Kauai, Hawaii 1 ~ Fruits Paradise~ カウアイ島１〜果物天国〜

I've often visited Hawaii since I was a child, but had never been to Kauai before. I love to eat, and trying all kinds of tropical fruits was so exciting. When we were driving north towards Princeville from Poipu where we were staying I found a local fruit stand. I bought some local papayas and a soursop (the green fruits in the photo above).

 子供の頃からよく訪れたハワイ。今回のカウアイ島は初めて
です。食べるために生きているような私にとって、ハワイの
フルーツは大きな楽しみのひとつ。泊まっていたポイプビーチ
から北のプリンスヴィルに向かう途中に果物屋台をみつけ、
早速、パパイヤとサワースップ（写真の下の緑色の果物）を
買いました。

It was my first time ever to try this grotesque-looking fruit! Surprisingly, it was very tasty - a little bit sour and lightly sweet. I found out later that the seeds are poisonous! Thank God that I did not eat the seeds... I could have been dead in Hawaii.
 
癌予防で知られるサワースップをいただくのは
生まれて初めてでした！見た目はなんともグロテスク。
でも、お味は最高！ちょっぴり酸っぱくて、さっぱりとほんのり甘い。
後から知ったのですが、黒い種は毒を含んでいる
そうです。うっかり食べなくてよかった～。ハワイで
死んでいたかも。笑

The fruit stand man kindly taught me how to cut the papayas correctly. "Don't ever cut it too deeply. You just cut it all around very lightly, then twist to open. Yes, just like cutting the avocados," he said.

After snorkeling at the Tunnel Beach I enjoyed my papaya. I followed the fruit man's instruction, and in that way the sweet juice was kept inside!  It was perfectly ripe and sweet (oh, I forgot the lemon!) I wanted to try some mangoes, but could not find them anywhere. I asked the fruit man what had happened, and he said, "The rain killed all our mango trees. We don't have many mango trees left any more in Kauai..."

Since there are so many kinds of mangoes in Hawaii I was so looking forward to try some. Too bad...
Global warming is effecting everywhere. This is just a beginning. There will be much more damages in the future...


ローカルの屋台のオジさんが、「パパイアを切る
時は、半分に深く一気に切っちゃダメよ。浅く切れ目を
ナイフで入れて、アボカドを切る時のように、ツイスト
しながら割ってね」と、親切に教えてくれました。

トンネルビーチでスノーケルをした後に、食べてみました。
熟れていて甘くて最高でした。（あ～レモンを忘れたけど）
大好きなマンゴーも食べたかったけれど、どこに行っても
マンゴーをみかけない。オジさんに聞いたら、「ああ（溜め息）。
マンゴーは雨が多過ぎで殆どがダメになってしまったのよ。」
とのこと。
何十種類とあるハワイのマンゴーを楽しみにしてたので
残念。これから温暖化の影響で、もっともっと色んなことに
影響が出て来るのでしょうね、、。
