Wonders of the Monument Valley モニュメントヴァレーの不思議

We got up at 4:45AM to see the sunrise. It was still dark outside, and I could see the moon over the rocks. The gate was still closed before 5AM, but all of a sudden a worker showed up in his pick up truck, and he opened the gate for us. We were so lucky. It was chilly and silent. We sat, and watched the sunrise for about an hour. Needless to say that every minute was magical!

明け方４時４５分に起きて日の出を見に行きました。外はまだ真っ暗で、岩の真上に月が見えました。岩の近くに行くゲイトはまだ閉まっていたのですが、５時頃に、ふとピックアップトラックに乗った従業員さんが現れて、ゲイトを開けてくれたのです。なんとも幸運でした。辺りは寒くて静か。私たちは座って１時間程サンライズを見ました。どの瞬間も魔法のようだったことは言うまでもありません！




Talking about magical... when we took a tour with a Native Navajo guide one day he led us to this Ear Arch. I was surprised to see this arch for the first time in my life because I had used to see this arch in my dreams. How strange yet wonderful that was. Again, I am certain that I must have lived here in my past life!

魔法と言えば、、、。ネイティブインディアンのナバホのガイドさんとツアーに行った時、「耳のアーチ」に連れて行ってもらったのです。このアーチに行ったのはもちろん生まれて初めてでしたが、このアーチは過去に夢の中で見ていたのでビックリしました。なんとも不思議、、。やっぱり前世でここに住んでいたことは間違い無し！笑

Sacred Land, the Monument Valley 聖なる地モニュメントヴァレー

I am speechless here. Forget Sedona. To me this is the true vortex! Although this is my very first time to visit the Monument Valley I felt so at home as soon as we arrived. There was something very soothing and peaceful in the air... something timeless. I felt a longing feeling, too... as if I was here before. I am so excited to be here... a holy place for the Navajos. Tomorrow I will take a tour with a guide to learn about the history of this place!

もう言葉を失いました。セドナは忘れて下さい。私にとって、こここそヴォルテックス！モニュメントヴァリーに来たのは生まれて初めてですが、ここに着くなり、なんとも懐かしい気持ちになりました。なんかとっても気持ち良くてピースフルな空気が漂っています、、、時間が止まったような、、。そして昔ここに住んでいたような気がしました。ナバホたちの聖なる大地。もうワクワクします。明日はここの歴史をもっと知るために、ガイドさんと一緒に歩いて来ます！

Jeep Tour in Sedona セドナでジープツアー

I really did not want to do it, but it was my husband's idea to go on a jeep tour. On top of that, I found out that my husband had reserved a "4-wheel-adventure ride." It means that you go on the extremely bumpy roads with steep hills and so on. I don't like those rides, but I did not want to waste $110 either, so I went. (Oh, yes, I was upset that my husband had booked this without talking to me!)

私は行きたくなかったんです。でも旦那さんがジープツアーにどうしても行きたいと、、。しかも「４−ウイールアドヴェンチャーライド」というのを申し込んでいた！（私には黙っていました）このライドはデコボコした道や窮な坂をジープで走るスリリングな内容が売りなのですが、行かないと１１０ドルが戻って来ないと言われたので行くことに。笑　ああ、もちろん旦那さんが私に内緒で申し込んでいたことには頭に来ていましたよ〜！）



The ride was rough. You had to buckle up, and hold on to the handle bars. It was not my idea of enjoying Sedona. However, the scenery was amazing and spectacular. The guide was very knowledgeable, so I asked hundreds of questions (as usual). Actually, it was not bad at all!

ライドはきつかったです。皆シートベルトして手すりやバーにしがみつきます。私にとってのセドナの楽しみ方では無いな。でも、風景は素晴らしいものでした。ガイドさんも物知りで、私はいつものごとく、質問をいっぱいしました。ま、この体験も悪くはなかったかな！



We drove around the rocks for 3 hours, and at one point the guide took us to this massive red rock that had a long line across the rock. The line was showing the earth move that occurred 600 million years ago. Can you see how the placement of the line has been moved? (See the photo)
This was totally worth seeing... and it was fun. Would I do the 4-wheel-ride again? Absolutely not!

