Hats of nostalgy? 懐かしい帽子

This is a photo of me, an anti-fur person with a Tibetan fur hat, and it was taken at the gala dinner for Tibet at the Hotel Pierre a few years ago in New York. The celebrity chefs including Eric Ripert cooked for this glamorous event. Actually, this hat made me think for many days - as an anti-fur I did not feel right to wear it because it would make me a hypocrite.  However, as for a special gift from a Tibetan woman who cared so much about me I did not want to waste the hat either. So I decided to wear it for only the Tibetan occasions to celebrate the culture.

をかぶっている写真です。２年前、ニューヨークはホテル
ピエールで開催されたチベットのためのガラパーティ。
エリック・リペールをはじめ、NYのトップシェフたちが腕を
振るいました。実はこの帽子、ひどく悩んだ品です。毛皮
を買わない主義がこれをかぶったらヒポクリットになってしまう、、。
でも、大切なチベット人の友人が心を込めてプレゼントして
くれた帽子でもあり、迷いに迷ったあげく、チベット関連の
イベントにはかぶることにしたのです。


 

The hats are all hand-made and hand-stitched with sparkling beautiful design. Winter in Tibet is severe, and those fur hats are practical and necessary. To be honest, those hats make me feel nostalgic... perhaps I used to wear them in my past lives?


帽子は滅茶苦茶可愛いデザインです！全て手作りで、
刺繍がキラキラ輝いているんです。冬はかなり寒い
チベットでは、必需品なのですね。でも、正直言うと、
この帽子、なんだか懐かしい気持ちがしてならないのです。
前世でもかぶっていたのでしょうか。
 

Well, well, well, this is a Tibetan hat, too! However, this cannot be a necessity. Actually, this hat is for rituals and festivals, and I wonder what the inside of the hat is like...??? I definitely would love to check it out one day!

あらら、こちらもチベットの帽子。でも、これは
必需品ではないですネ。これはお祭りの行事に
かぶる帽子のひとつ。それにしても、中はどうなって
るんでしょう？是非見てみたいものです！

My Talk at Trace Foundation トレイス・ファンデーションでの講演

I would like to thank everyone who came to my talk at Trace Foundation on May 10 in New York! 
Thursday nights in New York are popular event nights, and there were so much going on that Thursday, but many came to hear my talk, and I am so grateful. Thank you, thank you! Trace/Laste was founded by George Soros' family and it is an elegant and beautiful library with high-end design. All the staffs there are extremely smart, so I was extra nervous to talk that night!


先日のニューヨークでの私の講演にいらして
下さった皆さま、もう一度ありがとうございました！
トレイスファンデーションは、かのジョージ・ソロス
によって建てられた素晴らしい財団で、中のライブラリー
は、ハイエンドでとてもエレガントなデザインです。
ここのスタッフも皆、異常なインテリばかりで、
さすがに、この日はマジで緊張しました～！

After my talk we had three special guest readers - Tracy Straus for English. She and I went to high school together in New York. Tracy is an accomplished actress, dancer and producer, and read from my book as a fabulous Broadway star!


私の講演の後は、３人のゲストリーダーによる朗読がありました。英語担当は、トレイシーストラウス。ハイスクール時代からの仲良しの彼女は、女優、ダンサー、プロデューサーとして活躍しています。いかにもブロードウエイの女優らしい朗読をしてくれました！

Sonam Wangdue read from my book, Save the Himalayas in Tibetan. He is one of the funniest men I've ever met. Needless to say that he was hysterically funny!


ソナム・ウオンドユウは、有名なチベット人俳優／コメディアンで多くの映画にも出演しています。出会った人の中で一番面白いかも！

A brilliant journalist from Nikkei News, Maho Kawachi read from my book in Japanese. She was so dignified! 

素晴らしい記事を書く日経ジャーナリストの 河内真帆さんは、日本語で朗読してくれました。その堂々たる姿には感動しました！





So many came on a very competitive Thursday night :)

ニューヨークの木曜日は人気のイベントナイト。
にも関わらず、沢山がいらしてくれて感激！

 I was so happy to have some Tibetan children there, too. They were so cute!

チベット人の子供達も来てくれて嬉しかったです。なんて可愛いかったこと！

Trace/Latse is on a very quiet and lovely Perry Street, and it is definitely a "hidden gem."  My original art will be up for several more days, so please stop by and take a look.
There is a beautiful terrace garden, art collections and a library, and I guarantee you that you will have a wonderful time there.

Pugo de Mayo 〜パゴ・デ・マヨ〜

Cinco de Mayo means "Fifth of May" in Spanish, and it's a celebration of the Mexico's victory over France on May 5th in 1862. We went to the "Pugo de Mayo," a large pug gathering that is held annually in Del Mar. Our pug, Chai partied hard with a Mexican hat and a poncho!


「チンコ・デ・マヨ」とはスペイン語で「５月５日」という意味。
この日は１８６２年にメキシコがフランスとの戦争に勝った日
で、今日になってもお祭りの日となっています。私たちは
毎年開催されるパグ犬の集まり「パゴ・デ・マヨ」に参加
して来ました。私のパグ犬チャイも、メキシカンハットと
ポンチョでバッチリ決めましたよ！

 There were a few hundred of pugs that were all dressed up in colorful costumes. This bunny pug was a 13 yrs-old madame, and
still very, very charming!


