤田理麻の不思議な冒険」に参加するために、六本木農園に来てくださった皆さん、どうもありがとうございました！ここが六本木？と思ってしまうようなステキなお庭の空間での、ゆったりしたひと時でした。絵本が無事に完成して本当にうれしいです。この絵本を予定通り、インドに住むチベット難民の子供たちに贈ります。その資金のために、募金をして下さった皆さん、どうもありがとうございました！資金集めはあと一息。頑張ります！皆さんの真心は、きっと子供たちに伝わります。本当にご協力ありがとうございました！

Book Launch in Tokyo 10月29日出版記念パーティ

My solo exhibition, Gods and All Living Things, ended yesterday, and so many people came to see it - thank you all so much! I look forward to seeing you again next year!

This photo is the Japanese version of my latest book, "Save the Himalaya," and it has a special message tag from my friend, YOU, a very popular actress in Japan. The book will be available nation wide on October 28 in Japan, and in mid-November in the US.

There will be a book launch & party at the trendy organic restaurant, Roppongi Nouen on October 29. I hope you will join us if you are in Tokyo area!

きのうで新宿伊勢丹アートギャラリーでの18周年目の個展が無事に終了しました。今年も沢山の方々にいらしていただき、本当に嬉しく思いました。皆さん、どうもありがとうございました！また来年お会いしましょう！

そして、土曜日、10月29日は、今話題のオシャレなオーガニックレストラン六本木農園にて、絵本「不思議な冒険」の出版記念パーティが開催されます。有名な女優さんによる朗読もあります。これはサプライズ！
そして、サプライズのお土産プレゼントもあります。是非ともご参加くださいね。会場では、絵本にサインさせていただきます。

パーティは、カジュアルなブッフェスタイルになります。また、六本木農園には、ステキなテラスとお庭があり、お庭でのプログラムもありますので、何か羽織るものをお持ちになると良いかもしれません。

また、エコのため、絵本やお土産などを入れる紙袋はご用意しておりませんので、バッグなどをご持参いただけますよう、どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

The last day of my exhibition! 個展最終日

Today, the 25th is the last day of my exhibition at Isetan Art Gallery in Tokyo, and I will be at the gallery from 2pm until 4:30pm. If you can make it please say hello and let me know what you think of my new work. I would like to thank all of you who came to my exhibition this year!

25日の今日は、新宿伊勢丹での個展最終日で午後4時半には終了します。私は午後2時頃から最後まで会場にいますので、是非お声をかけてくださいね。絵の感想などを聞かせてくださいませ。今年も沢山の方々に作品を見ていただきました。本当にどうもありがとうございました！

Gallery Talk ギャラリートーク

Hundreds came to my gallery talk yesterday, and I thank you all for coming! I could not help tearing up as I talked about the tragic earthquake back in March in Japan.., but I saw some people tearing up, too. Japan is still in pain, but we are strong people. We will break through!

My exhibition will end on October 25 at 4:30pm - hope to see you there!

きのうのギャラリートークにも沢山の方々がいらしてくださいました。ありがとうございました！震災の話の時は胸がつまって、上手くお話しできませんでしたが、きっと皆さんも同じ想いだと思い、日本を思う同じ気持ちがひとつになった感じがしました。新宿伊勢丹での個展はあと2日。火曜日は最終日なので午後4時半終了です。私は午後2時から4時まで会場にいますので、是非お声をかけて下さいネ。

The opening was fun! 楽しい 個展オープニングでした！

So many friends and collectors came to my exhibition opening, and it was wonderful to see them again! Several people came up to me and said, "Rima, some people were crying as they were looking at your work because they were so moved by your art." This is my ultimate reward - if anything I have created touches people's heart I cannot be happier than that. To me, art should be emotional rather than rational. Of course every one is different - some people would like art to be more conceptional and intellectual, but for me, art has been always something to do with heart. That is why I feel the happiest when the viewers tell me that they are moved by my works. Thank you for coming to my exhibition, everyone! Without you I will be an artist who has no audience who would bring me joy of creation.

