The Dalai Lama and dogs ダライラマと犬たち

I love dogs, and I love the fact that the Dalai Lama, my most respected one, loves dogs, too. One can tell from this photo above that he is very natural with dogs - the way he holds the dog is so gentle and comfortable. The dog seems to be very fond of him, too. I believe that this is not his dog. However, those Tibetan Apsos (photo below) were his dogs. How cute they were!




犬が大好きな私です。最も尊敬する人物、ダライラマ法王も犬が大好きという事実も大好き。この上の写真から、ダライラマ法王は犬ととても自然に対応できることが分かりますね。犬の抱き方は優しいしリラックスしています。上の写真の犬は彼の犬ではないはずですが、下の写真２匹のチベタンアプソはそうです。なんてキュート！



I heard that His Holiness was very sad after those dogs passed away. So ever since after his pets' death, he never named other dogs that he had adopted.... to avoid attachment.

最愛の犬たちが亡くなった後、ダライラマ法王はとても悲しかったそうです。それ以来、犬をアダプトしても決して名前をつけることをしませんでした。ペットに名前をつけると情がより湧くからです。



This is a portrait of his late dog that I had painted, an old German shepherd that he had adopted in order to save him from being killed. I offered this piece to the Dalai Lama as a gift.

この犬の肖像画は、彼の亡くなった犬、ジャーマンシェパードの絵です。殺されそうになっているこの老犬を、ダライラマ法王はアダプトしたのでした。この絵はダライラマ法王へプレゼントしました。


This "meditating" dog is my pug, Chai Tandoori. Pugs come from Tibet and Japan originally, and they were monastery dogs in the 11th Century in Tibet. I have a special thing for pugs. Perhaps I was a pug in Tibet in my past lives! lol I know that Chai wants to have a brother... maybe in a few years I will get him a nice Tibetan apso named "Maccha" (green tea). Chai, would you like that?

この「瞑想する」ワン子は、私のパグのチャイ・タンドリです。パグはもともとチベットと日本の犬です。１１世紀のチベットでは、パグは主にお寺で飼われていました。私はパグに特別の思い入れがあるようです。きっと前世でパグだったのでしょう。笑　チャイはどうやら弟がほしいようです。そうね、あと２、３年したら、可愛いチベタンアプソでも飼ってあげようかな。名前は「まっちゃ（抹茶）」にしようか。どう思う、チャイ？

My days with Peter Falk 刑事コロンボとの日々

Peter Falk, the best known as Columbo, the detective died today. He was 83 suffering with Alzheimer. I have special memory with him in New York that I'd like to share.

When I was a high school student I used to take drawing classes at the Art Students League on 57 th Street during the summer. One day this tiny, ragged hunchback man came into the class. He sat next to me, and began drawing. Everyone was looking at him, but no one said anything (typical New Yorkers!) "Hey, do you want some?" During the break he offered me some fresh strawberries. Then I knew who he was. It was "Columbo"!

How thrilled I was! Columbo was a huge star in Japan, and my family watched this popular television show every Friday night. I could not believe that he was sitting next to me! Ever since that day he always sat next to me in the class, and every day he offered me some fresh fruits.

"You are so popular in Japan!" One day I told him so excitingly. Can you imagine - I was a teenager :) He smiled and said to me, "Thank God, Rima. You are the only one who would talk to me in this class." "I think people are respecting your privacy, Peter," I told him. He smiled again in a way that he did not buy what I said.

I had assumed that all the celebrities would not want to be bothered. Especially in New York people leave celebrities alone, usually. I have seen so many movie stars in restaurants and on the streets of NYC, but have never seen them being surrounded by fans or anyone. So I was surprised to hear what Peter had said to me. Perhaps for him, the drawing classes were the place where he could be "him" and not the famous actor.

Peter Falk always applauded towards the nude model at the end of the class. He started this wonderful tradition. It was so nice. He knew that the many nude models were trying to be actors. He probably knew how hard that was. He was a very sincere, genuine and kind man. A great artist, too. I remember that his drawings were so raw, strong and powerful. Have you ever seen "Wings of Desire" by Wim Wenders? Peter has a role in that movie, and he was actually drawing in the film. That was exactly how he used draw.

