Piece of New York ニューヨークのかけら

Anyone who has been living in New York City for a long time must remember this paper coffee cup. We don't see it anymore these days and I truly miss this cup! To me this is so New York.
The man who designed this Greek classic, Leslie Buck, has died at the age 87. It made me very sad to hear this news... perhaps because it reminded me how things change in the world. Since we rarely see those Greek cups anymore I have bought a ceramic version mug and a leather pouch as well! (photo below.) The pouch is $35 at the MOMA shop and a portion profit goes to the homeless in New York. I buy this pouch whenever I can to support that.


このテイクアウト用のペーパーコーヒーカップは、かつてNYのシンボルであったくらい有名ですが、ここ１０年前くらいから、なぜだかめったに見なくなりました。この「ギリシャ風」デザインが大好きな私、この模様がついたマグカップを買って愛用しています。昨日、この伝説となったデザインを手かげた人、レズリーバックがこの世を去ったそうです。８７歳。なんだか時の流れを感じて淋しくなりました。下の写真は、近代美術館のショップで販売されている革製のお財布。ひとつ３５ドルするのですが、収益の一部がNYのホームレスの援助資金として寄付されるシステムで、私は機会があればこのお財布をプレゼントに買うようにしています。またどこかのデリで、このカップでコーヒーを飲みたいものです。

Good Old Pepsi ペプシコーラ

This icon, the old Pepsi sign is probably more known among the Manhattanites than the Queens' residents. I hear that this sign is from the 1930's when the steam boats used to go up and down on the East River transporting sugar canes from South America. I like Pepsi more than Coke, and I just love this view from the park in front of my apartment. How refreshing to look at it!

この巨大なペプシコーラのサインは、クイーンズ地区の人たちよりも、川を超えたクイーンズが見えるマンハッタンの住人の間で親しみ愛されています。イーストリバー沿いにそびえ立つこのサインは、１９３６年頃からあると聞いています。当時、このイーストリバーでは、蒸気船が南アメリカから砂糖などを運んでいたそうです。私はコークよりペプシが好き。この自宅のアパートの前の公園から見えるペプシサインが大好きです。眺めるだけでリフレッシュ！

Storm King Art Center

We rented a metallic MINI Cooper and drove up to the Storm King Art Center in the Hudson Valley. We had bought a GPS, but still got lost. It took us more than 3 hours to get there (how pathetic!) Chai was so nervous in the car and kept wining... everyone was in a bad mood. However, it was worth it. It is an amazing place! There were Calder, Noguchi, Maya Lin... so many great sculptors' pieces were presented in a massive-500-acres land!

メタリックブルーのミニクーパーをレンタルして、アップステートはハドソンヴァリーにあるストームキングアートセンターに行って来ました。GPSをつけてもしっかり迷った私たち、、。１時間で着くはずが３時間以上かかって、チャイも私も旦那さんも皆、超不機嫌。でも行った甲斐がありました。１９６０年代にできたこのセンター、５００エーカーという贅沢な敷地内に、すごい彫刻家たちの作品が、ポ〜ンポ〜ンと置いてあります。カルダー、ノグチ、マヤリン、、、どれも素晴らしい！この２つ目の写真はイサムノグチの「桃太郎」という作品。

It looks like a death mask, doesn't it? Surprisingly, this piece was done by Nam June Paik and it is called, "Waiting for UFO." Since those faces were on the ground it is easy to be missed. What an incredible place... I highly recommend you to visit! このデスマスクのような作品は、驚くことにナムジュンパイクの作品で「ＵFOを待って」という作品。地に埋めつけられているので、遠くからは気づかない作品です。迷わなければニューヨーク市内から約１時間半で行けるこのアートセンター、おすすめです！

The Dalai Lama Wants to Visit His Homeland

The Dalai Lama has been expressing his wish to visit Qinghai Province where a huge earthquake had hit. About one thousand people have died as of today and the Dalai Lama wants to visit the area to give his support. Tibet supporters around the world are supporting this idea and sending letters to Hu Jintao in China. I am praying that China will let HHDL visit his own birthplace...

