After leaving Delhi more than twelve hours ago we finally reached Dharamsala, a beautiful Himalayan town. I will be writing about it in depth later here. Then, we left for Varanasi, one of the oldest ancient cities in the world. As Mark Twain raved about it Varanasi was a beautiful city of art and music. It took only one hour and 20 min. by airplane from Delhi. We went straight to the "ghats" - near the Holy Ganges River. However, to get there was a nightmare. I almost got hit by a rickshaw and a motorbike twice! The traffic was horrifyingly chaotic!
デリーから車で１２時間かけて着いたのは、インド北部は
ヒマラヤの麓、ダラムサラ。この街でのエピソードは後に
またじっくりと書くことにして、次に向かったのは、世界で
最も古い都、ヴェラナシ。かのマーク・トウエインも絶賛
した、美しい芸術の街です。私は昔からここを訪れるのが
夢でした。デリーから飛行機で約１時間ちょっと。直行した
のは、「ガット」（聖なるガンジス川のほとり）です。でも、
そこに辿り着くまでに、２度もリクショーやオートバイに
ひかれそうになった私。インドならではのカオス渋滞！
When we finally reached the ghat it was a sunrise. The locals were busy preparing for the morning puja, and the little boys and girls were selling the puja flowers and candles.
死ぬ想いをしてガットまで歩き、やっと着いた時は、
日の出前。朝のプージャ（祈りの儀式）の準備で皆、
忙しそうでした。６歳位の少年少女たちが、お供えの
お花を売って歩いています。
The Holy Ganges... although it is 100% polluted the devoted Hindus wash themselves, splash themselves, swim in there, drink the water and pray in there to start a day every day. Our guide told me that we, the foreigners would definitely die if we did so...! The Lord Shiva lives here in Varanasi, the Hindus believe. Therefore, it is the place that all Hindus want to visit at least once in their life times. The vivid colors, chaos, revolting odor, sadus, deformed homeless... Varanasi was overwhelming to me, a tough and jaded (?) New Yorker who'd seen a lot!

有名すぎる川に、ヒンズーの信者たちは、頭までつかり、
泳ぎ、体を洗い、水を飲み、祈りを捧げることで一日を迎えます。
外国人が真似したら確実に死ぬとガイドから言われました。笑
シーヴァ神が住むと言われているヴェラナシ。ヒンズー信者にとっては
一生のうち一度は訪れたい街、ヴェラナシ、、。
鮮やかな色、異様な臭い、カオス、サドウたち、腕や足が
無いホームレスたち、、。
ニューヨーク育ちの私でさえ、圧倒されっぱなしの街でした。
