A Key to Happiness
I was invited to attend a very special dialogue between two Nobel Prize Laureates, H.H.The Dalai Lama and Dr. Susumu Tonegawa from MIT. Before it began I met my beloved teacher for many years who is a long-time personal attendant of His Holiness. He travels around the world all the time with HHDL, and he is extremely busy, but never forgets to be kind and attentive to others. He is truly an amazing being!
Then, the dialogue began. The theme of the dialogue was "science and compassion," "science and human heart" and so on. My seat was on the very first row and right in front of the stage! When His Holiness came on the stage he noticed me, and said "Hello!" waving his hand at me. It made me happy, but so nervous that I had to behave well and kill my yawns. I refrained from having a cough drop also!
Dr. Tonegawa, HHDL and Peter Barakan, the MC all spoke in Englsih, and since they knew that I spoke English they often talked while looking at me. That made me behave even better that I was so exhausted after the 3-hour-dialogue! lol
Needless to say that the exhaustion was a good one. The dialogue was so interesting - brain and compassion, brain and heart, the fact that meditation is good for the human brain, etc.- that I wanted to hear more and more.
I learned a lot, and to express it in one word it will be like this...:
"Real happiness does not come from materials although they make you happy for a moment. Real happiness must come within, and must be trained by yourself. Only you can bring real happiness within yourself, and we all have that potential to do so already within ourselves."
And the key to cultivating real happiness is altruism. You must find passion in helping others in your life. If you are only concerned about yourself you will never find real happiness.
I shall try my best to apply what I learned today to my daily life!

A photograph that moved me 感動をくれた一枚の写真
Yesterday I received this photo from a stranger. It is a photo of a staff member reading my book, "Wonder Garden" to the Tibetan children at a Tibetan orphanage in Nepal. When I saw those children leaning forward to see my book so eagerly I was deeply touched. It was just so wonderful to know that my books are read by many children whom I've never met!
"Wonder Garden" was the second book that my "Books for Children" created, and we donated about 2,500 copies to the Tibetan refugee schools in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The forewords were written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and professor Robert Thurman, and the special messages on the cover were written by my dear friends in Japan, a popular actress, YOU, a renowned singer, Koshi Inaba and a popular photographer, Rowland Kirishima. It is a true story that happened at the garden of the Dalai Lama, and it is a heart-warming episode of an old dog and a baby rabbit.
It is one of my favorite stories. It has been a while since I read it... I think that I shall read it again.

Incredible Shot

This amazing photo was sent to me via facebook today! During the Dalai Lama's visit to London Aung San Suu Kyi visited him. She had just received the Nobel Peace Prize the other day. This shot had been impossible in the past. "I admire your courage, and I am happy that we are able to meet," His Holiness told her.
In order to make our world a better place we must never give up, and keep on trying with hope and courage. They are the living examples, indeed, and it is needless to say that this photograph deeply moved me, and gave me hope. I wish you a long and healthy life to both of you!!!

India 8~The Conversation with The Dalai Lama~
![]() | |||||
| photo:©Yukine Yoneta 2012 |
I asked him about "identity" that had been the topic in my mind for a long time. What happens to the Tibetan nomads who are forced into the city life and they are no longer nomads? What keeps them "Tibetan"? What keeps the Japanese people Japanese...?
Then, I told him about a couple of the Muslim Tibetans in my neighbourhood. He seemed a bit surprised to hear that there are Muslim Tibetans in San Diego.
"You built a mosque for the Muslim Tibetans in Lhasa, Your Holiness," I said to him.
"No, that was the 5th Dalai Lama!," he said.
"Yes, but it is YOU!" I replied, and we laughed so much.
(In the Tibetan culture they believe that the Dalai Lamas reincarnate, therefore, the 14th Dalai Lama was the 5th Dalai Lama theoretically.)
His Holiness told me, "Identity is nothing to do with religion. It is in your heart."
As a Japanese who grew up in New York I feel more "Japanese" than the Japanese in Japan. Being a Japanese is a daily reminder here in America, but if you live in Japan you probably don't even think about it. I hate wearing a kimono, and I cannot stand some of the traditional rituals in Japan. Yet, I have a tremendous sense of pride of being Japanese, and I don't quite know why. All I know is that it is my life-time asset, and having integrity keeps me strong and centered.
His Holiness and I talked about these kind of things, and I noticed that I was not nervous at all any more. Thank God, really!

