The Opening on April 29 ４月２９日のオープニング

As I am leaving for LA for my exhibition opening at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Beverly Hills I'd like to talk a little about this special event. Sundaram (photo above) and I met many years ago in New York at the Christie's Auction House. Later we were introduced by our mutual friend, Dr. Robert Thurman, a professor at Columbia University. My first impression of Sundaram was a very smart gentleman. Since the late 80's in the New York art word I've dealt with many art dealers including some blue chip dealers. Sadly many of them were so unpleasant to work with... some exploited artists, and among us, the artists, they were called monsters! However, Sundaram was outstandingly different. He was always sincere and honest. I had never met an art dealer like him before, and I really think that he is a true gentleman.

もうすぐLAに発つ前に、少しビバリーヒルズのタゴールギャラリーでのオープニングについてお話したいと思います。スンダラム（上の写真）と最初に出会ったのは、もう何年も前のこと。ニューヨークのクリスティーズオークションハウスでのことでした。後に、共通の友人、ロバートサーマン教授（女優ウマのパパ）から紹介されたのです。スンダラムの最初の印象は、とっても聡明なジェントルマンでした。私は８０年代の後半からニューヨークのアートの世界で、あらゆる画商たちとやりとりして来ましたが、正直言って、嫌な体験を沢山しました。残念ながら、アーティストを獲物にするような画商が沢山いて、私たちアーティストの間では、彼らを「獣」と呼んでいたくらいです。でも、スンダラムはびっくりするほど違いました。正直で誠実。彼のような画商に出会ったことなかったので、本当に驚きました。彼は本当に紳士なのだと思います。




Rabindranath Tagore, one of my favorite poets and great writers, is Sundaram's ancestor. He was more than a writer - a great thinker and a Renaissance man, and was the first Asian person to receive a Nobel Prize in the history.

尊敬する素晴らしい詩人、文豪として知られているラビンドラナス・タゴールは、スンダラムの先祖にあたります。ラビンドラナスは作家だけでなく、秀でた思想家でもありルネッサンスマンでした。ガンジーの側近としても知られ、アジア人として最初にノーベル賞を受賞した凄い人でもあります。



The honorary guest at my opening event is Mr. Lobsang Nyandak who is a dear friend of mine. I am always so impressed by his calmness. As a chief representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the Americas he is constantly under a lot of pressure and demands. However, I have never seen him lose his temper. It is quite amazing! As an emotional artist myself he seems like a Tibetan James Bond!

オープニングの名誉ゲストは、私の親しい友人でもある、ダライラマ法王のアメリカ代表、ニャンダック氏です。私は彼の冷静さにいつも脱帽しています。彼のポストは、ものすごいプレッシャーと要求だらけの日々です。にも関わらず、私は彼が取り乱したり、キレたり、声を上げたりしたことを一度も見たことがありません。どんな状況でも、いつもクールでパッパっと判断を下し、行動する。感情的なアーティストの私にとっては、彼はまるでチベット版ジェイムスボンドのよう！



Dr. Stephen Commins is a professor at UCLA, and he specializes in urban planning. He was introduced to me through my dear friend, Diana Takata who used to be his student at UCLA. Since my exhibition is a benefit event (Sundaram and I are donating all proceed to educating the Tibetan refugee children in exile about the environment) he kindly offered me to speak for free. As he is a very known professor I was deeply moved by his generosity! I cannot wait to hear him talk on the Himalayan environmental crisis.

ステファンカミンズ博士は、カリフォルニア大学の教授です。私の友人ダイアナ・タカタがかつて彼のもとで勉強していたこともあり、紹介していただきました。この展覧会はチャリティでもあるということで（私とスンダラムは絵の売り上げを全部チベット難民孤児たちへ寄付します）ギャラ無しでスピーチして下さるというのです。なんて優しい！彼は有名な教授なので、感動しました。ヒマラヤの環境についてお話をして下さるとのことですが、とても楽しみです！



Tendor Dorjee is a very special friend to me, and he is the executive director of SFT (Students for a Free Tibet.) When I first met him many years ago at the SFT office in New York he had just graduated from Brown University, and he was so quiet and did not say a thing to me. Now he is a "jet-set-activist" that he is always traveling around the world. He leads rallies around the world for a Free Tibet, and he teaches non-violent strategies to raise young activists. Tendor climbed the Everest as a protest, and he has been arrested many times raising his voice for his country. He's been interviewed by many international media. He is a hard working, incredible man who inspired us all.

テンドードルジェは私の特別の親友でもあります。彼はSFT（スチューデントフォーアフリーチベット）のエグゼキュティブディレクター。何年も前にSFTのオフィスで出会った頃は、彼はブラウン大学から卒業したばかりで、静かでシャイで私に一言も話しませんでした。そんな彼は、今日は「ジェットセット運動家」です。世界中を飛び回り、ラリーを開催し、チベットのために非暴力的な運動の仕方を教えて廻っています。テンドーはエベレストにも登ってラリーをしました。各国で「フリーチベット！」と声を上げては逮捕され、世界中のメディアでもひっぱりだこ。ハードワーキングで私たちのインスピレーション的存在です。



We also have Legsang Nuba who will perform damyen (Tibetan guitar), and I am sorry that I don't have his photo.
And, of course, we are expecting to have more special guests.... yes, it is you! I look forward to seeing you there, and thank you for coming!

