Power of music 音楽のパワー

I went to hear the Mahler's #5 by one of the biggest stars in the classic music world, Gustavo Dudamel at the Walt Disney Music Hall in LA. I am a huge Dudamel fan. His dynamic and passionate work has been alluring not only me, but many around the world. His charm is not only his dramatic conducting - he has been contributing so much to the society. He wants to make our world a better place with his music.

ロスアンジェルスのディズニーホールにて、クラシック音楽界の
大スター、グスタボ・ドウダメル指揮によるマーラーの第５番を
聴きに行って来ました。私はドウダメルの大ファン。そのダイナミック
でパワフルで情熱的な指揮は、世界中の人々を魅了しています。
彼の魅力はドラマティックな指揮だけではありません。私が
大ファンになった一番の理由は、彼の「社会への奉仕」の姿勢。
音楽をツールとして世の中を良くしたいという考えが、彼の
真髄にあるのです。

Dudamel is from Venezuela, and he has been a director of the famous Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra since 1999. The orchestra members are young between the age of 18 and 28, and 75% of them come from below poverty level. Music has been giving them a chance for a better life. Mahler's 5th by those young members were fantastic! Truly fantastic! The stage seemed filled with passion and moving. The standing ovation went on more than 10 minutes, and I had never seen anything like that before!

ベネズエラ出身のドウダメルは、かの有名な
シモン・ボリバル・シンフォニーオーケストラという１８歳から２８歳
をメインとしたオーケストラのディレクターも１９９９年から務めて
います。オーケストラメンバーの若者たちの７５％が、貧困レベル
以下の生活をする家族の出身で、ドウダメルは、音楽を通して
彼らに良い将来を築くチャンスを与えているのです。この青年たち
によるマーラーの５番は最高でした。皆の情熱がガンガンと伝わって
来て、なんとスタンディングオベーションが１０分以上。こんなの
初めて経験しましたよ！



For 75 minutes my mind was drifting while being mesmerized by Dudamel's powerful and sensitive performance... Who would not think of Thomas Mann's Death in Venice (by Visconti)?
I saw that beautiful masterpiece so many times. Then I remembered my memorable trip to Venice - lovely walks, tasty espressos at cafes, sweet cream puffs that I had every morning, and hearty pastas... "Yes! Tonight's dinner will be spaghetti!" I shouted in my heart as the Mahler's 5th was getting close to the end. Oh, music and art... they are just superb!!!

ドウダメルの強く、かつセンシティブな指揮に見とれながら、
７５分間、私の頭の中は彼方此方彷徨っていました、、。
マーラーの５番と言えば、ヴィスコンティ監督、
トーマス・マンの「ベニスに死す」を思い出さない人はいないでしょう。
何度も観たあの美しい名作。私自身のベニスでの散歩、一息した
カフェでのエスプレッソ、毎朝食べたクリームたっぷりの
イタリアンペイストリー、そしてディナーで堪能したパスタ、、。
う～ん、今夜はスパゲッティだっ！と、マーラーの音色に酔いしれ
ながら決めたのでした。ああ、やっぱり芸術はすばらしい！！！