I hope that he is with an angel with big wings and resting in peace.

今日、刑事コロンボで有名だった俳優、ピーターフォークが、８３歳で亡くなりました。アルツハイマーで苦しんでいたそうです。私はこのコロンボ警部と特別な思い出があるので、シェアしたいと思います。

まだ高校生だった頃、夏になると私は５７丁目にある「アートスチューデントリーグ」というアートスクールでデッサンの勉強をしていました。ある日、小さくてバサバサしてて猫背の男性が入って来て、私の隣に座って絵を描き出したのです。クラスの皆は彼をじい〜っと見つめていました。休み時間になって、この男性は、「イチゴ食べない？」と、私にイチゴを差し出してくれたのでした。この時、彼がピーターフォークだったと知ったのです。

私が興奮したのは言うまでもありません。彼は日本で大スターでしたから！私の家族も毎週、「刑事コロンボ」を楽しみにして見ていました。

「あなたは日本でも凄い人気なのよ！」と私は言いました。なんといってもまだ高校生でしたから、もう嬉しくて、嬉しくて。ピーターは、「サンクガッド！（ありがたい！）このクラスで僕に話しかけてくれるのは君だけだよ、リマ！」と言ったのです。「皆、あなたのプライバシーを尊重しているだけよ。」と私が言うと、彼は笑って、そんなことないよ、、という感じで微笑んだのでした。

通常、セレブの人たちは、そっとしておいてほしいと思ったのです。NYCに長年住んで、数えきれない程のスターたちを、レストランや道で見かけましたが、一度も彼らがファンに囲まれたりしているのを見たことがありません。ニューヨーカーたちは、皆けっこう知らんふり。ピーターとって、この絵のクラスは、俳優でなく「自分」としていられる場所だったのかも知れませんね。

ピーターは、こんなこともしました。毎日クラスの最後に、ヌードモデルさんたちに拍手をしたんです。皆、このステキな行為が習慣になりました。ヌードモデルの殆どが、俳優の卵や、スターになりたくて頑張っている人たちだったのです。ピーターは、その世界がいかに厳しいか知っていたので、こんな優しいことをしたんですね。彼は本当に親切で優しい人でした。

ウイム・ヴェンダースの「Wings of Desire」という映画で、ピーターが絵を描くシーンがあります。彼が本当に描いているんです。彼の絵は、あんな感じでした。生々しく、力強い。

彼が今、大きな羽の天使のもとにいることを祈ります。

Male Nudes 男性の裸体

You are probably laughing as you are looking at this lovely picture. Do you have any ideas what it is? This is a Mongolian carpet from the 18th century that was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It's quite large, and the colors were so rich.



おそらくこの絵を見ながら笑っておられることでしょう、、。これ、何か分かりますか？そうです、１８世紀モンゴルの絨毯。ニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館で展示されていました。
かなりサイズも大きく、色合いも美しかったです。



This was was my favorite among several carpets there. I love his face and expression. He reminds me of the Mongolian sumo wrestlers... they have the same hairdos!

数点展示されていた絨毯の中でも、これが私の一番のお気に入りです。この男性の顔と表情が良い。モンゴル人のお相撲さんたちを思わせる髪型ですネ！



A gorgeous statue of Hercules at the Met. also was stunning. Male nudes have been celebrated throughout our history. They represent power, strength and life force!

この素晴らしいハーキュリーズの像もメトロポリタン美術館にあります。男性の裸体は、歴史上ずっと賛美されて来ました。男性のパワー、強さ、生命の力を象徴しているのですね！

Little Mexico in LA ロスアンジェルスのリトルメキシコ

When I got off the Amtrak train at the Union Station in LA I heard some festive music near by. I looked around, and found that there was a Mexican festival outside. There were men and women all dressed up dancing. There were food, shops, sweet drinks, live music and kid running around.
I walked around the small vendor shops, and ran into this cute sweet shop. They were selling so many sweets and snacks from Mexico. They were so colorful, and it was so much fun to just look at the packaging!