A Surprise Welcome in LA サプライズウエルカム

My husband and I rented this big boy to bring my art work to Beverly Hills. Did I mention that we had never driven to LA before? This 15-passenger-cargo van was enormous, and it shook as we drove. Since I am terrified to drive the LA highway my husband had to drive all the way. Due to the Easter Sunday traffic it took us almost 4 hours to reach LA from San Diego, and we were exhausted. After dropping off my art at Tagore Gallery in Beverly Hills we had to drive again to attend the black tie gala party that I was invited by the prestigious Nepalese organization. We were running late, and missed the cocktail reception. When I got there I had to change into a evening dress in 2 minuets and run to the gala, and I did not even have time to do my hair!

ビバリーヒルズのギャラリーまで絵を運ぶために、この巨大なカーゴバンをレンタルしました。私と旦那さん、まだLAまで運転したことなかったんですよ！この１５人乗りバンはホントに大きくて運転するとユラユラと左右に揺れるんです。まだLAのハイウエイ運転が怖い私、、なので、旦那さんが全部運転するはめに、、！イースターサンデイ（復活祭の日曜日）だったため、ひどい渋滞で、２時間で着くはずが４時間かかってしまい、もう私たちはぐったり。タゴールギャラリーに絵を納品した後、私たちはすぐに、ブラックタイガラパーティに出席するため、また運転を始めました。このフォーマルのガラパーティは、ネパールのエリートたちの団体が主催で、なぜか私が招待されていたのです。道が混んでいて、カクテルレセプションにも間に合わず、ホテルに着いた私は２分でイブニングドレスに着替え、パーティの会場まで走って行きました。髪をまとめる時間も無し！



When I arrived at the gala I was escorted to the table on the stage. I did not understand it. I was just one of the attending guests, I thought, and I was going to sit in the corner and stay low-key because I was exhausted and not dressed well enough. Yet, I was wrong. For some reason I was the guest of honor, and was to sit right next to His Excellency Mr. Acharya from the Nepalese Embassy! I felt terrible that I was late...! There were about 100 distinguished guests in black ties and the beautiful saris.

パーティ会場に着くと、「リマさんですね。こちらへどうぞ」と丁重にエスコートされたのが、ステージの上のテーブル。あれれ？なんと、私は「ゲスト　オブ　オナー」（名誉のゲスト）だったのです。（またなぜ私が、、？）ひどく疲れていたし、きちんとドレスアップする時間もなかったので、パーティの片隅でひっそりとしていようと思っていたのに、ステージの上、しかも、ネパール大使の隣なんて、、。あ〜遅刻してしまって、本当に申し訳ありません！
会場にはタキシードや美しいサリーを着たゲストが１００人程出席していました。



Then the MC kindly made a wonderful introduction of me, and I made a brief speech about my great interest in Nepal, the Himalayan environmental crisis and my exhibition event on April 29. I was not prepared, but rather than worrying about it I tried to focus on the message itself and being sincere about what I say.
It is funny - when I lived in NYC for 32 years I never met one single Nepalese person there. Now I was welcomed by so many wonderful Nepalese professionals here in SoCal in such a grand manner. As I was making a spontaneous speech I thought to myself, "Life is full of surprises..." because Nepal has been on the very top of my list of the countries that I want to visit for so many years now - it's one of the major Himalayan countries.


MCの方が素晴らしい私のイントロダクションをして下さいました。私はネパールへの深い興味や、ヒマラヤの環境危機、そして４月２９日から始まる個展についてを話しました。準備してなかったスピーチのことを心配するよりも、メッセージを伝えること、そして誠意を込めて話すことに集中しました。
おかしなもので、３２年も住んだNYではひとりもネパール人と出会ったことがなかったのに、南カリフォルニアに来て、こんなに立派なネパールのエリートたちから温かく迎えていただいたことを、不思議に、そして嬉しく思いました。「人生はビックリすることが一杯、、」と、スピーチをしながら、つくづく感じていた私です。もう長年にわたってネパールは訪れてみたい国です。ヒマラヤを代表する国のひとつですから、、。

Coloring Mandala Project 曼荼羅塗り絵プロジェクト

For my exhibition, "Save the Himalaya" that opens on April 29 at Tagore Gallery in Beverly Hills I created this mandala drawing. It's a mandala of compassion (Om Mani Padme Hum), and I drew only the base outline. I divided into small sections which are priced in the range from $1 to $100. You buy the section(s) you like, and color it with the indicated color such as orange, red, blue, green and yellow. It is a coloring project to raise funds to send my new book, "Save the Himalaya" to 82 Tibetan refugee schools in exile.