India 6~The Dalai Lama~
As it's written in the special feature on my trip to India in the SPUR magazine (June issue) I was fortunate enough to have an audience with H.H. The Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. Although I have met him many times in the past it was my second official audience. My main purpose was to report him that I had created my fourth children's book on the environmental issue, and had donated them to seventy seven Tibetan refugee schools in exile, as I promised him two years ago.
Usually my head goes blank in front of The Dalai Lama, get very emotional and end up crying. However, this time, I held back my tears hard and focused on my report. Yet, when he gave me a khata (a white greeting scarf) I sobbed again. There was a man, in front of me in India, who should be sitting at his Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. He has been in exile over fifty years working tirelessly for his people and country. I keep praying for his return to Tibet along with many, many Tibetans very soon, and shall continue whatever I can to help Tibet, a beautiful, beautiful country.

Kalachakra 2012 in Bodhgaya

The 32nd Kalachakra is now going on in Bodhgaya, India. Kalachakra translates as "wheel of time" in Sanskrit, and it is a Buddhist prayer for the world peace (although the content of the teaching is highly complex.) Currently 200,000 people are participating the teachings led by the Dalai Lama.

Kalachakra cannot be done without this intricate and exquisite sand mandala created by the Buddhist monks and the Dalai Lama. It takes days to complete it. It is an offering to the universe, therefore, after it's completed the monks destroy it with the brushes. The collected sand is provided to the participants, and it is also poured into a river or an ocean.
Many of my friends from all over the world are now attending this amazing Kalachakra. I wanted to go so badly, but knowing myself really well I didn't. Bodhgaya is not a piece of cake - it is not clean, and the facilities are not so good. Even the Dalai Lama joked yesterday, "You all came here to get sick! lol" So I am watching the teachings on the webcast. Thanks to the modern technology! I don't have to be in India in order to receive a priceless teachings from a living masters those days. Of course, it is the best to be there..., but for a person like me who gets sick in India often, the webcast is perfect. What is really important is to apply what you learn in your everyday life after all.

Rebirth and Reincarnation
Every year on my birthday I do two things: to thank my parents to bring me into this world and think about death. (yep, such Buddhist of me! Oh, by the way, the photo above is not me - it's the Dalai Lama and his mother. I found this photo in an 11th-century-monastery in Ladakh.) Birthdays bring me closer to death, and strangely it is not a bad feeling. I'm not saying that I look forward to my death, but I certainly don't want to live forever. I see too much suffering in the world, and the world today is not definitely a place that I wish to come back to. However, as a Buddhist who believes in rebirth, I know that I will have to return, hopefully as in another human form (rather than an animal!)
So what is the difference between rebirth and reincarnation? According to my teacher who's a Tibetan Buddhist monk, here is a simple explanation: In a Buddhist belief when a person dies his/her physical body dies, but his/her mind (consciousness or energy) continues. The mind eventually will have another physical body as another person, but he/she will not have the same characters, emotions or past memories. Reincarnation indicates different physical bodies with eternal souls, and usually Hindus, Jains and some Christians believe in reincarnation. Buddhists do not believe in reincarnation (eternal self), but believe in human consciousness.
However, people who are highly enlightened, such as the Dalai Lamas, are considered special cases. Those people's minds/consciousness are able to choose their rebirth at their death - in other words, they can choose to continue to have the same personalities, characteristics of the previous lives such as memories and ideas. You've lost me already? I know, it's complicated!
So, who cares about this difference? Who really knows the truth anyway, and does it matter?
I don't know the answer. Perhaps it is just a theory - something to debate in a philosophy or dharma class. The important thing is to live your life fully. That means to do what you love, have a passion, make yourself useful to others, be kind, give love, receive love, take what you need, give what you can... just in case that you will have to come back again :)
On my birthday, I truly wish that every single person on Earth will have enough to eat, have a shelter, have the basic human rights, education, good care and lots and lots of love. *Thank You*

The Dalai Lama and dogs

I love dogs, and I love the fact that the Dalai Lama, my most respected one, loves dogs, too. One can tell from this photo above that he is very natural with dogs - the way he holds the dog is so gentle and comfortable. The dog seems to be very fond of him, too. I believe that this is not his dog. However, those Tibetan Apsos (photo below) were his dogs. How cute they were!