アムトラックの列車でロスアンジェルスのユニオン駅で降りた私は、どこからともなく楽しげな音楽が聞こえて来るのに気付きました。辺りを見回してみると、近くでメキシコのお祭りを発見。男性も女性も着飾って踊っています。食べ物、甘い飲み物、お店にライブミュージック。子供たちが走り回っていました。ずらり並ぶ屋台のお店を歩いてみると、この駄菓子屋さんを発見。色とりどりなパッケージは見てるだけで楽しいです！



Then, look what I found! They were some kind of sweet bread, but they looked exactly like the "Melon Bread" in Japan...

そして、これ見て下さい！メキシコの甘いパンなのだそうですが、どう見てもメロンパン！



Many years ago in New York I had a good friend who was from Mexico City. One day he brought me some sweets from Mexico, and they were the ones with a rose picture (photo above). I cannot remember the taste, but I remember how sweet they were. They were so sweet that I could not eat them! As I was recalling the sweetness all I could smell was the fresh tortillas... because
this sweet vendor was right next to the tacos vendor. The smell was overwhelmingly intense!

何年も前にNYで、メキシコシティ出身の友人がいました。ある日、かれはメキシコから甘いお菓子を持って来てくれました。薔薇の絵がついたもので（上の写真）、味は全く覚えてないのですが、それはそれは甘かったこと！甘過ぎて食べれないほどでした。そんなことを思い出しながら臭って来たのは、となりの屋台のできたてのトルティーヤ。その強烈な臭いたるや！

Medicated BBQ Sauce 薬用バーベキューソース

What the heck is the "medicated BBQ Sauce"?!? This store sign caught my eyes near my house the other day. I found out later that this sauce has marijuana in it... for medical conditions. San Diego has numbers of shops that sell marijuana for medical purposes, but I had never seen a "BBQ Sauce"! Does that mean that they can make "medicated chocolate sauce" and all that? How funny is this! Thank God, I have no interests in marijuana and any other drugs whatsoever... can you imagine how excited I would be if I were a pot head?

「薬用バーベキューソース」とは一体何ぞや？！？この店看板が目についたのは昨日のこと。後で分かったのですが、これはマリファナ入りのソースだとか、、、薬用としての、ネ。サンディエゴには沢山の「薬用マリファナショップ」がありますが、BBQソースはさすがに見るのは初めて！ということは、「薬用チョコレートソース」とかも作れるってことですよね〜？なんて面白い！マリファナとかドラッグに一切興味無しの私、よかったなあ、、。だって、もしもポットヘッド（いつもマリファナばかり吸っている人）だったら、こんな街に住んでいたら興奮して狂ってしまいそう！

Beatutiful things in New York NYの綺麗なもの

One thing I enjoy the most in New York is to walk around and look at beautiful things. The beautiful window displays, beautiful streets, beautiful shops... and beautiful people, too! The Puck building on Lafayette Street is one of my favorite buildings. I used to live a few blocks away from it, and I used to pass it every day.

ニューヨークで楽しいことの一つは、街を歩き回って綺麗なものを見ることです。綺麗なウインドウディスプレイ、綺麗な道、綺麗なお店、、そして綺麗な人々も！ラファイエットストリートにあるパックビルディングは、私のフェバレートのひとつ。ここから２ブロック先に住んでいたので、このビルの前を毎日通ったものです。



I could spend hours looking at the beautiful shop windows...

綺麗なお店のウインドウ。何時間でもみとれてしまいそう、、、



Colors are everywhere! This is my favorite perfumery, Bond 9 on Bond Street. Pink and Green... my favorite combination of colors!

至る所にカラーが！ボンドストリートにあるこの香水店「ボンド９」は、私のお気に入り。ピンクとグリーン。一番好きなカラーコンボ！




The window of Balthazar Bakery... yum... my mouth gets watery by just looking at it... My "visual hunger" as an artist is always there. One's definition of beauty differs, but to me New York offers so many beautiful things. My eyes are very satisfied right now, indeed... :)

そしてこれは、バルタザールベイカリーのウインドウ。美味しそう、、。見てるだけで口がじわ〜っとしてきます。私の「目の空腹」は画家としていつも健在。何を「美」と呼ぶかは人それぞれですが、私にとってニューヨークは綺麗なものを沢山提供してくれる街。今、私の目はとっても満足です、、、！

Avec Eric Ripert エリック・リペールと

A special friend of mine, Eric Ripert, a celebrity chef from Le Bernardin in New York and I met again at the Tibet House Museum to help organize an auction event for the Tibetan Community Center Project, hosted by the Office of Tibet. He and I worked hard together last year to organize a charity luncheon with the Dalai Lama to raise funds for the Tibetan Community Center. My family has been his restaurant's fan for many years, and needless to say that not only I am a big fan of his cuisine, but his great personality.