４月２９日からビバリーヒルズのタゴールギャラリーで始まる個展のために、この曼荼羅を描きました。これは慈悲の曼荼羅（オーマニペメフム）で、線で下書きだけをしました。曼荼羅を小さなセクションに区切って、それぞれの部分に価格を記してあります。１ドルから１００ドルまで。好きな部分を買って、指定された色でそこを塗っていただくという、ファンドレイズのプロジェクトです。集めた資金は、私の新しい絵本「Save the Himalaya」をインドにある８２校のチベット難民学校へ贈るために当てられます。



I got this incredible idea of coloring mandala in my dream many years ago, and I have done the fund raise with this idea twice before. Once we raised $4000 from one mandala. The idea is to not just donate money, but participate in creating a beautiful mandala together. The feeling of experience is powerful, and it usually stays within you for a long time. I find it very important in fund raising. I want to make sure that everyone can participate - so I price the sections from $1 up to $100, so that a small child may be able to spend his/her precious dollar!

この素晴らしい塗り絵の案は、何年も前に夢の中で得たものでした。後、２回ほどこの「曼荼羅塗り絵プロジェクト〜みんなの大きな絵〜」をして、ひとつの曼荼羅から４０万円ほど寄付を集めることができたこともありました。ポイントは、ただ寄付金を出すだけでなく、人々が参加して（絵に色を塗るという）皆で作る、、ということです。経験をすることは、ただお金を出すことよりもずっと深く心に残るものです。そうやって誰かを想う気持ち、他人の幸せを祈る気持ちを感じるツールになれば、、と思ったのです。これはファンドレイズをするにあたって、とても重要な要素だといつも感じています。また、セクションも１ドルから始めました。これだったら、貴重な１ドルを持っている小さな子供でも参加できますから！




Those colorful pillows were kindly made by my Tibetan friend, Lektsay in San Diego. He is a master of the Tibetan Thangka, so for him, sewing seems to be a cup of tea. However, he volunteered to do it for the project... how nice of him! The mandala and the pillows will be at the gallery, so when you visit there remember to participate :)

このカラフルなクッションは、サンディエゴに住むチベタンの友人に作ってもらいました。彼はタンカ（チベットの仏画）のマスターでもあるので、このくらいの縫い物はオチャノコサイサイらしいのです。でも、このプロジェクトにボランティア参加してくれた彼、優しいですネ。この曼荼羅とクッションは、ギャラリーに配置されますので、いらして下さった皆さん、是非、ご参加下さい。


This is the real sand mandala, and it was created by the Namgyal Monastery monks in New York some years ago. This takes days and days to create. Often the monks wear masks to prevent from destroying the mandala if they sneeze. I once had an amazing opportunity to invite the Nechung monks from Dharamsala to create a sand mandala at my exhibition at Isetan in Tokyo. The CEO that time, late Mr. Motoh who was my dear friend accepted my request to invite them to create a huge mandala at Isetan Art Gallery where my exhibition was held. Mr. Mutoh was a devoted Buddhist, and he used to admire and respect the Dalai Lama. It was not easy to bring the monks from India to Tokyo just to create a mandala..., but now it is only a wonderful and precious memory! Needless to say that the mandala was incredibly beautiful!

これは本物の砂曼荼羅です。ニューヨークのナムギャル寺院のチベタンお坊さんたちが数年前に作ったものです。これは何日も何日もかかるのですよ、、。たいていお坊さんたちはマスクをして制作します。くしゃみした時に、砂が飛び散らないように。

私は２０００年に新宿伊勢丹で「１０周年記念個展」を開催した時に、伊勢丹会長で親しい友人でもあった故、武藤社長にお願いして、インドはダラムサラからネチュン寺院のチベット人のお坊さんたちをお呼びして、私の個展会場で砂曼荼羅を作っていただいたのでした。武藤社長は真面目な仏教徒でした。ダライラマ法王を大尊敬していたこともあり、私たちは会うといつも仏教の哲学について語り合ったものです、、。インドからチベットのお坊さんを招待するということは、容易なことではありませんでした。いろいろたいへんでしたが、今は貴重な思い出ばかり。曼荼羅が素晴らしかったことは言うまでもありません！



Mandala is an offering to the universe, deities, all sentient beings and the world. The monks spend days after days to create it, and at the end they destroy is in a second. Impermanence.