沢山のコレクターやお友達が個展のオープニングパーティに来て下さりました。また皆さんとお会いできてうれしかったです！数人の方たちから、「理麻さん、何人かあなたの絵を見て泣いている人がいましたよ」と言われました。それは私にとって究極の喜びです。私が創りだしたものが、人々の心に響くこと、、ということ以上に嬉しいことはありません。

私にとって、アートは理性的なものでもインタレクチュアルなものでもなく、感情的なものです。もちろん、それは、人によってそれぞれ異なることです。でも私にとっては、昔からアートは心のものでした。

皆さん、作品を見て下さりありがとうございます。皆さん無しでは、私は生み出す喜びを与えてくれる観客のいないアーティストですから。

Gods and All Living Things Solo Exhibition 個展開始

Speaking up 声を出すこと

Occupy Wall Street has been growing world wide now. However, there are no rallies here in Japan, and if there are we don't really hear about them. Japan is facing many serious crisis at the moment, but there are no major rallies in public. I hear that Japanese do not like rallies in general. However, everyone complains about the government all the time, but not many people speak up. As I grew up in the US I have always wondered why.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu whom I met once said, "If you are neutral in situation of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." I utterly agree with this famous quote. You cannot stay passive and silent. You must stand up and speak up. That is only a beginning of the change you wish to make. I find the Japanese citizens too passive. Perhaps I am too westernized, but what will we gain by staying silent? Japanese people needs to stand up in a way that has never done before. I would really like to think about it with you.

ウオール街で始まったデモは世界中に広がっています。でも、日本ではデモはあまり見かけません。あったとしても大きなニュースにはならないようです。日本は今、深刻な問題を沢山かかえています。でも、公の場での市民によるデモがあまり無い。少なくとも世界の注目を浴びるようなデモはありません。一般的に日本人はデモが嫌いだと聞いたことがります。政府への不満はピークを超え、文句は絶えませんが、殆どの人が大きく声を上げ行動ととらないようです。アメリカ育ちの私はそれが不思議で仕方がありませんでした。

一度お会いしたことがあるノーベル賞平和賞受賞者のデズモンド・ツツ大司教の「不正な行為が起こった状況の中、あなたが中立な態度をとれば、それは圧制者側に立つことを選んだことになる」という名言があります。私も本当にそう思うのです。受け身のまま黙っていても何も変わらない。声を出して行動をとることは、何かを変えていくための第一歩にすぎません。私には日本人はあまりにも受け身に見えるのです。もしかしたら私がアメリカナイズされているのかも知れませんね。でも、ただ黙っていて一体何が得られるのでしょう？愛する日本が立ち直るには、国民のひとりひとりが、過去にないような形で行動をとって行くことが必要なのかも知れません。皆さんと一緒に考えて良ければ本当に嬉しいです。

Orange-colored olive trees 金木犀

Tokyo is filled with a sweet fragrance of the orange-colored olive trees. The aroma is intense and everywhere. These beautiful flowers bloom in fall in Japan, and it is one of the symbols of the autumn season. When I lived in Ashiya as a child my house was surrounded by those lovely flowers. Every fall I would pick some fallen blossoms, put them in a tin can to take it everywhere with me. Once in a while at school I open the can to smell the sweet aroma. Even in SoCal, the heaven of the beautiful flowers do not have those flowers. I am in Japan, indeed!

東京は今、金木犀の香りで包まれています。この香は強烈でそこら中に漂っています。金木犀は日本の秋の象徴のひとつでもありますね。芦屋に住んでいた子供の頃、住んでいた家は金木犀に囲まれていました。いつも秋になると私は地面に落ちた金木犀の花びらを小さな缶に入れて持ち歩いていたものです。学校でも時々こっそりと蓋を開けては、この甘い香を楽しんでいました。美しい花々の天国、南カリフォルニアにさえ存在しない金木犀。まさに日本です！

Getting ready for my solo exhibition 個展の準備

My solo exhibition is one week away, and I am getting busy. It is my 18th year at the Isetan Art Gallery, and I must say that time flies! When I reflect on those 18 years I cannot find one single moment that I was satisfied with my work. If there was it was only for a day or two. I have talked with my artists friends about it, and they all feel the same way. Many of us may think we are genius at a certain moment of creation, but usually the next day we feel disappointed by looking at the same piece. Creation is our eternal challenge where we may never feel accomplished. Yet, we keep creating. Why? I do not know. For me, art is just a tool. Tool to make yourself useful. So I do not have much attachment to being an artist. If I find another better tool I shall use it. It is more important to make your useful. However, for some reason I have a feeling that I will be an artist for the rest of my life whether I like or not. As long as I can contribute I shall continue.

The exhibition, Gods and All Living Things starts on October 19 to 25 at Isetan Art Gallery.