全部で３時間のツアー。最後の方でガイドさんが、巨大な赤い岩に連れて行ってくれて、岩の上を走る長い割れた線を見せてくれました。これは６億年前に地層がずれて起こったそうです。
地の位置がずれているのが見えますか？（上の写真）これは見る価値がありました。ということでジープツアーもけっこう楽しかったです。また行きますかって？もちろん、ノー！

Meditating in Sedona セドナでメディテーション

We've been in Sedona for several days now, and have visited a few vortex spots. Rather than running around here and there I've been trying to spend enough time in one spot, and really experience the place, air, the view and the energy. I meditate on the rocks trying to focus on my breathing. Sometimes I focus on the sound and smell around me. Today we are off to the Bell Rock, another vortex!

セドナに来て数日が経ちました。ヴォルテックスも数カ所訪れました。あちこちウロチョロするよりも、一つの場所でゆっくり時間をかけて、そこの空気やエナジーを体験するようにしています。岩の上に座って瞑想もしています。自分の息に集中したり、時にはまわりの音や香に集中するようにして。今日はベルロックというヴォルテックスに行ってきます！

Cathedral Rock, a vortex in Sedona セドナのヴォルテックス

I woke up this morning feeling so well rested, and we headed to the Cathedral Rock that is another vortex here in Sedona. It was hot (around 100F), but dry, so I was all right. However, we realized right away that the hike up to the top would be a hard one.

昨夜は良く眠れたので、今朝の体調はばっちり。私たちはセドナのヴォルテックスのCathedral Rockヘと向かいました。滅茶苦茶暑かったのですがドライなので大丈夫でした。でも、頂上まで登るのはそう容易でないことにすぐ気付きました。



When I reached 1/3 of the whole climbing I almost gave up. It was a hard hike, and it was hot. Yet we kept meeting people coming down from the top who told us, "It's worth it. You should go!" So I kept walking, walking and walking. There were many steep area that you just had to crawl using both hands. I never looked down knowing that it would stop me. We were already way up there!

３分の１程の位置で、もう諦めようかと思いました。ハードなハイクでとにかく暑い。でも、頂上から戻って降りてくる人たちが「行く価値あるよ。行くべきだ！」と皆言うので、ガンバリました。それから、歩いて、歩いて、また歩いて、、。とっても急な坂が沢山あって、岩なので、両手で這いながら登りました。下は絶対に見ませんでしたよ。見たら怖くて登れないと思ったんです。だってもうかなり高い場所でしたから！


Right before reaching the top I felt so weak that I could not walk anymore. I sat under a small tree, and said to myself, "I'd better conserve my energy to go down. Maybe I should just stop here..." However, people who were coming down kept telling me, "5 more minutes!" So I went on..., and yes, of course it was worth it! The view was spectacular, and the nice and cool breeze was welcoming me. I felt so close to the rocks in spirit. I felt as if the rocks were watching me withe embrace.

頂上に着く直前、もうマジで諦めようかと思いました。というのは、また降りなくてはならないので、そのための体力をとっておかねばと思ったからです。でも、また頂上から降りてくる人たちが「あと５分だよ！」と言うので頑張りました。なので頑張りました、、。そう、そして、、もう当然のこと価値ある体験でした！スペクタキュラーな眺め、涼しいそよ風が迎えてくれました。まるで「ようこそ」と言っているかのようでした。巨大な岩が真横に聳えたっていて、そのスピリットをひしひしと感じて、岩たちが私をみつめて包容してくれているような気持ちがしました。


Going down was harder. I basically went down on my butt. Rocks were burning hot, so my hands were hurting from grabbing the rocks to hold my body. On the way down I saw a cloud that looked like the Japanese character 愛 (love), and just could not believe my eyes! I hurried to take a photo of it, but the cloud changed its shape so rapidly. Impermanence... it was a beautiful moment.

降りるのはもっとたいへんでした。基本的にオシリで降りました。岩は燃える熱さ。岩を掴むたびに両手が痛いほど熱くなりました。降りている途中、ふと岩を見上げると、なんと、漢字の「愛」という形をした雲を発見！自分の目を疑いましたよ！すぐにカメラで写真を撮ったのですが、雲はあっという間に姿を変えてしまいました。インパーマネンス（永久でないこと）、、なんとも美しい瞬間でした。

Magical Sedona セドナの魔法

My mouth has been widely open since we arrived in Sedona. The landscape is beyond my imagination - it's spectacular! It's fascinating... because I've been to the Grand Canyon, Bryce and many more spectacular places, but there is something very "intimate" about Sedona. Now, please don't think that it's small here. Sedona is vast, big and magnificent, but there is something very personal and warm... I cannot explain it. It's a feeling of engagement and connection. Perhaps that is why it's known as a very spiritual place besides the fact that there are several vortex here. Now, the photo above is the spot where I "broke down" with tears. I will write about this amazing experience in depth later, but it was totally unexpected, and I was so surprised. In short, my heart was opening up somehow to heal, and I was told that it happens very often in Sedona...!

