More photos from my opening have arrived. These were taken by my lovely friend, Teresa Heath. Those ladies whom I was talking to were about to go to Tibet, and they were so excited. They asked me how I enjoyed Tibet, and when I told them that I had never beet to Tibet they were so surprised. Actually I don't know if I ever will go to Tibet in this life time... I do want to go, of course, but at the same time I am so scared to see the Tibetans' lives under the severe Chinese occupation.



ビバリーヒルズでの個展オープニングの写真がまた届きました。これらは友人の写真家のテレサ・ヒースが撮ってくれたもの。この上の写真で私がお話をしている奥様たちは、近々チベットへ行くのだと目をキラキラと輝かせて私に言うのです。「あなたはチベット楽しんだ？」と聞かれた私が、チベットにはまだ行っていないと答えると、かなりビックリしておられました。実は、私はチベットに生涯行けるかどうかは分かりません、、。もちろん行きたい気持ちは一杯ですが、支配下できつい生活をしているチベット人を見たくない気持ちも強いからです、、。

オープニングではお話するチャンスが無かった方々がいっぱい、、、。



The galley says that many people are visiting my exhibition every day, and are enjoying my art. Some friends of mine who did not make it to the opening have been checking out my show including a friend from Scotland and my long-time friend, Koshi Inaba who is one of the top rock stars in Japan happened to be in LA, and went to my exhibition... and purchased a piece of the snow leopard babies. Not only he is one of the biggest collectors of my work he's been a strong supporter of my work and a dear friend. Other clients purchased a tiger piece and others... people love animals, and especially those animals I've drawn are endangered animals of the Himalayas. May those animals live long and be happy!



ギャラリーには毎日多くの人々が絵を見に来てくださっています。オープニングに来れなかった友人たちも色んなところから駆けつけてくれていて、先日は、スコットランドの友人や、LAにいた稲葉浩志君が来てくれて、しかも雪豹の赤ちゃんの作品を購入してくれました。彼は私の作品の最大なコレクターの一人だけでなく、長年の応援者で、親友でもあります。他のアメリカ人のクライアントの方々は、虎の作品などを購入して下さいました。人間の多くは動物が好きですよね。特にヒマラヤの絶滅の危機に瀕している動物たち、、。これらの生き物が、長く長く幸せに暮らせますように、、！

Hotel Beverly Hilton ビバリーヒルトンホテル

The day before my exhibition opening in Beverly Hills I checked in at the Beverly Hilton. Actually I rather wanted to stay at the Wilshire/Four Seasons (where the movie, "Pretty Woman" was shot), but the Beverly Hilton was so convenient that I would be able to walk to the gallery in 7 minuets. So without knowing very much about this hotel I just booked it. The flower　arrangement at the lobby was really lovely.

ビバリーヒルズでの個展が始まる前日は、ビバリーヒルトンにチェックインしました。本当はウイルシャイヤー／フォーシーズンズホテル（映画「プリティウーマン」の舞台にもなった高級ホテル）に泊まりたかったのですが、ビバリーヒルトンはギャラリーから歩いてたったの７分という便利さからここにしたのです。このホテルのことはあまり知らないままブッキング。到着するとロビーのお花がなんともラブリーでした。



At the check in I noticed that the hotel had a retro ambiance. Something old and nice. No wonder - this historical hotel was built by Conrad Hilton in 1955, and was owned by a popular actor Marv Griffin for some years. Many glamorous parties were held here including the Academy Awards. J.F.Kennedy and Bill Clinton used to stay here, too. The hotel certainly has the retro feeling everywhere.

ホテルはなんとも言えないレトロな雰囲気が漂っていました。何か古くてステキ。聞くところによれば、このホテルは１９５５年にコンラッドヒルトンによって建てられ、しばらくは人気俳優マーヴグリフィンがオーナーだったそうです。なのでここで無数の豪華でグラマラスなパーティが開かれたそうです。アカデミー賞授賞式なども。そして、故ケネディ大統領やクリントン元大統領などもここにステイしたそう。ホテルはそんな歴史が漂っていました。





During my stay at this hotel there were at least three fancy parties going on at the Ballroom. Everyone was dressed in black ties and satin cocktail dresses. However, what I enjoyed the most about this hotel was in the hallways. There were numerous black & white photographs of the movie stars on the wall on each floor. I was told that they were real prints and done by famous photographers. I found this rare photo of my favorite actress, Audrey Hepburn!

