Art that touches your heart 心に響くアート

I watched Werner Herzorg's new film, "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" (2010) about the 32,000-yr-old cave paintings in Chauvet in South France which were discovered in 1994. I was utterly stunned by those energetic, powerful and breathtakingly beautiful paintings, and they deeply touched me. They were full of spirit, liveliness and love. They are so "alive" that they look as if they are moving. It's hard to believe that those masterpieces were created so many years ago! I visited some villages near the cave a few times, but had no idea about those cave painting. I hiked on the vast rocks not knowing I was so near the amazing ancient art!

ハーゾーグの新しい映画「Cave of Forgotten Dreams」（２０１１年）を見ました。１９９４年に発見された、３万年以上も昔に描かれた、南フランスにあるショーヴェーの洞窟の壁画のドキュメンタリーです。このエネルギッシュで、パワフルで息を飲むほど美しい壁画には深く感動しました。生き生きしていてスピリットと愛で溢れています。見ていると動いて見える程、「生きて」いるんです。こんな凄い傑作が、こんなに昔に描かれていたとは！以前、この壁画がある場所の近くの村何度か行ったことがあった私です。岩に登ったりして遊んでいましたが、まさかこんな宝の近くにいたなんて夢にも思いませんでした！



This is Chai's latest art masterpiece. Chai is my pug dog, and his talent is in "art of merde" (art of poop). This time he manages to do it in the dead center of some plants... and if you can see the "merde" closely you will see its amazing shape! Chai's art simply touches my heart just because he is my loving dog ;p

これはチャイの最近の傑作です。チャイは私のパグ犬で、彼の才能は「ウンチアート」。今回は、見事にこの草のど真ん中にしました。しかも、よく見ると、素晴らしく何かの形をしていることが見えますヨ！チャイのアートは私の心に響きます、、だって私の可愛いワン子ですからネ。笑

Autumn in SoCal 南カリフォルニアの秋

Autumn has come to SoCal. However, it's surrounded by those beautiful tropical trees and flowers everywhere.

南カリフォルニアにも秋がやって来ました。とは言え、まわりはトロピカルなお花や木々でいっぱい。




Those cute mushrooms have begun to appear everywhere. I wonder if they are edible. When I was in France I used to go on the mushroom hunting with a big basket in my hand. I would pick so many mushrooms of all sorts of kinds. When I get home I I'd pull out the mushroom encyclopedia to find out which is edible or not. It would take hours, and by the time it's done the mushrooms were dried out that I ended up throwing them out!

最近は、可愛いキノコたちも、そこら中に顔を見せ始めました。これって食べれるのかなあ？フランスにいた頃、よく大きなバスケットを持ってキノコ狩りに行きました。色んな種類のキノコを沢山採って、お家に戻るとキノコ図鑑を見ながら、食べれるものと毒性のものと分けます。それに時間のかかること！終わった頃にはキノコはしなびていて、結局捨ててしまう私でした。トホホ




Well, well, well. Those tomatoes (or squashes?) are not from my garden. (Thank god. I wouldn't know how to cook them.) This photo came to me on facebook, and I just had to post it here. It's nothing to do with autumn or SoCal, but just a lovely image of life and nature! Enjoy! lol


さて、さて、さて！このトマト（瓜かな？）は私のお庭のものではありませ〜ん。（どうやって調理したら良いのか困ります、、、）この写真はフェイスブックで廻ってきたもので、ただここに載せたかったんです。秋とも南カリフォルニアとも何の関係も無し。ただ、美しい自然とライフの象徴のイメージですのでエンジョイ！笑

Succulents Rescue サボテン救出

Ever since I moved to SoCal last year I've been fascinated with a variety of succulent plants here. They are everywhere, and I see different kinds all the time.

去年、南カリフォルニアに引っ越して以来、すっかり虜になったのがサボテンです。至ところに生えているサボテン、種類も豊富です。



A while ago I began noticing that some succulent plants are thrown out on the street here and there. Perhaps they are accidentally torn by dogs or bicycles... I really don't know. When I walk my dog twice a day I have to watch my dog so carefully to make sure that he wouldn't eat anything on the street. That behavior made me notice those poor damaged succulents.

しばらく前に、よく路上にサボテンの欠片が転がっているのに気づきました。原因は分かりませんが、おそらく、犬や自転車によってもぎ取られるのでしょう。毎日、犬の散歩を２回する時、犬が路上のものを食べないようにと、じっと見張っている私。それで、このもぎ取られた可哀想なサボテンたちに気づくようになったんですね。



So I began taking them home and plant them in the soil. I was told that succulents are tough and grow so quickly, and indeed, it is true! Those photos are all succulents that I rescued from
the streets. Aren't they so lovely? I'm so happy that they are growing strong.

それで私は、そのダメージを受けたサボテンたちを家に持って帰り、土に植えてあげるようになりました。サボテンはタフですぐに成長すると聞いていましたが、その通り！これらの写真は皆、私が植え直したサボテンたちです。なんとも可愛いでしょう？元気になってくれて嬉しいな。



However, except this one... This is called "Starfish Cactus," and I see them once a year in my neighbourhood. They are beautiful and eerie, and I am not sure if I want them in my garden. It's good that I haven't seen them "thrown out" on the street so far... I certainly wouldn't know what to do with them then!

