Lost Buddha 消えたブッダ

If I were a super wealthy billionaire I would be collecting numerous Buddha statues from the Gandhara (the Kushan period.) Those exotic statues that are exquiste mixtures of East and West have been spread out all over the world to be collected and exhibited. This torso (photo) has just arrived to the San Diego Museum of Art. I cannot help imagining what kind of head it used to have... and where could the head be now? I can wonder about those things for days and nights.

もしも私が億万長者の大富豪だったとしたら、クシャーン時代のガンダーラの仏像や仏頭を集めていたと思います。この何とも言えなく美しい東洋と西洋が溶け合った像は、今日世界中あちこちの美術館やコレクターの手元に散らばっています。この上の写真のトルソは、つい最近、サンディエゴ美術館にやって来ました。一体、どんな頭がついていたのか？そしてその仏頭は今、どこにあるのか、、？そんなことを想いふけると何時間も経ってしまうのです。


I have posted this photo of the Buddha head before. I spent years looking for this head. I have asked the numbers of famous scholars and researchers, experts, curators and professors all over the world, but no one seemed to know where this head is. Some said that it had been destroyed most likely. How sad is that..? This Buddha head is unbelievably special to me. I don't know why, but every time I look at it it moves my heart so deeply. Is it possible that I was the artist who had sculpted this masterpiece??? ;)-

以前ここでも掲載したこの仏頭の写真。これが今どこにあるのか探し出して何年もが過ぎました。世界中の著名学者や教授、リサーチのプロ、キュレイターや専門家に聞いて回ったのですが、誰にも分かりませんでした。その中の数人は、「残念ながらこの仏頭は破壊されてしまっていると思う」と言っていました。ショックで悲しいです。なぜか分からないけれど、この仏頭を見るたびに、心から深く感動するのです。もしかしたら私、この仏頭を作ったアーティストだったのかも、、？？？笑