セドナに着いてから口がぽか〜んと開きっぱなしの私です。ここの風景は私の想像以上のもので、言葉になりません。不思議なのは、グランドキャニオン、ブライスなど沢山の凄く壮大な場所に行っているのに、ここはなぜだか、とても「インティメイト」（親密な）雰囲気なのです。もちろん信じられないくらい広く壮大なのですよ。でも、何かとても温かくてコネクションを感じる場所なのです。なのでセドナがスピリチュアルな場所だと言われる理由が分かるような気がします。もちろんヴォルテックスがあるのも大きな理由ですけれど！上の写真は、私が「崩れるように号泣した」パワースポットです。この経験はまたちゃんと書きますが、全く予期していなかったので自分でもビックリしました。簡単に言えば、私のハートが癒されるために開いたのですね。ここでは、そのようなことがよく起こるんだと言われました。




At this certain spot where you are surrounded by all the vortex in circle I offered some sage and rose petals to the mountains. The sage and rose petals were given to me by our amazing guide, Linda whom we believe to be a true healer.

全てのヴォルテックスに囲まれたサークルのスポットで、セイジと薔薇の花びらを山に捧げました。これはガイドさんのリンダがくれたんです。私たちはリンダは本物のヒーラーだと確信しました。




So many people had told me that Sedona was so magical, but to be honest I was a little skeptical.
However, now I know why this magnificent place has been loved and worshipped by so many. There is definitely energy here, and there is no doubt about it. It's our first day in Sedona, and what a beginning of a wonderful journey.

沢山の友人たちから、セドナはマジカルだと言われて来ましたが、実はちょっと疑っていた部分もあったんです。でも、ここに実際に来て、なぜこの場所が長い間、皆から崇拝され愛されて来たかが分かりました。すごいエナジーがあることは間違い無し。今日は私たちのセドナでの初日。なんて素晴らしい旅の始まりでしょう！

Jerome, Arizona アリゾナのジェロームという村

On the way to Sedona we stopped at a small village called Jerome. This used to be a copper mining town in the old days. It looks like a small town in South France. Certainly a lovely town, but a cup of regular coffee was two fifty! (Very touristy!)

セドナへ向かう途中、ジェロームという小さな村に寄ってみました。南フランスの田舎町を思わせるような雰囲気でした。とってもラブリー、、、でも、ただのコーヒーが２ドル半もして、やっぱり観光地！笑

SoCal beatiful 南カリフォルニアビューティフル

I checked out Solana Beach the other day. It's a small and lovely beach town. There was a main strip with the beautiful shops and cafes. We strolled down after having a vegetarian lunch at the Zinc Cafe, and found this store filled with beautiful things! I could have spent hours there... the beach here was ok, so I don't have any photos.

この間、ソラナビーチをチェックして来ました。小さくてラブリーなビーチタウンです。中心部にメインストリップがあって、お洒落なショップやカフェが並んでいます。私たちはズインクカフェというベジタリアンカフェでランチしてから、ブラブラしてみました。すると、まあそれはそれは綺麗なものが沢山あるお店をみつけました！何時間でもいられそうなショップでした。ビーチはまあまあ。なので写真は無し。




Then we went to Laguna Beach. It was a cute beach town, not so small, not too big. There were lots of people, and shops and restaurants were everywhere. The beach was spectacular! It was unbelievably gorgeous. It reminded me of Hawaii a bit - there was something for everybody- the surfing beach, family swimming beach, quiet bay... There are so many great beaches here in SoCal, and we will keep checking them out!