私の友人でもあり、セレブシェフ、ル・ベルナルダンのエリック・リペールと、NYのチベットハウス美術館で開催されたチベットのためのオークションイベントで再会しました。昨年、エリックと私は、NYにチベタンコミュニティセンターを設立するための、ダライラマ法王をお迎えしたチャリティランチョンをオーガナイズするボランティアを一緒にして仲良くなりました。私の家族はル・ベルナルダンの長年のファンで、私自身も彼の料理はもちろん、エリックの素晴らしいパーソナリティのファンでもあります。



The weather that day could not be worse. It was 100F, humid and raining. The AC was broken at the Tibet House Museum, but Eric and his chef team of 5 prepared some fabulous hors d'oeuderves! He served some salmon, tuna, along with those fresh tomatoes with basil that were so refreshing!

天候はこれ異常悪くなりえない、、というくらい最悪でした。１００F度を超える暑さにひどい湿度。おまけに嵐で大雨。チベットハウス美術館のエアコンは壊れているし、、。でも、エリックと、彼の５人のシェフチームは、素晴らしいオードブルを用意してくれました。サーモン、マグロ、野菜、、の他に、この新鮮なトマトとバジルが美味しかったこと！





This watermelon soup was incredible! It had such a complex flavor that lingered in your mouth...

そして、この西瓜のスープは凄かった！なんとも奥深い味が、口の中でいつまでも漂っていました、、。



And the delicious desserts! When Eric was preparing the food in the backroom I noticed the cute little canelles, and could not help screaming, "Oh my god! Are those canelles?!" He laughed, and offering them to me, "Take some, Rima!" The canelles are my weakness. It was sooo gooood!

そしてデザート！エリックが裏の部屋でオードブルの用意をしている時、私は小さな可愛いカヌレのトレイに気付きました。つい「オーマイガッド！これってカヌレでしょう？」と叫ぶ私を見て、エリックは笑いながら、「食べて、食べて、リマ！」とカヌレをくれたのです。その美味しかったこと！



Tibet House Museum has beautiful collections of Buddhist statues and paintings. I had my solo exhibition here some years ago. It is run by Dr. Robert Thurman, a Buddhist scholar from Columbia University. His daughter, Uma, the actress has one of my work, "Meditation Tree" (photo below) at her house. Bob Thurman and his family have been my good friends, and it is wonderful that she has one of my favorite pieces I have ever done. "Meditation Tree" was created right after my trip to Jakarta, visiting Borobudur, the biggest Buddhist ruins in the world. Because of my passionate interest in Tibet I've met so many wonderful people around the world!

チベットハウス美術館には、美しい仏像やタンカの貯蔵品が沢山展示されています。私は数年前にここで個展をしたこともありました。この美術館は、コロンビア大学教授で仏教の博士でもあるロバートサーマン教授と彼の家族によって運営されています。長年、彼らとは仲良くして来ました。彼の娘で女優のウマの豪邸には、私の「瞑想の木」が飾られています。この作品は、ジャカルタのボロブドール（世界で一番古く巨大な仏教遺跡）を訪れた後にインスパイアされて誕生した作品です。大好きなチベットのおかげで、大勢の素晴らしい人たちと巡り会って来ました、、！

Mario Batali's Eataly マリオ・バターリのイータリー

Mario Batali has been one of my favorite Italian chefs for many years. I fell in love with his food for the first time at his first restaurant, Po, in the West Village, then, of course Babbo has been on the top of my list for all these years. He recently opened this Eataly, the largest artisanal Italian market in the Flatiron area, and I had to go and try his goodies!