曼荼羅はもともと、宇宙、天、神々、生きるものすべて、そして世界へのお供えを意味しています。ですから、何日もかけて作った曼荼羅は最後に一瞬にして破壊するのです。永遠のものは何も無し。



Those Tibetan monks were so sweet and kind. One day I decided to cook dinner for them, and I was asked to make a Tibetan dish. I made this special Tibetan dish that I had learn from a Tibetan monk in Dharamsala, India. I was so proud that I knew how to make a Tibetan dish, and was certain that they would like it. I served them the dinner, and the monks were eating my dish quietly. Suddenly one monk said to me, "Rima la. This is wonderful. Is this Japanese?" lol

このナムギャル寺院のお坊さんたちは、本当に優しくて温かいんです。ある日、彼らのためにディナーを作ることにした私。チベット料理を作ってあげて下さいというリクエストに応じて、かつてダラムサラでチベット僧侶から教えていただいたチベット料理の一品を作りました。チベット料理を作れることを自慢げに思っていた私です。きっとお坊さんたちも喜んでくれるに違いない、、。そう確信しながらディナーをサーブしました。静かに食事を始めたお坊さんたち。すると突然ひとりのお坊さんが私に言ったんです。「リマさん。美味しい。これは日本食ですか？」と。笑

The Future of Medicine 医学の未来

Last night I had a rare opportunity to be invited to hear Dr. William Brody talk, the president of Salk Institute that is a renowned scientific research center in La Jolla. As an artist I have been always curious about Salk Institute because of its architecture which was designed by Louise Khan. (photo above.) A movie producer friend of mine in New York made a documentary film on him called, "My Architect," and also Louise Khan used to live near my husband's family in Philladelphia. Dr. Brody used to be the president of Johns Hopkins University for many years. I have made a book and a calender on tuberculosis that was partially funded by Johns Hopkins Hospital, so I felt a connection there.

昨夜は、ラホーヤにある世界的に有名な科学リサーチセンター、ソーク研究所の社長であるウイリアムブロディ博士のお話を聞く、、という滅多にないご招待を受けるという機会に恵まれました。アーティストとして、このソーク研究所にはずっと興味を抱いていた私です。なぜなら、かの建築家ルイーズカーンがデザインした建物で知られているからです。私のNYの映画プロデューサーの友人が「マイアーキテクト」というカーン氏のドキュメンタリー映画を作りました。また、私の旦那さんの家族はかつて、フィラデルフィアでカーン氏の家の近くに住んでいたのです。ブロディ博士は長年にわたりジョンズホプキンス大学病院の社長でもありました。ジョンズホプキンス大学の一部協力で、結核の絵本やカレンダーを作った私は、なんだか縁を感じていたのです。




The discussion on the future medicine had two other guest speakers. Dr.Eric Topol, the CAO of Scripps Healthcare and Dr. Jay Flatley, the CEO of Illumina which is one of the fastest growing bio-tech companies in the world. Three of them talked about where the future bio science and its technology are leading us. They talked about genome. They talked about personalized medicine. They talked about having your heart rate data icon on your iphone! It was so fascinating even though I did not understand many things they were talking about (there were so many technical terms that I had never heard of!)

「未来の医学」ディスカッションには、他の２人のゲストがいました。スクリプスヘルスケア（カリフォルニアトップの病院）のヘッドであるトーポル博士、そして今世界で話題になっているバイオテック会社イルミナの会長フラットレー博士。彼らは未来のバイオサイエンスとそのテクノロジーについて語ってくれました。遺伝子ゲノムについて。個人のニーズに合わせた薬ができてくることについて。そしてiPhoneのスクリーンに、自分の心臓呼吸のデータを表示するシステムについて！どれもが興味深い内容ばかりでした。（難しい言葉がいっぱいあったけど）



Yet, it was so inspiring. I have always been an artist who is inspired by non-artists. I enjoy meeting people who are totally different from me. However, I always find creativity in their work, and that is the beauty of it. Science and Art. They have been the eternal magical combination for centuries after all.

本当に面白い一夜でした。私は、アーティストでない人たちからインスピレーションを受けるアーティストのタイプです。自分とは全く異なった職業の人たちに興味を持つんです。でも、どんな仕事やキャリアであれ、かならずクリエイティビティがそこにある。それが素晴らしいんですね。科学と芸術。これは歴史上においても長い間ずっと、永遠の魔法のコンビなのです。

The SoCal Eco & Ego 南カリフォルニアのエコ＆エゴ

I see it everywhere - people in T-shirts and shorts sitting at outdoor restaurants under the propane heaters. Although I love living in SoCal this is one thing I detest. People here are in denial. They don't want to accept the fact that even SoCal gets cold once in a while. SoCal people don't carry their jackets or sweaters, and even if they did they would not wear them. They rather sit under the propane gas heater in their tank tops and shorts, and I find it totally pathetic!



南カリフォルニアでは、このような人たちがどこにもいます。Tシャツに短パンでプロペンヒーターの下で食事。私はカリフォルニアでの生活が大好きですが、これだけは理解できない。南カリフォルニアの人たちは、ここでさえたまには寒くなることを認めたくないのです。ジャケットやセーターを持ち歩こうとしないし、持っていたとしても着ずに、タンクトップや短パンのままヒーターの下に座る。なんて情けなくて傲慢な！



If it's cold outside we should simply put on the jackets or sweaters and not eat outside. However, that is not how it is here in SoCal. See the giant heater (photo below)? This is everywhere, and people expect them to be there. They feel entitled to eat outside without jackets or sweaters. I find it so egoistic.