今年で１８年目になる新宿伊勢丹アートギャラリーでの個展が、一週間後にせまって来ました。あっという間の１８年間でした。時が経つのはなんて速いのでしょう！１８年を振り返ってみて、アーティストとして満足した時は一度もありませんでした。あったとしてもそれは一瞬のこと。アーティスト仲間に聞いてみると、皆同じ答えでした。ある瞬間、自分は天才だ！と思っても、翌日同じ作品見てみるとたいしたことなくてがっかりしたり、、。笑　決して満足することがないのが、クリエイトする立場の人生なのかもしれません。

それではなぜ創りつづけるのでしょう？それはわかりません。私にとっては、アーティストでいるということよりも、どうやったら自分が世の中に役立つ人間になれるか、、の方が大事なことです。アートは道具にすぎません。もっと自分を生かせる道具がみつかれば、そちらを使うと思います。でも、なぜかしら、私は一生、アーティストでいるような気がしています。そのことによって、貢献できることが少しでもある限り、続けようと思っています。（これからもヨロシクネ！）笑

個展「神とすべての生きものたち」　は、１０月１９日から２５日まで、新宿伊勢丹アートギャラリーにて。１０月２２日（土）は午後２時からサイン会、１０月２３日（日）は午後２時よりトークとサイン会があります。

Jelly Boom in Japan 日本のゼリーブーム

Every year when I visit Japan I enjoy the newest trend in food and drinks. You never see the same items for more than a year, and that is how the products are sold here. It is my second day in Tokyo, and I already noticed the jelly trend - jelly dressings, jelly sauces and jelly cola drinks in a vending machine. The supermarkets are filled with jelly sweets. Some are hard, some are semi hard jellies. I saw a product called, La France Julee. La France is a name of a certain pear, and Julee means `hello` in Ladakhi language. How amusing is that? I love Japan! lol

毎年日本に帰国すると、新製品の食べ物やドリンクを楽しむ私です。同じものを一年以上見かけないのが日本のトレンディフードビジネスですね。東京に着いて2日目ですが、すでに今年のゼリーブームに気づきました。ゼリー状のドレッシング、ソース、そして自動販売機の中のゼリーコーラドリンク。スーパーマーケットには沢山の種類のゼリーが勢ぞろい。固いタイプ、とろりとしたタイプ。ひとつ「ラ・フランス　ジュレ」というゼリーをみつけました。ラ・フランスは梨の一種ですが、ジュレというのはラダック語で「こんにちは」という言葉です。まあなんて面白いコンビ！だから日本は大好きだ～！笑

Off to Tokyo! 東京へ発ちます！

Green everywhere 至る所にグリーン

Sure, San Diego is filled with green everywhere. I mean the Green Cross. It seems that every month there is a new green cross place. They are spreading out like fungus, and I am not sure it is a good thing or not. Green Cross means medical marijuana shop. That's right, you can buy marijuana with your doctor's prescription. I must say that it is a heaven here for the pot heads.

もちろんサンディエゴは緑に囲まれています。私が言うのはグリーンクロス（緑十字か？）のこと。毎月のように新しいグリーンクロスがオープンしています。まるでキノコのようにあちこちと、、。良いことなのかそうでないのか、もう私には分かりません。グリーンクロスというのは、薬用マリファナを販売するお店のこと。そうです、ドクターの処方箋があれば誰でもマリファナを買えるということです。ポットヘッズ（マリファナ好き）には天国のような所だな。



This is a new one near my house. It used to be a "special kind massage" parlor, but now it's gone green! (When we moved here I went to this spa without knowing it... lol)

これは我が家の近くにできたお店。以前は、あの〜、いわゆるファンシーな「特別な種類のマッサージ」パーラーでしたが、今はグリーンになってしまった！（引っ越して来た頃、そうとは知らずに腰痛で駆け込んだ私でした、、笑）




This is a new one, too. What a dignified name! これも新しいお店。なんとも権威のある名前だこと！




This shop offers happy hours! They seem to sell medicated barbecue sauce, medicated smoothies and so on... Thank god I am not into marijuana at all... otherwise, I would go mad living around here!

なんとこのお店は、ハッピーアワーズまであり。しかも、薬用バーベキューソースとか薬用スムージーとかもあり。ぞう、全部マリファナ入りらしい。ああ、マリファナに全く興味無い私でよかった、、。じゃなければ、こんな所に住んでいたら嬉しくて気が狂っていましたよ！