マリオ・バターリは、長年にわたって私のお気に入りのイタリアンシェフ。かつて、ウエストビレッジにある彼の最初のレストラン、ポーですっかり魅了され、その後、バボも私のトップリストの座を確保しています。マリオは最近フラットアイオンエリアに、この世界で最大のイタリアンアーティサナルイータリーをオープン。早速行ってみました。



However, the place was packed with people - locals, tourists and everyone! I could not even move in a big waves of people, and I felt dizzy. People were waiting in line for a half hour just to buy a sandwich... so I decided to come back some other time to eat here.

でも、マーケットはもの凄い人の渦。ローカルの人たち、観光客でごったがえしていて、身動きとれずに目眩がしてくるほど。小さなサンドイッチを買うのに３０分以上待っているようです。ですのでとりあえず、また他の機会に来ることにしました。



Just walking around the market looking at all the wonderful produce from Italy was fun enough.
They looked so tasty, the packaging was beautiful, too.

イタリアから来た様々なものを見るだけでも楽しかったです。美味しそうだし、パッケージも綺麗。



And, the sweets! Oh my goodness, they looked so good....

All sorts of jams were there... how cute... Although I was so hungry I got full looking at those wonderful products from Italy. When I came to New York in the late 1970's there was not even espresso or cappuccino available in the market. It's amazing how much things have changed...!

ジャムのセクションも可愛かったです。お腹空いてたけれど、イタリアからの素晴らしいプロダクトを見ているだけで目の保養になりました。１９７０年代の終わりに私がニューヨークに移住して来た頃は、エスプレソもカプチーノもろくになかった街。随分と変わったものだなあとつくづく思います、、！

The must list in New York NYマストリスト

I know, I know... you are saying, "My goodness, you went there again?" That is right, I did. I went to Jackson Diner in Queens again just to have this dosa. Of course I can get dosa anywhere else in the city, but I enjoy going there. I know all the waiters there and a chef who makes dosa for you. We chat, laugh, gossip... it is just a nice experience that I have been enjoying over 10 years.

分かってます、分かってます。「ええ？また行ったの？」と思っておられるのでしょう？そうですよ〜行きましたよ〜。ドサを食べにクイーンズ地区にあるジャクソンダイナーに。ドサはマンハッタンのどこでも食べることができるのですが、ここに行くのが楽しいんです。ウエイターも皆か顔見知りだし、ドサを作ってくれるシェフも。みんなとおしゃべりしたり、笑ったり、ゴシップしたり、、そんな時間もステキなんです。１０年以上そうして来ました。



The last few times I went to Balthazar those delicious canelles were always sold out, and today I finally got them! However, I bought them right after my lunch there, so I am saving them for later. They smell so good :) The canelles and dosa. They are only a few items of my must list!

ここ最近２、３度バルタザールに行くたびに、このカヌレが売り切れでした。今日やっとゲット！でもバルタザールでのゴージャスなランチの後だったので、後でいただくことにしました。甘〜い香が漂います。カヌレとドサ。ニューヨークでのマストリストの、ほんの一部です！

In New York Again...! 再びニューヨークに！

Yap, I am back again! The highlights of my stay this time are: my friend Emily's big wedding in Tribecca- Emily and I went to a prep school in New York together; then, I'll attend a private art auction event that I am helping with... to raise funds for the Tibetan Community Center. The celebrity chef, Eric Ripert will provide the goodies; also, I have a very important meeting for my work... which I will announce when it's ready! I feel great in New York. I just love it here so much... after all, it is my home.



またニューヨークです。今回の滞在のハイライトは、NYの進学学校時代の友人エミリーのビッグウエディング。それからチベタンコミュニティセンターのためのプライベートアートオークションイベントに出席するため。私もお手伝いしているのですが、私の友人でセレブシェフのエリック・リペール（ル・ベルナルダンのオーナーシェフ）が、ご馳走を提供してくれます。あとは、大事な仕事のミーティング。これはまた後で報告しますね！とにかくニューヨークにいると幸せな私。やっぱり育った故郷ですもんネ、、。

Fundraising Party at Gokokuji 護国寺での絵本チャリティパーティ

Books for Children will host a fund raising party at Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo on October 28, 2011. My new book, "Save the Himalaya" will be read by several celebrities such as, Rowland Kirishima (photographer), Midori Kiuchi (actress), Masako Shindo (television announcer) and YOU (actress). The committee members of this event project include a renowned composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, a popular rock singer, Koshi Inaba and many more.