外が寒ければジャケットやセーターを着る。それが自然だと思うのですが、ここ南カリフォルニアでは違います。どこに行っても、この上の写真のように、巨大なヒーターが設置されていて、人々もそれを当然と思っています。ジャケットやセーターを着なくていい、、ということを、まるで権利のように思っているのでしょうか。



It's been said that propane gas is harmless to the environment. Maybe so, but it is still waste of energy, and I really think that the Californians have established a bad habit for many years. "Go inside if it is too cold to eat outside. Or bundle up and go outside. Don't waste energy just because you want to stay in your T-shirts and shorts to pretend that it is warm outside!" I am shouting.

プロペインガスは環境に害が無いと言われていますが、そうだとしても、エナジーの無駄には違いありません。カリフォルニア市民は、長年に亘り、この良くない習慣を築き上げてしまったようです、、。「外が寒ければ中で食事。外に行きたければジャケットを着ましょう。ただいつもTシャツと短パンでいたいからといってエネジーを無駄使いするのは止めましょう！」と叫びたい私です。



To have a dinner in the nature like this once in a while (photo above) may be romantic and lovely, but is it really worth it? Can you at least bundle up and stop pretending it is not cold outside?

The state of California is supposed to be the biggest state on hybrid cars. According to the regional data of hybrid cars California is number one followed by Floria, Texas, New York, Virginia, Illinois, Washington, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, but I do not see many hybrid cars here in SoCal, and I used to see many more in New York. Perhaps it's because not every hybrid car indicates that it is hybrid. In any case, I'd like to believe that the Californian are green conscious as I was told. However, this outdoor dining obsession is not cool at all.

The restaurant owner near my house once told me that they spent so much money for the propane gas every month. They hate it, but if they don't have heaters outside the customers would not come. He also told me that the customers don't like to wear jackets or sweaters outside. I definitely call it the California ego.

たまに自然の中で食事も良いかも知れませんが（上の写真）ここまでする価値あるのでしょうか？少なくとも、外は寒くないなんて誤摩化さずにジャケットを着てほしいなあ。

統計によるとカリフォルニアは、ハイブリッドカーが一番多い州だそうです。その次にフロリダ、テキサス、ニューヨーク、イリノイ、ワシントン、ペンシルバニア、マサーチューセッツ、ニュージャージー、、、と続きます。私が見ている限り、ニューヨークほどハイブリッドカーが目につかないのですが、すべてのハイブリッドカーが、私の車のように「ハイブリッド」と表示されているわけでないの、ただ気付かないだけかも知れません。いずれにせよ、話に聞いていたように、カリフォルニア市民はエココンシャスだということを信じたいです。それにしても野外での食事に対するオブセッションはよろしくない、、。

私の家の近くのレストランオーナーの話によると、彼は毎月、アウトドアヒーター用のプロペインガスに多額を払っているそうです。彼いわく「バカらしい。でも、アウトドアダイニングを提供しないとお客が来ないのよ。ちょっと肌寒いとジャケット持っててても着たがらない。このヒーターが無いと客が減ってしまうんだ。」
まさに「カリフォルニアエゴ」ですね。

Bang, bang, bangs! 前髪！

Today I'd like to talk about my bangs. Many have told me that it's too short. My mom, my dad and my husband say they are too short.., but I like them that way! When my bangs are long they bother me so much, so I want to keep them above my eyebrows. This photo above is my dear friend in Paris and me. Her hair is short and so are her bangs. Nobody tells her that her bangs are too short. It is not fair!

今日は私の前髪について書きたいと思います。皆さんが私の前髪が短いと思っているのはよく知っています。ネットでからかわれているのも知ってますよ！母も父も旦那さんも皆、短いと言います。でも、この長さが好きなんです！前髪が長いとなんとなくうっとうしくて。だからすっきりりと眉毛の上が好き。この上の写真は、私の巴里の親友とのショット。彼女の髪は短くて前髪も短いのに、誰も彼女には「前髪が短い」と言わない。これって不公平！笑



Look at this beautiful Yanomami girl with short bangs. People often called me, "Yanomami bangs," and I took it as a compliment, and thank you very much!

このヤノマミ族の美しい少女の短い前髪を見て下さい。よく私は「ヤノマミみたい」と言われました。でも、私は褒め言葉として受け取ってますよ〜笑



One day I was enjoying my lunch at a cafe, and again someone asked me, "Why are your bangs so short?"and totally spoiled my lunch!

この間も、カフェでランチを楽しんでいたら、誰かが「なぜ前髪がそんなに短いの？」と聞いてきました。まったく〜。ランチ台無し。笑



Betty Page had short bangs. It was her trademark. I personally think that she would have been much sexier if her bangs were longer, but I guess that she liked them short, too...