私が泊まっている間だけでも３つのパーティがボールルームで行われていました。ゲストは皆、ブラックタイにサテンのカクテルドレス。でも私が一番気に入ったのは、そんなグラマーなシーンでなく、廊下でした。各階の廊下には、本物の白黒の写真が飾られています。被写体はかつてのハリウッドスターたちで、フォトグラファーも有名な人たちばかりだそうです。ほら、こんなオードリーヘップバーンの珍しい写真も！



We had breakfasts by the pool every morning. It was quiet and peaceful, and I truly enjoyed this retro feeling about this hotel.

このプールサイドで毎朝朝食をいただきました。静かでピースフルで、このレトロ感が素晴らしい。


Then, I discovered that this peaceful pool can turn into a spectacular cinema theater! What a transformation. The Beverly Hilton is still glamorous after all...!

でも、この静かなプールが、こんなにスペクタキュラーなシネマ会場に変身することを発見！
このビバリーヒルトンもやっぱり未だにグラマラスなんですねえ〜！

Panini! パニーニ！

My recent toy addiction is this panini maker. It makes great panini, the grilled sandwiches! I cannot wait to have lunch every day, and since it needs to be preheated before making the panini I hang around in my kitchen from 10:30am on! This Hamilton panini maker was inexpensive, small, compact and so easy to use. I am lovin' it!

最近の私のマイブームは、このパニーニメイカーです。美味しいパニーニを作ってくれるんです！毎日ランチをするのが待ちきれない私。パンをグリルする前にプリヒートしなくてはならないので、もう１０時半くらいからキッチンでウロウロする始末。このハミルトン社のパニーニメイカーは、安くて小さくてコンパクトで使いやすい。もう大好きです！



Today I made a panini with organic turkey, spinach and mozzarella cheese. I put some fresh rosemary that I grow in my garden... and, oh, yes, the kosher pickles on the side. I sprinkled some olive oil on bread before grilling, so it gives such a lovely aroma and flavor...!!! Tomorrow I will make one with some portobello mushroom and eggplants. This panini maker is giving me a small joy in daily life... that is such a treasure :)

今日はオーガニックターキーとほうれん草とモッツアレラチーズのパニーニを作りました。お庭で育てたローズマリーも添えたぞ、、、あ、そしてそうそう、コーシャーピクルスも。パンはグリルする前にオリーブオイルをチョロチョロっとふって。そうすると焼けた時にこんがりと香ばしいアロマがたまりません。明日は、ポルトベロマッシュルームと茄子にしようかな。このパニーニメイカー、普段の日常生活で小さな幸せを運んでくれている宝ですネ。

50th Kee Magazine Special Japan Issue Kee誌特別ジャパン号

So it finally arrived. The Kee Magazine's 50th special Japan issue that I had done the cover for. Kee Magazine is one of the most high-end luxurious magazines in HK, and the editor-in-chief is a Scottish woman who is so powerful and creative. This special issue is a dedication for Japan and its Tsunami victims, and it features the Japanese top creators and celebrities such as Kenzo (fashion designer), Hidetoshi Nakata (soccer player), Ryuichi Sakamoto (composer) and more... oh, and me! :) The issue is beautiful with a hard cover, and colorful pages. The quality is exquisite. I love this piece that I've done for the cover - "Hope for Japan" - I really put my love for my country into it.

とうとう届きました。Keeマガジン５０号特別「ジャパン」。Kee誌は香港ベストワンと言われているハイエンドなラグジュリーマガジンで、編集長はスコットランド人のパワフルな女性です。この特別号は日本の津波と地震で亡くなった人たちへ捧げられおり、デザイナーのKenzo氏、サッカー選手の中田英寿氏、コンポーザーの坂本龍一氏などがフィーチャーされています。（あ、そして私も。笑）とにかく美しい作りでクオリティも完璧。私はカバーのために描いたこの作品「日本への希望」がとても気に入っています。祖国への愛を込めて描きました。編集長が売り上げの半分を日本へ寄付するということで、もちろん私もギャラをいただくことはお断りしました。皆で日本のために作られた特別号です。




I was honored when the editor-in-chief, Ann, of the Kee Magazine had asked me to write a foreword...
編集長が、是非、序文を書いて下さいと言って下さったので喜んで書かせていただきました。



The day before this magazine arrived I had had a nightmare dream: I was about to be taken by a giant tsunami, and it was horrifying. I woke up crying in fear. Then I could only imagine what the tsunami victims had gone through. I cannot find the words to describe how scary it was. It was beyond words. As my heart is still bleeding in pain a healing episode arrived from Tokyo.

