India 4~Varanasi's Sari~ インドへの旅４〜ヴェラナシのサリー〜

After almost having a panic attack on the chaotic Varanasi streets I decided to stay low key in a sari store. Varanasi is known for its own unique sari design - with the gold broquade. Our guide proudly repeated that Aishwarai Rai (a famous Bollywood actress) had bought a two-thousand-dollar-sari for her wedding. At a sari shop they were demonstrating how the saris are made. ヴェラナシの路上のカオスに圧倒された私は、おとなしくサリーでも見に
行くことにしました。ヴェラナシのサリーはインド内でも有名で、
金の刺繍の見事なデザインが特徴です。私のガイドさんは、それはそれは得意そうに、
「アイシワラ・ライ（インドを代表する女優）は、ウエディングドレス用に
１枚２千ドルもするサリーをここヴェラナシで買ったんだ」と繰り返して
言いました。サリー店では、サリーがどのようにして織られるかを見せて
くれました。（上の写真は糸になる前のシルク。青が綺麗！）


This man was weaving a beautiful sari, and the design was input by computer. Yet, he was carefully paying attention to his every move. The bodhi tree leaf motifs were solid 24k gold, they told me. Traditional weaving (without computer design input) was done by two men there. All the designs exist only in their heads, and they were handed down by generations and generations. However, they told me that there are only few men left who can do so...

このようにして一枚づつ織られていました。これはコンピューター
にデザインがインプットされた織り方。それでも、職人さんが目を
光らせながら丁寧に織っています。菩提樹の葉のモチーフが
金の糸（２４Kだそう）で、キラキラと美しかった。すべて手織りの
サリーもあります。これはデザインは職人さんの頭の中だけに
存在していて、何代にもわたって受け継がれるもの。今、ヴェラナシ
には、そのような職人さんが殆どいないとか。この工場には２人
いました。



Well, well, well. These are the saris I bought. I had absolutely no interests in buying saris, but I don't know what happened. When I saw those two I just fell in love with them. The shop sales men were saying, "Oh, they are perfect for you!" (Of course they would say that) and I had to have them...So, now I have those two gorgeous saris what should I make out of them? 興味無いわ～と呟いていたくせに、見たとたんに一目惚れ。
まわりにも「貴女にお似合いですね～」なんてお世辞を言われて
ついつい、、。さあ、このサリーの生地で何を作ろうか。