短い前髪で有名な人にベティペイジがいますね。あの前髪は彼女のトレードマークでもありました。私は個人的に、もっと彼女の前髪が長かったらもっとセクシーだったろうなと思います。でも彼女もきっと短い前髪が好きだったのネ。




Those bangs are hard to figure out. I am not sure if they are long or short since I don't know if those dolls even have eyebrows. Anyway, they look good to me...

このお人形さんの前髪は謎です。なぜならこのお人形さんに眉毛が存在するのかしないのか分からないのですもんネ。眉毛の上なのか下なのか？いずれにせよ、可愛いですね、、。



The ultimate short bangs belong to Dr. Zaius from the "Planet of the Apes." His bangs are the classic bobbed and very stylish! (?) And... I have one bad news for you. A few months ago I completely changed my hair style, and I no longer have my signature short bangs. Those days are over, and I feel sad about it, but I had to make that decision to keep my hair healthy. I used to straighten my hair every year for 15 years that is really bad for it, so I finally decided to take advantage of my naturally wavy hair. Now I have very long bangs. Are you happy now?

そして最後、、。究極の短い前髪は、「猿の惑星」のドクターゼウス。彼の前髪はクラシックなボブでなんともスタイリッシュだこと！（？）でもここで残念なお知らせが一つ。何ヶ月か前に、私はヘアスタイルをがらっと変えてしまったのです。もう私のシグネチャー前髪もありまえせん。もうあの日々は終わってしまった。ちょっと寂しいけれど、髪の毛を健康に保つためには仕方無かったのです、、。私は１５年以上ストレートパーマをかけてきました。すごく髪に悪いと医者から指摘され、生まれつきのウエイビーヘアーを生かす髪型に変えたんです。なので、もうあの短い前髪は無し。ほっとしましたか、皆さん？笑

Deer Park ディアパーク

We visited Deer Park Monastery in Escondido. It is a Buddhist practice center in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hahn, a renowned Vietnamese monk who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He is based in France, but his teaching centers are all over the world. We drove up in the mountains where this lovely monastery had been built. The land was so beautiful filled with colorful flowers and lush trees. At the main gate we luckily ran into a Vietnamese nun, and she kindly opened the gate for us. (We did not know that you need to make an appointment for a visit.)

エスカンディドにあるディアパークを訪れました。ここは１９６７年にノーベル平和賞にノミネートされた、かのベトナム人の仏教僧侶で平和運動家ティクナットハンのお寺です。彼は普段フランスに住んでいますが、世界中に彼のお寺があるのです。私たちは車で山の頂上まで登り、この美しいお寺に到着しました。運良く正門にベトナム人の尼さんがいたので門を開けてもらうことができました。（通常は訪問するのにアポがいることを知らなかったのです。）



The monastery was just lovely. There were nuns' houses, the main meditation room, dining room with a kitchen, and so on. It was so quiet, and all you could hear was the birds singing and some nun's prayer. We did not see anyone outside, so we kept looking for an office or something. Then I found the laundry area where all these nuns' aodai dresses were hang to dry.

お寺はチャーミングでした。尼さんたちの家、本堂、食堂にキッチン、、。とても静かで、聞こえてくるのは鳥の歌声と尼さんのお祈りの声だけ。外には誰もいないので、私たちは事務所か何かを探し続けました。すると洗濯場にたどり着いてしまった。そこには尼さんたちのアオザイが干してありました。



Something smelled really good, so I walked towards the aromatic air. It was another huge dining room, and I saw this cute little girl nun. She did not speak English well, but when I told her how lovely she was she smiled and said, "Thank you, but I am 22 years old!" My husband and I looked each other in a shock. This nun looked so young and adorable! It must be the healthy life, I thought...

何か良い臭いがして来ました。美味しそうな香につられて歩くと、そこは別の大きな食堂でした。可愛い少女の尼さんがいました。英語が上手く話せないようだったのですが、私が「なんて可愛い！」と言うと「ありがとう。でも私は２２歳なんです」と言ったのです！私と旦那さんは驚きのあまり、目を合わせたまま黙ってしまいました。ここでの健康な生活がミソなのでしょうか、、、



The nuns grow their own organic vegetables to eat. 尼さんたちは食べるためのオーガニック野菜も育てています。



"Be there for each other" and "Listen to each other" were written on everyone's house door.

「お互いのために存在しましょう」「お互いに相手を聞きましょう」という言葉が、皆の家のドアに貼ってありました。

これが尼さんたちの家。このような小さな家がお寺の敷地内に沢山あります。



The stained glass window of the Buddha image was so beautiful at the main auditorium.

Suddenly I felt like meditating under the tree... There is something very compelling to me every time I visit a monastery. I just don't want to leave, and want to stay there. I've always had a fantasy to become a nun up in the Himalayas. I still have that fantasy sometimes, and who knows, perhaps one day...