そして今度は、ラグナビーチに行ってみました。小さくもなく大きくもない可愛いビーチタウン。お店もレストランもいっぱいで人も沢山。そして、ビーチは素晴らしかった！信じられないくらい美しかったです。ゴージャス。ハワイを思わせるような雰囲気でした。ここには皆のためにすべてがある。サーフィンビーチ、ファミリー用のビーチ、静かなベイ、、。ここ南カリフォルニアには、素晴らしいビーチが沢山あります。これからもどんどん行ってみたいと思います！

The Empire State Building for Japan 日本のためにエンパイアステイトビルが！

This photo was taken by my good friend Yukine in New York. Yes, it is the Empire State Building, and it's lit up in red and white for Japan (the colors of the Japanese flag, the Rising Sun.) The Empire State Building is known for its light colors according to the significant occasions. For example, if a prime minister or a president of a nation is visiting NYC it lights up in its nation's colors. If the Yankees or Mets win they show their team colors to celebrate. I was really moved by this gesture. Thank you, New York! You are truly my home.

この写真は、私のニューヨークに住む仲良しのユキネさんが撮ったもの。そう、エンパイアステイトビルです。今、ビルの灯が赤と白になりました。そう、日の丸の色です。エンパイアステイトビルは、こうしてよく特別のオケージョンに合わせて、光の色を変えるのが習慣です。例えば、どこかの国の首相や大統領が訪問中は、その国の旗の色。ヤンキースやメッツが勝った日は、そのティームの色。日本のためにこうして赤と白にしてくれたことに、深く感動しました。ありがとう、ニューヨーク！やっぱりあなたは私の故郷。

Japan's World Cup Victory! 日本の勝利！

Japan vs. USA. That was a tough one for me, but I had to cheer my mother country, Japan. Especially those tiny Japanese women who worked so hard for this game. Normally I don't watch sports, but this game was very important. I was hoping for Japan to win to bring some uplifting spirit to today's Japan. Since the Tsunami Japan has been depressed, and we certainly needed this victory. Anyway, we were invited to a "dosa lunch" by a wonderful Indian family, so we all watched the game together.

日本対アメリカ。う〜んこれはタフでした。でもやっぱり母国の日本を応援したかった私。特に、華奢な日本人メンバーたちが頑張って来たのですからネ。普段はスポーツを全く見ない私ですが、このゲームは特別でした。今の日本に元気を与えてもらうためにも勝ってほしかった。たまたまこの日、あるインド人家族にランチに招待されていたので、皆でドサを食べながら試合を観戦したのです。



I had never had a home-made dosa before, and it was so delicious. I had 3 masala dosas, and I felt so full and sleepy afterwards... however, I had to cheer up the Japanese team "alone".... Yes, indeed, alone! Everyone in the room was cheering the US team, so I kept myself quiet. I recited a mantra in my heart, "ganbare, ganbare" (go for it, go for it)..., and at the very moment that Japan won, there was a total silence... so, not knowing much about the soccer rule I was confused. I did not know what just had happened. "Did Japan win?" I looked around the room, and saw a bunch of disappointed faces. "I guess Japan won," I was so happy! (Sorry, my American friends!)

家庭でホームメードのドサをいただくのは初めてでした。美味しかったです。私は３つもマサラドサを食べてしまった。食後はお腹いっぱいで眠いこと、、。でも、日本チームを「独りで」応援しなくてはならなかったので頑張りました。そう、「独りで」！皆はアメリカティームを応援していたんです。ですから私は静かにしていました。胸の中で「ガンバレ、ガンバレ！」とマントラのように繰り返していました。そして、最後に日本が勝った瞬間、サッカーのルールをよく知らない私は混乱していました。なぜなら、その瞬間、部屋中はシ〜ンと静まり返っていたからです。「日本勝ったかなあ、、、」と思いながら部屋を見渡すと、なんともがっかりした顔ばかり。「どうやら日本が勝ったみたい」と私はハッピーでした！（ごめんね、アメリカ人の友たちよ！）




What a great day it was. Wonderful friends, delicious Indian lunch and Japan's victory. Japan needed this kind of cheer. It will lift up the nation's spirit.... certainly for a while.

なんて素晴らしい日だったことでしょう。良い友人たち、美味しいインド料理に、日本の勝利。日本は国のスピリットをアップするためにこの勝利は必要でしたよネ、、少なくともしばらくの間は。

Dolphin Play イルカのお遊び

We go to the Swami Beach very often... almost every weekend. We love it there - it's just breathtakingly beautiful! The other day we saw a dolphin (wild, of course) in the sea! It was jumping up and down as swimming near the surfers. It was my first time ever to see a wild dolphin. I just love this place!