実は、この号が届く前の夜に、ひどい悪夢を見たのです。夢の中で私は津波に襲われたんです。怖くて泣き叫びながら目を覚ましました。あの恐怖たるや表現する言葉がみつかりません。実際に津波に襲われた方々の気持ちが少し想像できるくらいでした。心が痛む中、日本からひとつの心温まるエピソードが届いたのです。



On April 29 the Dalai Lama offered a special 49th-day-prayer for the tsunami victims at Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo. A friend of mine who is a monk at Gokokuji told me that after a long prayer the Dalai Lama gave a heart warming speech in tears. It was a sunny day, but suddenly it began raining as his tears rolled down. After his speech when he was leaving the temple the sun came back shining again. This reminded me of the rainy day in New York when I was waiting for his teaching to begin. As soon as he arrived the sun appeared. I have heard many stories like this about the Dalai Lama. Coincidence? Maybe so. Yet, they are wonderful episodes that light up people's heart. It certainly soothed my heart aching. I shall turn this pain into my energy to take action to help my country.

それは、４月２９日に東京の護国寺にて、４９日特別慰霊法要をしに来て下さったダライラマ法王のエピソードでした。護国寺にいるお坊さんの友人がわざわざメールを送って下さったのです：長いお祈りの後に、ダライラマ法王はスピーチをなさり、何度も涙を流しながらお話をなさったそうです。その日は晴れのお天気だったのですが、ダライラマ法王が涙を流されると外はすぐに雨が降り出したそうです。そしてお話が終わり、皆が外に出ると、また太陽が出て来てあたりを明るくして下さったのでした。

それを聞いて、ニューヨークでのことを思い出しました。ある雨の日、ダライラマ法王の講演の開始を待っていた時、ダライラマ法王が会場へ到着したとたんに太陽が出て来て雨が止んだのでした。
偶然のこと？そうかも知れません、、。でも、それでも素晴らしい出来事ですよネ。心がパッと明るくなるようなステキな出来事だと思いました。私の心が和らいだのは言うまでもありません。胸の痛みを行動に移すエナジーとして、祖国日本のために役立つことをして行きたいと思います。

Gustavo Dudamel and David Afkham デュダメルとアフカム

On the next day of my exhibition opening in LA I was invited to go to a classical concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as a surprise gift. Being a huge classical music fan I was so excited. I had purchased a ticket for Dudamel's concert for May 28 six months ago, and that was the earliest one I could get. This concert was not to be conducted by Dudamel, the popular music director of the LA Philharmonic, but so what? I was still very happy to hear the Beethoven's 5th.

個展のオープニングの翌日は、ある方からウオルトディズニーコンサートホールでのクラシックコンサートに招待されました。クラシック音楽ファンとしては嬉しいサプライズでした。私は半年以上も前に、やっとデュダメルのチケットをゲットしたくらい（まだ先の５月２８日のコンサートです）で、それが一番早くとれる彼のチケットだったのです。デュダメルは今、一番人気が高いと言える指揮者で、LAフィルハーモニックオーケストラのディレクターでもあります。この夜のコンサートの指揮者はデュダメルでないと聞きましたが、全然平気！ベートーベンの第５を聴けるなんて幸せ。



The hall was designed by Frank Gehry. He is not my favorite architect, but I appreciated his usage of wood that gave the hall a warm and welcoming ambiance. I was surprised to see that there were many people sitting on the back of the orchestra, and wondered about the sound system there. Normally the best sound would be the front of the stage.

コンサートホールは、かのフランクゲリイがデザインしました。私が好きな建築家じゃないけれど、温かい雰囲気を出す木材を使っていたことは良かったな。ステージの後ろにも沢山お客さんがいたのにはビックリ。普通、音はステージの前が一番良いものですけれど、後ろの音響はどんなだったのだろう？



I did not know who the conductor would be that night. I have seen Dudamel's performance only on television so far. He is extremely passionate, dramatic and powerful. He has brought a fresh and young wind into a dying classical industry, I must say, because I know that many people have begun having interests in classical music because of him.

デュダメルが指揮者でないことは知っていましたが、誰が指揮者なのか気にもしてませんでした。デュダメルのパーフォーマンスはまだテレビで見ただけですが、とても情熱的でドラマティックでパワフル。彼は死にかけているクラシック音楽産業に、フレッシュで若い風を運んできてくれましたね。多くの人たちが彼の影響でクラシック音楽を聴きに行くようになったようです。


How can you say no to this his charisma?!?　このカリスマに「ノー」なんて言えませんよネ！




Well, well, well. Let me tell you what happened. The conductor of that night's concert could not make it for some reason, so this young man was the substitute. Oh my god. He was like a rising star! (Well, he is...since he won the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in 2008.) He is David Afkham, a 27-yr-old assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He is tall, slender, elegant and amazing. It was like watching a beautiful dance. I was totally mesmerised!