急に木の下で瞑想をしたくなりました。いつもお寺を訪れると帰りたくなくなるです。昔からヒマラヤの麓で尼さんになるファンタシーを持っている私です。未だにそのファンタシーがあるのですが、わかりませんね、、、もしかしたら、いつの日か、、。

Portrait series 肖像画シリーズ

Back in the 80's I used to paint many portraits. I had a tremendous interest in people and in their inner complexity, and I painted people around me, famous people I had adored such as Gandhi, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa and people I had seen in my dreams. After many years I've begun having this urge to paint portraits again, and when I was thinking about doing a portrait series once more I got a commission offer to do a portrait of Tak Matsumoto, the guitar player of the Japan's renowned rock duo, B'z, by a good friend of mine who wanted to give it to Tak as a gift. Tak had just won the Grammy award this year. "How timely," I thought. I was thrilled to do his portrait, yet the last time I met Tak in person was over 10 years ago. Normally I don't like to use photographs to paint portraits. So I really had to depend on my imagination!

My friend who commissioned me the painting told me about recent Tak- how he really loves his family and his children, and so on. As I heard about this old friend of mine all these images came down on me. The eastern angels and the western angels were floating all over me with lots and lots of colors. The vibrant mountains firmly stood there among the delicate pink clouds... I began painting right away - I did not have to wait for an image at all.

As I painted Tak all those memories about him came back to me. We first met about 25 years ago in New York, and we were so young. He was so charismatic, full of ambition that I was almost intimidated by him. Yet, I knew that there was a very delicate side of him which he never shared with anyone. In this portrait of Tak I wanted to express that very private side of him. The face he would keep very private and personal. Something very vulnerable and fragile... that every human being has. The process was so intriguing. As I painted Tak, I saw my friend who commissioned me this painting and I saw myself in it. We were all in there somehow, as one. I experienced this amazing sense of connection of human beings and the universe... or something larger than life.

８０年代にはよく肖像画を描きました。まわりの友人たちや尊敬した有名人たち（ガンジーやダライラマ法王、マザーテレサなど）。人間や人の奥深い複雑なものに興味を持っていたのです。あれから長い年月が経った今、また肖像画シリーズをしたいなあと思っていた矢先に、ある友人から肖像画の依頼を受けました。B’zのギター松本孝弘氏のポートレイト。松本さんはちょうど今年グラミー賞を受賞したところでした。「なんてタイムリーな、、」と私は思いました。でも、私が最後松本さんと会ったのは、もう１０年程前のこと。通常私は肖像画を描く時、あまり写真を使うのを好みません。なので今回は特に、イマジネーションに頼ったのです！

最近の松本さんがどんな感じなのかを聞きました。家族を大切にしていることなど、温かいイメージが伝わって来て、どんどんイメージが上から降りて来ました。東洋と西洋の天使たちがゆらゆらと飛び交い、様々な色彩が見えます。ゆるぎない山々の間にピンク色の優しい雲。すぐに制作にとりかかりました。アイディアやイメージを待つ必要は全く無しでした。

絵を描いている最中に、昔の思い出がよみがえって来ました。松本さんと最初に会ったのは約２５年前、ニューヨークでのことです。ものすごいカリスマ性と野心の持ち主で、怖いくらいでした。でも、人間なら誰でも持っている、何か傷つきやすくプライベートな部分を感じたのを思い出しました。私は、普段彼が人に見せない、そんな人間的な部分を表現したいと思ったのです。制作のプロセスも不思議でした。描いていると、あの頃の私たち、、松本さん、絵を依頼してくれた友人、私、まわりの友人たち、、の皆の顔が見えて来るのです。人間や宇宙との繋がり、、。人間よりも大きな何か、、を、ひしひしと感じながら完成した作品です。

Palm Springs パームスプリングス

It's the second day in Indian Wells, and we drove towards Palm Springs. We could see some snow mountains over palm trees, and it was just so surreal. The scenery reminds me so much of Ladakh except the palm trees. We drove for about 30 minuets, and saw this spectacular view of the snow mountains, palm trees and hundreds of wind power mills!

インディアンウエルズの２日目。今日はパームスプリングスまでドライブしました。雪山がヤシの木の後ろに聳えたっているのはなんともシュール。ヤシの木を除けば景色はラダック（北インド）にそっくり。私たちが３０分ほど運転していると、このスペクタキュラーな風景が目の前に広がりました！雪山にヤシの木、そして巨大な風力発電所！

Then, I could not believe my own eyes. I saw this snowy mountain behind me, and it looked just like Mt.Kailash in Tibet! Now I felt as if I were in Tibet, not Ladakh. I did not know where I was anymore... it was hard to believe I was in Palm Springs in California!

そして自分の目を疑いました。この私の後ろの雪山は、チベットの聖なる山、カイラス山にそっくりだったのです！今度はラダックでなくチベットにいる気分になりました。というか、自分がどこにいるのか分からなくなりました。ここがカリフォルニアだなんて、、！

After running around the desert I was craving for some desserts. We went to a famous Jewish deli in town, and had to choose a dessert... as there were so many sweets!

