Ecole de Paris and Me フランコフィルだった私

I was a complete Francophile in my 20's. I adored Paris in the 1920's. In my Provencal SoHo loft I listened to the French chansons, I wore the French vintage dresses and talked about 'art & life' with my French boyfriends at the French cafes in SoHo while sipping the French espresso. My ultimate muse was "Kiki de Monparnasse." Yes, she was not only my muse, but the queen of Ecole de Paris. (photo: "Kiki" by Andre Derain)

I was also fascinated by Leonard Foujita. Yes, Tsuguharu Fujita. Since we had the same last name I felt a special connection. In Paris where I visited very often the French dealers always asked me, "Are you related to Foujita?" "Oui, mais sur!" I used to reply. (Oh, by the way, I never forgot to add, "Only spiritually.")

Foujita and Kiki were good friends. The photo above is one of his portrait of Kiki, and this particular piece made him very famous. He took advantage of his delicate Japanese line technique in order to stand out among other great artists at that time. His unique style allured the westerners, and made him one of the most successful artists in Paris. Foujita was the only person who attended Kiki's funeral. After her glorious prime time no one cared about her obviously. I can vividly picture Foujita standing at her funeral as a loyal and dignified Japanese friend.

I cannot talk about my 20's and early 30's without mentioning France. I cannot remember how many times I visited Paris and South France, especially Collioure, a small fishing village in South France. Actually, the Fauvism started there, and many masters such as Picasso, Matisse and Derain spent summers there. This piece above is "Collioure" by Andre Derain, and it is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. At another small village next to Collioure you can see this spectacular mural by Dali at the local train station.

"You must come and stay with us!" My Parisian collectors who have their summer houses in South France send me the sweet invitations every summer, but for the past few years I have not been able to go back... Perhaps next summer I should visit my favorite South France again and revisit all those magical places that inspired the masters of Ecole de Paris.
