Yesterday I received the letters from the third grade children in a public school near Los Angels who have read my book, "Save the Himalayas." I had no idea about this, so I was deeply moved by it. The children's letters all began with "Dear Rima" and talked about how they learned about Tibet, environment, endangered animals and so on. They were written in big letters! They also wrote, "I am going to recycle" and "I want to be an artist like you." How sweet it that?
There was some funny ones, too. One letter said, "I learned that I should not mess up in life." lol
I contacted the teacher who sent me the letters to thank them. The teacher said to me, "Those children all live under the average poverty level, and they know about hardship, and that makes them very compassionate, too. They all loved your book. Thank you so much for making this book."
Needless to say that it made me tear up. It's the best gift. I shall write back to each child this summer.
What they sent me were letters of love, indeed. True love letters. Thank you.
ロスアンジェルスの近くの、ある公立小学校の３年生たち
が、私の絵本を読んで下さったそうで、皆がお手紙を
送ってくれました。全く知らなかったので、感動しました！
子供たちの手紙には、「ディア・リマ」と言う始まりに続き、大きな
字で「この絵本を読んで、チベットのこと、環境のこと、
消えつつある動物について知ることができて、うれしい」
とか、「リサイクルするようにします」とか、「あなたのような
画家になりたい」などが綴られていました。
中でも大笑いしたのが、「この絵本を読んで、人生でグダグダ
していてはいけないと思った」というレター。３年生なのにスゴイ！
お手紙を送ってくださった先生に、お礼の連絡を
してみると、先生はこう言いました。
「この子供達の殆どは、平均以下の貧困生活を
している子供達ばかりです。だから彼らはハードシップ
（苦労）を知っている。だから思いやりの心もより強い
んです。皆、本当に喜んでいました。この絵本を
作ってくださった貴女に感謝します」
う～。涙が出ました。最高のギフトです。
子供たち、ひとりひとりにお返事を書こうと思います。
彼らが贈ってくれたのは、まさに愛の手紙。ラブレター。