色とりどりの衣装を着た（着せられて？）パグたちが
数百匹いました。このバニーパグは１３歳のマダム。
まだまだチャーミングだこと！

 This framboyant orange & yellow frilled dress stole the show, I must say... The owner of this pug was quite dramatic, too ;p

このオレンジ＆イエローのフリフリドレスは凄かった。
飼い主の女性も負けないくらい凄かったです。

This lovely pug is Sora, my friend's female pug. She is so popular everywhere she goes... It was overwhelming to see so many pugs that looked just like our pug. If they all took off their colors and I.D. tags it's quite possible that we all might take the wrong ones home with us!
 
この可愛いパグは、私の友人のパグ、ソラちゃん。
どこに行ってもモテモテです。それにしても、うちの
チャイにそっくりなパグがいたいた！首輪もタグも
全て取り外したパグたちが勢揃いしたら、うっかり他の
パグを家に連れて帰ってしまいそう、、、！笑

India 7~ The Tibetan cuisine~ インドへの旅７〜チベット料理〜

We enjoyed the tasty Tibetan cuisine everyday while we were in Dharamsala, a beautiful town in the Himalayas because so many Tibetan refugees live there. Since I no longer could eat any more spicy food the Tibetan cuisine was my savior. Tibetan food can be spicy, but there are many dishes that are not. One night we were invited to my Tibetan friend's family home for a typical Tibetan dinner: from the left, sauteed green vegetable, daal (lentil soup), chapati bread (that is Indian actually), sauteed cabbage with gram masala and sweet chai. A huge load of white rice is a Tibetan style!

数日間滞在したヒマラヤの麓の街、ダラムサラでは、
毎日美味しいチベット料理を食べることができました。
ダラムサラには亡命して来たチベット人が沢山住んで
いるからです。辛いチリが全く食べれなくなってしまった
私にとっては、特に有り難かった。北インド料理と違って
チベット料理には辛くないものもあるからです。上の写真
は、チベット人の友人の自宅へ招かれていただいた、
典型的な夕ご飯です。左から、青野菜の油炒め、ダル
（レンズ豆のスープ）、チャパティ（パン）、キャベツのグラム
マサラ炒め。そしてスイートチャイ。白いご飯てんこ盛りは
チベタンスタイル！

 

Our last dinner in Dharamsala was of course Tibetan: from the left, tinmo (steamed bread), momos (dumplings), corn soup, pinsha (bean thread noodles and potatoes) and the momo soup with lots of spinach that I ordered. It healed my tired body completely! I am going back to New York very soon, and so looking forward to have some good momos there!

ディナー。左から、ティンモ（花巻）、コーンスープ、
モモ（チベット餃子）、ピンシャスープ（春雨＆ジャガイモ）、
そして手前は私が頼んだモモスープ。ほうれん草たっぷり
で、疲れた体が癒されました～。もうすぐ又ニューヨークへ
戻ります。チベタンが多く住むNYでは本場のモモが
食べれるので、今からワクワクしています！

Elephants that paint 絵を描くゾウさん

I saw a video of the elephant in Thailand painting his own portrait on facebook today, and just could not believe my own eyest! It was incredible. This elephant also could paint flowers and color them, too!
今日、フェイスブックで送られて来たビデオを見てビックリ！
タイのゾウさんたちが上手に絵を描いているではありませんか。
しかも、自画像やお花、色付けまで。凄い！



Although I was so taken by the elephant's techniques to paint my feeling sank as I wondered how the elephants might be trained to do so...
驚きと共に、どうやったらゾウさん達がこんなに上手に
絵を描けるようになるのかを想像したら、ふと気が重くなりました、、。




As a big elephant lover I could not resist to investigate. I found so many sites that explained how elephants were severely abused in order to be trained to paint. As I had guessed there was a dark side behind the magnificent "Painting Elephants Shows."
私は大のゾウさん好き。このブログのトップも私が
描いた大好きなゾウさんの絵です。色々調べてみたら、
やっぱり、あの華やかな「ゾウさんが絵を描くショー」
の裏では、信じられない残酷な虐待があると、多くの
サイトで書かれていました。



Not only for the "Painting Elephants" but the horrible abuse takes place for the circus and tourism (such as "ride on the elephants.") The sites explained that the elephants go through a long period of abuse until they master the painting technique. The paintings done by the elephants are sold at twenty dollars and up, and since many tourists buy them as souvenirs it is a huge local business in Thailand. It is truly heart breaking and quite sad to have to abuse animals for business.

A journalist friend of mine once investigated on the popular dolphin shows, and unfortunately the story behind was the same - those dolphins were severely abused and not fed enough at all.
I know that this is a complicated and heavy topic, but perhaps it may be wise to think over before going to those animal shows...? because we have a choice, after all.

サーカス、観光客を乗せて歩くツアーも同じですが、
ゾウが絵を描けるようになるまでは、ひどい虐待が
続くようです、、。ゾウさんが描いた絵は、一枚２千円
くらいから売られます。「絵を描くゾウさんツアー」に
参加した観光客たちは、その絵を買って帰るので、
良いビジネスとなっているようです。タイのゾウさんの
虐待はひどいと聞いていましたが、これにも心が
痛みます、、。ジャーナリストの親友が、イルカのショー
について調べた時もそうでした。可愛いイルカたちは
裏ではろくに餌ももらえず、ひどい虐待を受けています。

今日は暗いトピックになってしまいましたが、
皆さんも、何かの動物のショーなどに今後行く時は、
是非、一度考えていただけたら嬉しいです。
