Summer reading 夏の読書

When I moved to New York from Japan at the age 13 my English was not very good, and I had such a hard time understanding my classes at a private prep school that I attended. On top of that I had to take a French class, too, and it was disastrous! My ears were always hurting because I tried so hard to listen to what people were saying. However, some of my high school readings are memorable:

Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, Henry James' The Turn of the Screw,  J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye...


１３歳でニューヨークに移住した時は、英語もまだ片言で
最初は耳が痛くなる程苦労しました。入った進学学校での
授業は、もちろん全部英語。その上フランス語のクラスも
あったので、も～うたいへん！でも、辛い想いをしながら
読んだいくつかの傑作は未だに忘れられません。

エドガー・アラン・ポーの「アッシャー家の崩壊」、ヘンリー・
ジェイムスの「ねじの回転」、そしてJ・Dサリンジャーの
「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」、、、。辞書を片手に１ページ
読むのに何時間もかかったけれど、吸い込まれた作品です。

The street Poe once lived on the upper west side (84th St.)  has been named after him.


"You must rest your eyes as much as you can as an artist, Rima!" My eye doctor commanded me several years ago. Ever since, I've been enjoying the audio books that are read by actors and professional readers. I shall "listen" to those high school readings
again after many years. I am sure that some new inspirations and images will fall down on me!



ポーが一時住んでいた、ニューヨークのアッパー
ウエストサイドは８４丁目。この通りは、彼の名前が
つけられています。

「画家なのだから、目はなるべく休めるように」という
眼科医からの厳しい指示をいただいてからのこの数年、
読書はオーディオブックにしています。そう、いろんな
有名俳優たちによる朗読を、目を閉じて聞くんです。
久々に、子供の頃に読んだ懐かしい作品を、聴いて
みようかな。当時とはまた違ったイメージが湧いて
くるかもしれませんネ。