私たちはよくスワミビーチに行きます。最近は殆ど毎週末行ってるくらい。とにかく好きなんです、このビーチ。息を飲むほど美しい！先日は、イルカを見ました！（もちろん野生です）サーファーたちの近くをジャンプしながら泳いでいました。野生のイルカを見たのは、生まれて初めてです。ここ大好き！

Oil Pastels at the Met メトロポリタン美術館のオイルパステル

I fell in love with oil pastels when I was a junior at Parsons Schools of Design. I could not believe how rich the colors were on black papers, and ever since it's been my signature style - oil pastels on black paper. I must have used thousands of pastels over the years, and to me they are like living creatures.

NYのパーソンズスクールオブデザインの３年生の時、オイルパステルが大好きになりました。黒の紙の上に色を乗せた時のその美しさたるや。それ以来、黒い紙とオイルパステルは私のシグネチャースタイルになっています。もう今までに何千本というパステルを使ったことか。そしてパステルは私にとって生き物みたいなんです。



Their texture is affected by my body temperature and the weather. When it's hot they become soft (because they are made of oil), and they melt between my fingers. On a very cold day they are hard, so that I must be careful not to create harsh strokes that I don't like.

オイルパステルは、体温や室温に影響されます。暑い日だと柔らかくなり（油ですから）寒い日だと硬くなる。硬くなるとストロークがきつくならないように気をつけなくてはなりません。



At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York they were having a special exhibition on the pastel master pieces. Several photo panels were displayed showing how the pastels are made. These are hand-made pastels.

メトロポリタン美術館で、パステルのマスターピースの展示をしていました。パステルがどうやって作られるかもパネルで説明されていました。これらは手作りのパステル。




Each pastel is carefully made by hands... it must have the craftsman's heart and care... :)

一本一本、丁寧に手で造られるパステル、、。職人さんの気持ちが込められているのですネ。

During the hot and humid summer in New York my oil pastels used to melt in my fingers. When the pastels are very soft you must draw very softly, too, otherwise, the drawings become too smudgy. On a winter day in New York I used to hold them between my hands so that they would become a bit softer. They are my dear living materials. In SoCal the weather is pretty consistent - it's never too hot, not too cold. My pastels have been pretty consistent, too. They are probably feeling at ease :)

蒸し暑いニューヨークの夏、オイルパステルはよく私の指の中で溶けたものでした。そんな時は、やわらかく絵を描かないとなりません。でないとぐちゃぐちゃになってしまうのです。寒い日は、よくオイルパステルを柔らかくするために手の中で温めました。なんだか生き物のように可愛い画材です。ここ南カリフォルニアでは、暑くもなく寒くも無い一定した気候。オイルパステルも一定した堅さを保ってるようです。パステルたちもホッとしているのかな。笑

The summer fun in SoCal 南カリフォルニア夏の楽しみ

SoCal is a mecca for surfing. We see surfers, surf boards and surf shops everywhere.

南カリフォルニアはサーフィンのメッカ。サーファーたち、サーフボード、サーフショップをあちこちで見かけます。



When I first saw this road sign I thought it was a joke..., but it is not!

こんなロードサインを見た時、はじめはジョークかと思ったほど。でも、これ真面目なサインなんです。



So... I finally bought my first wet suit for surfing! Just kidding. I bought it so that I would be cold in the ocean - since the water is always cold I need the wet suit to be able to swim in the sea.

そして、とうとう私もサーフィンのためにウエットスーツをゲット！というのは嘘。サーフィンのためではなくて、海で泳ぐためです。ここの海の水はいつも冷たいので、これを着て泳ぐと寒くないのです。



The variety and the selection of the beach sandals here in SoCal are unbelievable! There are hundreds of them, all lined up! Too bad that I don't wear beach sandals. (I just don't like them) Perhaps I should...!

南カリフォルニアのビーチサンダルのバラエティとセレクションは見事です！何百という数が販売されています。私はビーチサンダルを履かないので残念、　（好きじゃないんです）でも履いてみようかな、、！

Memorable Summer Lunches 忘れられない夏のランチ

It's bee hot here in SoCal, and one day I was reminiscing this soothing Buddhist vegetarian lunch I had at a monastery in Koyasan, Japan. It was a hot day there, too, but the tatami floor room was so cooling, and the meal was light, healthy and just perfect.

南カリフォルニアもけっこう暑くなって来ました。ふと、高野山のあるお寺でいただいた、なんとも美味しい精進料理のことを思い出していました、、。あの日も暑かったけれど、畳の和室は涼しくて、お料理もライトでヘルシーで完璧でした。



Then I remembered this beautiful lunch I had in the Loire Valley, France. I was staying at my dear French friend's summer house there, and we ate in her garden every day. It was just too beautiful, and it was like a heaven!