でもこれは別。この「ヒトデカクタス」と呼ばれるサボテンは、一年に一度咲くようで、近所で見かけます。綺麗だけどちょっと異様、、。自分のお庭にはどうかなあ、、。今のところ、路上で捨てられているのはみかけないのでホっとしています。もしもみつけてしまったら困っちゃうな〜！

Lights of Hope 希望の光

These stunning blue beams lit towards the sky infinitely on 9.11. This beautiful photo was taken by my dear friend, Tomo who was truly there for me during that horrifying period in New York. I lived on West Broadway and Broome St, and Tomo on Thompson and Prince St. We checked on each other every day making sure that we stayed sane. One night while I was having a panic attack she called me and said, "Are you all right? Do you want me to come over and spend the night there if you are scared?" This caring gesture from a friend made me feel so much better, and I survived that night alone. I will never forget her kindness.

今年の９月１１日、この美しい青い光は天へ向かって果てしなく輝きました。この写真は、私の仲良しのトモさんが撮った一枚。あの恐ろしいNYでの時期に、彼女は私を支えてくれました。当時私は、ソーホーのウエストブロードウエイとブルームストリートに住んでいて、トモさんは、トンプソンとプリンスストリート。近い私たちは、毎日電話をし合って、お互いに気がふれてないかをチェックし合いました。9.11の翌日あたり、私はパニック状態になりそうになっていると、彼女が電話をくれました。「大丈夫？怖かったら泊まりに行こうか？」と優しく言ってくれたのです。友人の温かい言葉を聞いて、少し気が楽になった私は、独りでその夜を過ごすことができたのでした。彼女の親切は一生忘れません。




As I watched the towers collapse with my own eyes in that morning of 9.11 those horrible
images are still so vivid today, and I have had many nightmares for some years. However,
on the 10th anniversary of 9.11 I really wanted to be in New York. It's my home, and I love
New York more than any other places in the world. This photo was taken by my friend, Emily
whom I've known since 13 years old. The beams seem expanding towards the sky as if it's healing the world.

タワーが崩れる瞬間をずっと肉眼で見ていた私は、あのぞっとする映像が未だに鮮やかに頭に焼き付いていて、数年にわたって沢山の悪夢を見ました。でも、９／１１の１０周年には、ニューヨークにいたかった私です。私のホームであるニューヨーク。世界中のどこよりも好きな街。この一枚は、１３歳からの友人エミリーが撮った一枚です。私には、光が空にむかって広がって、まるでこの世を癒しているように見えました。



Then, a few days later after 9.11 the Harvest Moon came to us. Needless to say it was unbelievably beautiful, and I watched it for a long time from my window. I was really down that day, and passing my bed time, I still could not sleep. So I worked on the final proof-reading on my upcoming book, "Save the Himalaya." Then, surprisingly, I found a huge fatal mistake that I had not noticed for 6 months! Coincidence? Maybe..., but I thanked the Moon very much. I certainly had to! The Moon gave me power, courage and energy... I even felt the sense of healing. I prayed for the world peace and for our Earth and the Universe, and headed to sleep.

そして、３日後に、中秋の名月（ハーベストムーン）が姿を見せてくれました。信じられないほど美しかったことは言うまでもありませんネ。私は窓から何時間も、この満月を見つめていました。その日は落ち込んでいて、ベッドタイムが来ても眠れません。なので、もうすぐ出版される絵本「不思議な冒険」のファイナル校正チェックをすることにしたのです。月の光の下で校正を読んでいると、信じられないことが、、。半年間、誰もきづかなかった致命的なミスを発見したのです！偶然かもしれません。でも私はお月さまに感謝しました。満月は、私にパワー、勇気、そしてエネルギーを与えてくれました、、そして、癒された気持ちさえしたんです。そんな夜、私は世界の平和と、地球と宇宙のためにお祈りをして、眠りにつきました。

Magnificient Chino Farm 素晴らしい知野農場

"You must visit Chino Farm," my gastronomic father told me one day. I've been living in San Diego for one year now, and no one told me about Chino Farm. My dad who lives in Tokyo sent me a commanding email to visit this world-famous farm in Rancho Santa Fe.

「チノ農場に行ってみること」と、ある日食いしん坊の父が言って来ました。サンディエゴに住んで一年になりますが、誰もチノ農場のことを教えてくれませんでした。なのに東京に住む父が、ランチョサンタフェにある、この世界的有名な農場を訪れるようにと、命令に近いようなメールを送ってきたのです。



Chino Farm which has regular customers including many good restaurants and the celebrity chefs (such as Alice Waters of La Panisse and Wolfgang Puck of Spago) was started by Mr. Chino many years ago, and has been serving the most amazingly fresh organic produce. My dad read about Chino Farm in Jefferey Steingarten's book. Jefferey is a food critique for Vogue magazine. I met Jefferey at a dinner party in the Meat Market area in NYC (he's married to my friend), and I never forget that he told me about his favorite chocolate - Sharffen Berger - that was not yet known at that time yet. As a chocoholic I went to buy it the next day, and could not believe how good it was. Ever since I trust Jefferey's taste. So, when my dad told me about Jefferey mentioning Chino Farm it became an immediate mission to visit there.