そして何が起こったかをお話しましょう。その夜の指揮者は何かの理由で来れなくなったので、急遽、代理の指揮者が登場することになりました。オーマイゴッド。まるでライジングスターのようでした！（ああ、でも彼はそうなんです。２００８年のドナテラフリック指揮コンペティションで優勝していますから）デイビッド・アフカム。２７歳でロンドンシンフォニーオーケストラのアシスタントコンダクターを務めています。長身でスレンダー、エレガントで凄い！まるで優雅なダンスを見ているようでした。もうすっかり魅了されました！




And this face? How can you say no to this sweet face? lol Young, talented and handsome conductors... they are what the classic industry needs right now, and it seems that LA Phil. is really working on it. However, there is something that bothers me a lot. After attending several classical music concerts in SoCal I have noticed that the audience always applauds between the movements. It is just so strange! I have never seen such thing in New York, Japan or Europe. At this very concert, too, many people applauded every time each movement ended. You are not supposed to applaud between the movements. YOU JUST DO NOT CLAP BETWEEN THE MOVEMENTS.

The pause between the movements should be silent for some reasons: it is a time to reflect. The pause is part of the music. There is a whole flow including all the movements and pauses. Therefore, clapping between the movements breaks the flow, so you must stay silent. As an artist who makes books, it is like a reader applauds before turning every single page rather than clapping at the end of the whole story. How annoying is that!?

David Afkham just ignored the clapping audience between the movements, and did his thing. I have seen a conductor turning towards the clapping audience between the movements with a bitter smile and bowing. That is way too nice, I thought. I know how annoying it is for the music players, especially the conductors who are trying to focus between the movements. However, this is something the suffering classical music industry has to deal with in order to attract more audience. At least they've got young and hot conductors like Dudamel and Afhkam, and I am certain that there will be more!

それにこのルックス！こんなスイートな顔に「ノー」と言える人なんていないはず！笑　若くてカッコいい才能あるキャラクターたちが必要なクラシック音楽界。LAフィルはちゃんとそれをしているようですね。でも、ひとつ南カリフォルニアのクラシックコンサートで気付いたことがあるんです。オーディエンスが、楽章の間に拍手するんですよ！信じられない。南カリフォルニアで数回以上、クラシック音楽のコンサートに行きましたが、みんな楽章の間に拍手するんです。ワーワーっ！と感嘆の声を上げる人もいます。こんなことはニューヨークや東京、ヨーロッパでは見たことありません。拍手はすべての楽章が終わってからするものであって、間（ポーズ）ではするべきでないのです！

楽章の間で拍手をしないのには理由があります。このポーズ（間）では、演奏する側も聴く側もが、いろいろと感じたりしながらリフレクトする大切な時間なのです。特に演奏者や指揮者は、次の楽章への準備の瞬間でもある。そんな時にワーワーと言われたくないものなのです。コンポーザーとしても、全体のフローが崩れ、嫌なものです。絵描きの私として説明すれば、自分が作った絵本を誰が読んでいて、１ページごとに拍手をするようなもの。なんて厄介な！

デイビッド・アフカムは、いちいち拍手する観客を無視して、淡々と指揮を続けていましたが、私が過去見た経験では、楽章と楽章の間で拍手する観客に対して、苦笑いをしながらオーディエンスの方をちらっと向いて会釈をする指揮者もいました。それは親切というか、親切すぎるというか、、。演奏者と指揮者にとって、この有り難迷惑な拍手は集中の邪魔にもなるし、本当に困ったものですネ、、。
でも、これが今死にかけているクラシック音楽産業にとっては文句も言えない状況なのかも知れません、、。少なくとも、デュダメルやアフカムのような若くてかっこいいヤングたちがいるし、今後もいっぱい新星が誕生して来ることでしょう！

The Opening was fun! 楽しいオープニングでした！

The opening of my exhibition, "Save the Himalaya" at Tagore Gallery in Beverly Hills on April 29 was a lot of fun! Many people came, and I was so happy to see the familiar faces and many new faces! The gallery was packed from 6pm to 9pm. Thank you all for coming! I will post photos and write more about it soon :)

４月２９日のビバリーヒルズでの個展オープニングは楽しかったです。沢山が来てくださり、ギャラリーは６時から９時過ぎまで満員でした！多くの友人たちの顔、そして初めてお会いする人たちがたくさんで嬉しかったです。皆さん、どうもありがとうございました！またすぐ写真などと共にご報告しますネ。

The Opening Night Highlight オープニングの夜ハイライト

The opening of my exhibition "Save the Himalaya" was so much fun! So many people came, and the gallery was full from 6pm to 9pm continuously. Not knowing many people in LA area I was so happy to see this great turn out. Around 7:30pm I made a short speech thanking everyone to attend, and introducing my special guest speakers. Also I explained about Books for Children, my organization that I had established over 10 years ago. All proceed from the art sales will go helping the Tibetan refugee children's education on the Himalayan environment.