I heard that His Holiness was very sad after those dogs passed away. So ever since after his pets' death, he never named other dogs that he had adopted.... to avoid attachment.

This is a portrait of his late dog that I had painted, an old German shepherd that he had adopted in order to save him from being killed. I offered this piece to the Dalai Lama as a gift.
This "meditating" dog is my pug, Chai Tandoori. Pugs come from Tibet and Japan originally, and they were monastery dogs in the 11th Century in Tibet. I have a special thing for pugs. Perhaps I was a pug in Tibet in my past lives! lol I know that Chai wants to have a brother... maybe in a few years I will get him a nice Tibetan apso named "Maccha" (green tea). Chai, would you like that?

50th Kee Magazine Special Japan Issue Kee

So it finally arrived. The Kee Magazine's 50th special Japan issue that I had done the cover for. Kee Magazine is one of the most high-end luxurious magazines in HK, and the editor-in-chief is a Scottish woman who is so powerful and creative. This special issue is a dedication for Japan and its Tsunami victims, and it features the Japanese top creators and celebrities such as Kenzo (fashion designer), Hidetoshi Nakata (soccer player), Ryuichi Sakamoto (composer) and more... oh, and me! :) The issue is beautiful with a hard cover, and colorful pages. The quality is exquisite. I love this piece that I've done for the cover - "Hope for Japan" - I really put my love for my country into it.

I was honored when the editor-in-chief, Ann, of the Kee Magazine had asked me to write a foreword...

The day before this magazine arrived I had had a nightmare dream: I was about to be taken by a giant tsunami, and it was horrifying. I woke up crying in fear. Then I could only imagine what the tsunami victims had gone through. I cannot find the words to describe how scary it was. It was beyond words. As my heart is still bleeding in pain a healing episode arrived from Tokyo.

On April 29 the Dalai Lama offered a special 49th-day-prayer for the tsunami victims at Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo. A friend of mine who is a monk at Gokokuji told me that after a long prayer the Dalai Lama gave a heart warming speech in tears. It was a sunny day, but suddenly it began raining as his tears rolled down. After his speech when he was leaving the temple the sun came back shining again. This reminded me of the rainy day in New York when I was waiting for his teaching to begin. As soon as he arrived the sun appeared. I have heard many stories like this about the Dalai Lama. Coincidence? Maybe so. Yet, they are wonderful episodes that light up people's heart. It certainly soothed my heart aching. I shall turn this pain into my energy to take action to help my country.

Historical moment for Tibet

As of the end of March this year His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama stepped down from the politics. He resigned as a political leader of the Tibetan government of exile. This is a huge change in Tibet's history since the dalai lamas had been ruling the government for many centuries, and I must say that this is a historical moment. Since the 60's the Dalai Lama has been saying to the Tibetans, "Our political leader should be chosen by people," and he recently said, "The political rule by the spiritual leaders and rajas are now outdated." He officially stepped down despite many opposition. When I heard the news I cried. Tears rolled down as I felt happy for him - he's worked so hard. He is truly a very smart man. He knows that the world is changing, and that the young Tibetans want a political leader who is not a monk.

I wonder if the Dalai Lama will be meeting the world political leaders less frequently from now on...?

The Tibetans, the young and old, all love and respect the Dalai Lama. However, many young Tibetans seek "independence" of Tibet that contradicts the Dalai Lama's middle way policy. They feel that they have to be more responsible about Tibet's future and get more involved with their politics. On March 20 the election for the next Kalon Tripa (prime minister of the Tibetan government in exile) took place world wide. So many Tibetans went to vote including many elderly Tibetans of age 90! The photo below is the three leading candidates for the next prime minister. From left, Tashi Wangdi, Tenzin Tethong and Lobsang Sangay. I personally know them all, and they are all very smart, talented and great candidates. At the end of April this year the government will announce the newly elected prime minister. Until then, we just have to wait as we hope for the stronger Tibet's future!