チノ農場は、多くのトップレストランの他に、沢山のセレブシェフ（アリスウオーターズやウオルフガングパックなど）が常連としても知られています。昔、日本人のチノ氏が、この素晴らしいオーガニック農場を始め、長年新鮮で美味しいプロデュースを提供してるのです。私の父は、ヴォーグ誌のフード批評家であるジェフェリースタインガーテンの本を読んで、チノ農場を知ったのでした。ジェフェリーにはNYのミートマーケットエリアでのディナーパーティで会ったことがあって（彼は私の友人の旦那さん）その時、彼は一番好きなチョコレート「シャーフェンバーガー」を教えてくれたのでした。当時はまだ知られてなかったこのチョコを、チョコ狂の私は早速翌日探して食べてみて、ビックリしたのでした。それ以来、私はジェフェリーの言うことに耳を傾けるようになったのです。なので、父がジェフェリーがチノ農場が素晴らしいと書いていたと言うので、すぐに行かなくてはと思ったのでした。




My husband and I woke up early to get there by 10am to be the first customer. I was so excited. When we got to the farm we saw all the cars lined up already - Benz, BMW, Benz, BMW... it looked like a fancy car dealer! We stood in line, and I realized that there were no price tags, and the customers just told the cashiers what they wanted, and did not pick up any produce by themselves. I usually pick carefully what I buy, but here, at Chino Farm, whatever they give you is all good... so you don't have to worry about it.

私と旦那さんは早起きして、１０時に開店（小さなスタンドですが）に合わせてチノ農場へ向かいました。私はワクワク。農場に着くと、もうそこには車がずらり並んでいました。ベンツ、BMW、ベンツ、BMW、、とまるで高級カーディーラーの様。私は列に並び、様子を見ていると、、。プライスタグが無いことにまず気付きました。何がいくらか分かりません。また、お客さんは、自分で好きなものをピックしません。お店の人にほしいものを言うと、お店の人が袋に入れるのです。普段は、よく見ながらピックする私ですが、この農場では、どれもが新鮮で素晴らしいので心配しませんでした。



I was overwhelmed by the variety of the produce, and could not decide what to buy. Many were behind me waiting to be served, so I felt rushed to make a decision. So I bought some tomatoes, Japanese crispy cucumbers, bell peppers, raspberries and strawberries. I had heard that their strawberries are the world best. So I bought enough for my neighbors, too. I asked them about the apricot jam (which my dad had requested me to buy), but they did not have it. Apparently, Wolfgang Puck had told Chino about his mother's recipe, and Chino's daughter had made it... or something. My dad makes the apricot jam every year based on Wolfgang's mom's recipe. (The last time I saw Wolfgang I forgot to tell him about my dad's apricot jam!)

私の番が来たのは良いものの、あまりにも種類が豊富で何を買って良いか分からなくなった私は、おろおろしていました。後には多くが待っているし、焦った結果、目の前にあった美しいトマトと、日本のキュウリ、ベルペッパー、イチゴとラズベリー、とうもろこしを買いました。お店の人に、父に頼まれたアプリコットジャムがあるかどうか聞いたのですが、ジャム類は何も無しでした。実は、ここの常連のウオルフガングパックが、彼の母親のレシピをチノさんの娘さんに教えたそうなのです。このレシピ、私の父が毎年愛用してアプリコットジャムを作っています。この間、ウオルフガングに会った時、そのことを伝えるのを忘れてしまった！）


My sweet husband had bought an ice box for me to bring to Chino Farm, so that the fresh produce we buy would not go bad. So when we got home everything was so fresh and perfect. I made a tomato salad with basil (from my garden), onion and olive oil.

私の優しい旦那さんは、農場へ出発する前に、アイスボックスを買って来てくれました。チノ農場から帰宅するまでに、新鮮な野菜がしなびてしまったら困ると、、。なので、帰宅した時も、野菜や果物はすべてフレッシュでした。私は自分のお庭で育てたバジルとタマネギを入れてトマトサラダを作りました。



Then, I grilled the most tasty corn in the world! Oh my god, they were so good! I totally fell in love with Chino Farm. I'd love to go there every week to try all their amazing produce. You feel so good eating good ingredients. Vegetables and fruits that actually tastes like vegetables and fruits... it is not bad at all!

とうもろこしは外でグリル。うわ〜この世のものとは思えない美味しさでしたよ！チノ農場をすっかり気に入ってしまった私。もう毎週通いたいくらいです。新鮮な素材を使った食事は本当に美味しい。野菜も果物も、本来の野菜と果物の味がするって嬉しいことですよネ。