個展のオープニングは楽しかったです！６時から９時までギャラリーは満員でした。LA近辺に知り合いが少ない私にとっては驚きでもありましたが、とても嬉しいことでした。７時半頃に私は簡単なスピーチをしました。来てくださった皆さんにお礼の言葉。そしてこの夜のスペシャルゲストの紹介。あとは１０年以上前に設立した「ブックスフォーチルドレン」について。この個展の売り上げ全ては、チベット難民孤児のヒマラヤ環境教育に当てます。



My darling husband has been so supportive with my work! He understands the importance of children's education and my passion for Tibet.

私の旦那さんは私の仕事に対してとても協力的です。子供の教育の重要さや私のチベットへの情熱を理解してくれているからでしょう。




One of my special guest speakers, Tendor, the executive director of SFT and I both offered Khata (Tibetan white scarf) to each other at the same time. What a funny moment that was!

この夜のスペシャルゲストスピーカーのひとり、SFTのエグゼクティブディレクターのテンドードルジェと私は同時にカタ（チベットの白いスカーフ）を取り出して、笑える瞬間でした。



Legsang Nuba played the damyen (Tibetan traditional instrument) and sang some songs. He was really wonderful! His friend held the music for him since we did not have the music stand.

レグサン・ヌバ君は、ダムエン（チベットの民族楽器）を演奏し歌ってくれました。素晴らしかったです！スタンドが無かったので、彼の友人が歌詞を書いた紙を横で持ってくれました。




My other special guest was Dr. Commins, a professor from UCLA specialized in urban planning. He worked in Bangladesh for some years, and he always felt a deep connection with Rabindaneth Tagore's work. He read one of his beautiful poems that relates the environmental destruction.





もうひとりのスペシャルゲストは、カリフォルニア大学教授のカミング博士でした。アーバンプラニングのエキスパートである 彼は、バングラディッシュで数年仕事をしたそうです。タゴールギャラリーのオーナー、スンダラムの先祖でもあるノーベル賞受賞者ラビンンダナスタゴールの 有名な詩を朗読して下さいました。環境破壊がテーマの詩でしたが、タゴールの詩は美しい。



Mr. Lobsang Nyandak, the representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama was my guest of honor. He flew in to speak at my event from New York, and he gave a very generous speech about my work and the urgency of the Himalayan environmental crisis.



私のゲストオブオナーは、ダライラマ法王のアメリカ代表であるロブサンニャンダック氏でした。彼はこのイベントに参加するためにニューヨークから来てくださいました。私の活動について褒めて下さり、ヒマラヤ環境破壊についての危機についてお話してくださいました。



I was touched that many people had driven from San Diego to attend my opening because the traffic is awful on Friday night. Some even drove back after the opening. That is lots of driving...
However, according to the Californians this is absolutely normal!

サンディエゴからも多くの人たちが来てくれました。皆、車を運転して来たのです。中にはオープニングの後にまた運転して戻る人も沢山いました。金曜日の夜のトラフィックは酷いので、皆に感謝。でも彼らに言わせれば、西海岸ではこんなの当たり前なんだそうです。



There were so many people whom I could not talk to... although I tried to meet as many as possible. There were just so many people, and I wish I had more time to meet everyone!



とにかく沢山の人たちが来てくださって、皆さんとお話することができませんでした。お会いしたことない人たちともお話したかったのですが、とにかく時間が足りませんでした。


It was such fun opening, indeed! Yet, there were so much preparation, and everyone at the gallery worked so hard. Joe and Brad, the art consultants, Andrew and two lovely interns, Jessica and Erika helped me a lot at the opening. I thank everyone for this wonderful night!

本当に楽しい一夜でした。でも準備も色々とたいへんでギャラリーの皆が一生懸命でした。アートコンサルタントのジョーとブラッド。アンドリュー、そしてラブリーなインターンのジェシカとエリカ。皆の協力のおかげです。本当にどうもありがとう！