そして、フランスはロワーヴァリーの素晴らしいランチも思い出しました。フランス人の親友の夏の別荘に泊まっていたのですが、毎日彼女の庭で食事をしたものです。とにかく美しくて天国のようでした！




And now, this is my daily lunch... well, not every day to be exact, but this store, "The Deli Lhama"
is on the next block from where I live. When we were looking for a place to live in San Diego we ran into this deli, and I saw it as a "sign" to live here... yes, due to my love and respect for the Dalai Lama!

そして、ここが今のランチ、、。毎日ではないですが、時々来るお店、「デリ・ラマ」は我が家からたったの１ブロック先にあります。実はサンディエゴで物件を探している時に、偶然みつけたお店。「これはサインに違いない、、」と思い、ここに住むことに決めたのでした。そう、私のダライラマ法王への尊敬心から、、！笑

Ryuichi Sakamoto 坂本龍一さん

Ryuichi Sakamoto, my long-time friend is probably best known for his award-winning composition for "The Last Emperor." He is also the original member of YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra), and they are releasing a new CD. I remember going to his concert in New York in the late 80's. I love not only his music but his life commitment to make the world a better place :)

長年にわたる友人で私の支援者である坂本龍一氏。アメリカでは、映画「ラストエンペラー」の音楽担当で一番知られています。龍一さんのYMOが新しいCDを発表しました。私は８０年代にニューヨークでYMOのコンサートに行った思い出があります。大好きなのは彼の音楽だけでなく、この世をもっと良くしようというライフコミットメントです。

The Dalai Lama's 76th B'day ダライラマ法王の７６歳誕生日

July 6 is the Dalai Lama's birthday, and now he is 76 years old. He was "discovered" by the search team when he was 2 years old, and was throned at age 4. At the age 15 he fled from Tibet to India due to the Communist China's invasion in Tibet. He often calls himself a "homeless" and laughs. He's living in exile since 1959.

７月６日はダライラマ法王の誕生日です。今年で７６歳になられました。彼は２歳の時に「サーチティーム」に「発見」され、４歳で即位。１５歳の時、共産党中国にチベットを侵略され、インドに亡命しました。よく彼は「私はホームレスだ」と笑います。１９５９年からずっと祖国から離れインドに住んでおられるのです。




The baby Dalai Lama on his mother's lap... He often talks about his late mother who was a truly compassionate person, and his father a short-tempered man.

お母さんの膝の上は赤ちゃんダライラマ。彼はよく母親の話をしますが、それはそれはとても優しく慈悲深い女性だったそうです。父親は短気で怖かったとか。笑

The Dalai Lama has a great sense of humor. Every time I see him he jokes all the time!

ダライラマ法王はユーモアセンスたっぷりの方で、いつもジョークを飛ばします！



There was a huge birthday celebration for him today in Washington D.C. with the honorable guests - the grand son of Mahatma Gandhi and the son of Martin Luther King Jr. Actually, I was asked to present a "kata" (a white greeting scarf) to the Dalai Lama on stage as a representative from Japan, but I could not make it to D.C. because I was sick. ワシントンDC訪問中のダライラマ法王のために、大きなお誕生日イベントが開催されました。ガンジーの孫、マーティンルーサーキングの息子さんが名誉ゲストでした。実は私は、このイベントで日本代表としてダライラマ法王にカタ（挨拶に使う白いスカーフ）をプレゼントしてくれませんか？というオファーをいただいたのですが、あいにく体調が悪かったため、DCまで行くことができませんでした。こんな名誉なことを断るはめになってしまい、ひどくがっかりしたのですが、幸いにもDCに住む私の友人（日系アメリカ人）が代わりにしてくれることになり、一安心。各国の代表がダライラマ法王にカタをプレゼントしました（写真はベトナムの代表）。



So I offered him this lily of the valley from my garden. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, you are my inspiration. I have seen you with my own eyes that you treat everyone equally - young or old, man or woman, rich or poor, famous or non famous, Buddhist or non Buddhist... you have made me get up again and again when I've fallen. I thank you for your tireless work for the people and the world, and I pray that you and your people will return to your homeland, Tibet, very, very soon, and I will keep trying whatever I can to make it happen.