砂漠でウロチョロした後は、デザートが食べたくなりました。町中にある有名なジューイッシュデリに行き、沢山のチョイスからひとつ選んだのです、、、！

It took me a while to choose one, and this mille feuille won my attention. It was so big and tall. So tall and white like the Mt. Kailash. It was not easy to eat it. So we went wild.

デザートを選ぶのに時間がかかりましたが、このミルフィーユにしました。巨大で背も高かった。白くて高くて、まるでカイラス山のよう。食べるのが難しいミルフィーユ。私たちはワイルドに行きましたよ。

Are you telling me, "Oh, you have no manners!"? I would have gone to the hell of guilt if I ate the whole cream! Was it good? Well, it was certainly not a French quality, but really good. Plus, this was so "local" and so American. After all I was in Palm Springs, and not in Tibet... :)

「まあ、なんてお行儀の悪いこと！」と言っておられますか？このクリーム全部食べていたら、私はきっと罪悪感の地獄に落ちていたはず。お味はって？う〜ん、フランスのミルフィーユではなかったですが、美味しかったです。それに「ローカル」で「アメリカ」！という感じ。やっぱりここはチベットでなくパームスプリングスなのでした、、。笑

Indian Wells インディアンウエルズ

I arrived at this beautiful Spanish style villa in Indian Wells today. It is near Palm Spring, and it took about two hours by car from San Diego. We are staying here for a few days to take a look at the art galleries in the area.

今日、インディアンウエルズのこの美しいスペイン風のヴィラに到着しました。ここはパームスプリングから近いリゾートでサンディエゴから車で２時間くらいの砂漠地域にあります。私たちはここに３日程滞在しながら、アートギャラリーなどを見る予定。

The villa has a beautiful garden and the pool. The weather is perfect for me - 82F, sunny and dry!

The mountains, palm trees, the blue sky... and the strong desert Sun. It cannot be better!

ヴィラには素晴らしいお庭とプールがついています。気候も最高、、、８２F、晴れそしてドライ！山にヤシの木、青い空、、、そして強い砂漠の太陽。文句無し！

The landscape reminded me of Ladakh, the northern India. The yellow and purple desert flowers were everywhere, and it was so beautiful.

景色は北インドのラダックにそっくりでした。黄色や紫色の花々で一面に咲いていて綺麗です！

In the middle of the desert I craved for the seafood somehow... This is ridiculous because I can get one of the best seafood in San Diego, so why should I eat the seafood in Indian Wells? I don't know, but I ended up ordering the seafood paella and the crab cake! However, when you think about it what is really a desert food anyway? Everything is shipped from everywhere else, so it does not really matter. Perhaps tomorrow I will find out what is more "local" to eat. Will let you know!

砂漠のまっただ中にある町だというのに、なぜかシーフードが食べたくて、パエリアにクラブケイク（カニ）をオーダーしてしまいました。なんだかバカげていますよねえ、だって、サンディエゴでは美味しいシーフードを食べれるのに、わざわざここまで来てシーフードを食べなくたっていいのに。でも、よく考えてみれば、ここにはあちこちから輸送されて来る食材しかないのです。だから逆に何でも良いということ！明日は何が「ローカル」なのか調べてみよう。また報告しますね！

Exhibition Opening "Save the Himalaya" on April 29 個展オープニングは４月２９日

The opening of my exhibition, "Save the Himalaya" will be on Friday, April 29 from 6 - 9pm at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. The exhibition will be up until May 22.
We will have some special guests: the chef rep. of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dr. Stephen Commins from UCLA and Tendor Dorjee from SFT, New York...! Legsang Nuba will play damyen (a traditional Tibetan instrument), and we will have some delicious Tibetan momos (traditional dumplings).

The original drawings from my newest book, "Save the Himalaya" (forewords by the Dalai Lama and Richard Gere) will be exhibited with other recent works, and I am donating all proceed towards educating the Tibetan refugee children in exile about the environmental crisis. It will be a great event, and I am so excited! So, save the date! Join us and enjoy this wonderful exhibit for a great cause!

私の個展『Save the Himalaya』のオープニングは、４月２９日（金）午後６時から９時です。場所はビバリーヒルズのスンダラム・タゴールギャラリー。個展は５月２２日まで。オープニングには、ダライラマ法王のアメリカ代表、UCLAの教授コミンズ氏、そしてSFT代表のテンドー・ドルジェ氏などがゲストスピーカーとして来て下さいます。レグサン・ヌバ氏によるダムエン（チベットの伝統楽器）の演奏や、チベット餃子のアペタイザーなども！

展示するのは、秋に出版される絵本『Save the Himalaya』（序文：ダライラマ法王とリチャードギア）の原画と、その他の作品。売り上げは全て、絵本を贈る資金とチベット難民孤児や子供たちの環境についての教育のために当てます。素晴らしいイベントになると思いますので、是非、南カリフォルニア、ロスアンジェルス近辺の皆さん、いらして下さい！