チベットの大震災で死亡者が千人を超えたというニュースが入りました。ダライラマ法王は大被害を受けている青海省を訪問したいと熱望しておられます。このエリアは、故パンチョンラマとダライラマ法王がお生まれになった場所でもあり、チベットの中でも特に貧しい地域です。ダライラマ法王は、死者への祈りを捧げると共に、生き延びた人々を元気づけるために、是非、この地に行きたいと言っておられる。中国政府よ、世界中が見ている今、イメージアップのためにも、ダライラマを中国にお呼びしたらどうですか？！

The Metropolitan Opera 椿姫

La Traviata. It is one of my favorite operas and I cannot remember how many times I saw it in my life. My husband who used to hate opera now loves it (my good influence!) and we went to see it at the Met. We had a pre-theater dinner at Pasha, a wonderful Turkish restaurant as usual.

メトロポリタンオペラで「椿姫」を見て来ました。オペラ大好きな両親の元で育った私。子供の頃から、この「メット」に来ています。椿姫も、もう何度見たことでしょう！オペラが苦手な旦那さんも、私の影響ですっかりオペラファンになってしまいました。

Among many things I love about the Met these signature chandeliers are my favorite. They look like delicate snow flakes and right before the opera starts they slowly go up to the ceiling! I have seen La Traviata many times, but I must say that this production by Franco Zeffirelli was amazing. The costume was breathtaking, too! Violetta's room was provided by Etro, her fur coat was by FENDI. It was just gorgeous. この素晴らしいオペラハウスの中でも私が最も好きなのは、雪の結晶のようにデリケートなシャンデリアです。メットの有名なシャンデリア。開幕の直前に静かに天上に向かって上がって行くんですよ！もう、綺麗、綺麗！フランコゼフィレリによるステージデザインは、もう最高でした！そして、コステュームも息を飲むほど美しかった。主人公ヴィオレッタの部屋はエトロが手掛け、彼女の豪華な毛皮のコートはフェンディが提供。なんともゴージャスなオペラでした！

The Sacher Torte ザッハートルテ！

My dear best friend Karin arrived in New York from Vienna with this treasure! This is my favorite chocolate cake in the world...! Chocolate meets apricot jam. It is my dream-come-true. When I was in Vienna a few years ago I went to the Hotel Sacher again and again just to have this heavenly torte. The cake came accompanied with fresh cream. The Sacher's original tea was another addiction - the lovely tea set came with delicious water from the Alps. Everything was perfect. Karin told me that this Sacher Torte is nothing special for the Austrians. I think that when you grow up with it you take it for granted. Thank you Karin, for bringing me this marvelous sweets!!!

ウイーンに住んでいる親友カリンがNYに遊びに来ました。普段はお土産をお願いしない私ですが、今回はつい、「ホテルザッハーのトルテ買って来て〜」と、おねだり。本場のが食べたくて仕方無かったのです。遠慮して「一番小さいのをネ」と頼んだのに、カリンは大きなのを持って来てくれました。綺麗なパッケージ、、、。開けるのにしばらく時間がかかったなあ。木の箱のふたを開けると、おお〜！うっとりするようなタルトです。さっそくカットして食べようと思ったら、フレッシュクリームが無いことに気づいた私。クリーム無しのザッハートルテなんて考えられません。。。でも、買いに行くまで待ち切れず、食べてしまいました。ああ〜幸せ。カリン、本当にダンケシェーン！

My favorite shop お気に入りのお店

We saw this deli in San Diego. I have no idea what they sell, but I love it already! サンディエゴで見つけたデリ。どんなものを売っているのか分かりませんが、ファンになりました！

San Diego Zoo? サンディエゴ動物園？

Yes, San Diego is famous for its gigantic zoo! We never made it to the zoo this time, but there were animals everywhere... in front of people's houses!

サンディエゴは巨大な動物園でも知られていますが、今回は行く時間がありませんでした。でも街中に動物がいることを発見。このゴリラ、キリン、ゾウさん、、、どれも、誰かのおうちの入り口です！


My friends Graham and Dawn's house garden has so many lovely trees and flowers. One morning Graham took one of those lemon/oranges and made a special lemonade for me!

サンディエゴでは美大時代の友人夫婦の家に滞在。お庭には色鮮やかなお花が咲き乱れていました。レモンとオレンジのハーフの木もいっぱいあって、ある朝、友人はひとつもぎ取って、それはそれは美味しいレモネードを作ってくれました。太陽の光が強いサンディエゴ。爽やかで美味しかったです！