私はお庭で育てたスズランをダライラマ法王に捧げました。ダライラマ法王、あなたは私のインスピレーションです。私は自分の目で何度も、あなたが皆に対して同じように接しているのを見ました。老人、若者、男性、女性、お金持ち、貧乏人、有名人、無名人、仏教徒、仏教徒でない者、、、。世の中の人々のために休むことなく動いておられる。心から感謝します。あなたとチベット人たちが、一日も早く祖国チベットへ戻れますよう祈ります。そしてそれを実現させるために、私もできることは続けます。

Perfect weather of SoCal 南カリフォルニアの完璧な天気

The weather in San Diego this spring/summer has been amazingly great. It's been sunny, dry and
gorgeous. Usually in June there is a gloomy period called, "June gloom" that it rains lightly everyday, but this year we did not even have it. As a summer person I am loving it! We cleaned up our terrace table outside that we did not use for a while, and began having meals outside. It's just heavenly. I know why San Diego is called "the finest city in America."

今年の春／夏のサンディエゴのお天気は最高です。毎年、南カリフォルニアでは「ジューングルーム」と呼ばれる雨期のような時期があって、毎日どんより雲に小雨が降ったりするのですが、今年はそんな時期も無くて、毎日ゴージャス！夏人間の私には最高！なので、しばらく使ってなかったテラステーブルもお掃除して、また外で食事をし始めました。天国のようです。ああ、だからやっぱりここサンディエゴは「アメリカで最も美しい街」と呼ばれているのですネ〜。

Lily of the Valley すずらん

Ever since I moved to SoCal I'd been looking for the lily of the valley, but I just could not find it here. Only once I saw a tiny bunch at the Whole Foods, and it was $30 dollars! "Why it is so expensive?" I asked. Apparently, lily of the valley does not grow well in SoCal, and they have to be shipped from the east coast. In other words, it is a high maintenance flower.

南カリフォルニアに来てからずっと、すずらんの花を探していましたが、みつかりませんでした。一度だけ、ホールフーズマーケットで、それはそれは小さなブーケが３０ドルで販売されていたのを見ただけ。「どうしてこんなに高いんですか！？」と尋ねると、すずらんは、東海岸から空輸されてくるので高いのだそう。西海岸の気候に合ってないため、ここカリフォルニアではハイメインテナンスの花なのです。



However, to me, lily of the valley is a symbol of spring, and not having the four seasons here in SoCal I was desperate to have this lovely flower. So I ordered from an east coast farm. The pips arrived in a box, covered with shredded paper. It was moist and nice! They are growing fine so far (photo above) in my garden!

四季が無い南カリフォルニアで、春には欠かせない花、すずらんがどうしても恋しくなった私は、東海岸のある花農場からオーダーして取り寄せました。届いたのは球根。湿った紙に包装されて来ました。順調に成長していますよ！



Soon my garden will be filled with its beautiful fragrance... :) Lily of the valley is my favorite fragrance in the world, and when I was in South France I bought so many "muguet" perfumes there.

もうすぐ私のお庭は、すずらんの香でいっぱいになることでしょう、、！すずらんの香は一番好きな香。南フランスにいた時も、沢山、「ムゲ（スズラン）」の香水を買い込みました。

Many companies make lily of the valley perfumes, but my favorite is Penhaligon's. The fragrance is so elegant and sophisticated.

多くのブランドがスズランの香水を出していますが、中でも気に入っているのが、ペンハリゴンのもの。エレガントで上品な香です。


The other day I went to have lunch at a local cafe, and the owner lady who was serving me had a beautiful fragrance on her. "That must be lily of the valley!" I said, and she smiled. When I complimented her fragrance she brought me this bottle (photo above) to show me. "You can keep it," she told me. I declined, but she insisted that I would take it. How kind was that?

この間、家の近くのカフェでランチをしていた時のこと。オーナーの女性、なんとも素晴らしい香がしたんです。「それ、すずらんの香ですね？」と私が褒めると、彼女は喜んで、香水のボトルを持って来てみせてくれました。「これ持って帰って」と私に譲ってくれるので「いえ、そんな」と言って遠慮したものの、「どうしてももらってくれ」と言うので、有り難くいただきました。なんて優しい！
This is my favorite soap of lily of the valley. Roger and Gallet - it's a classic. It comes in a round box, and it smells heavenly...! Lilly of the valley certainly brings me a fresh air in SoCal!
