Jyoti bihanga

Jyoti Bihanga is my favorite vegetarian restaurant in San Diego. It is a part of the ashram of Sri Chinmoy, an Indian spiritual teacher who passed away in 2007. I do not know much about him at all except that I have seen his face and have heard of his name before. I have a feeling that he was a good man... just because the restaurant has such good aura and its staffs (disciples in sari) look so happy and blissful... or because the food is simply good...!

The salad is so fresh and comes with a very tasty dressing.

"Neatloaf," they call this signature dish of the restaurant. It's made of brown rice, grains, ricotta cheese and tofu. It is so good, but so rich that it knocked me out to sleep!

Yummm. The chocolate moose cake. Oh, and the chai. They make an authentic chai with some serious spice in it.

The restaurant's walls are filled with lovely paintings by Sri Chinmoy. Appearently he was an artist, too. There is a small shop corner at the restaurant that you can buy his books and hand bags like this pretty pink ones. He painted with vivid colors. I like that. I cannot wait to go there again soon. Perhaps the next time I will pick up his book and see what he had to say.

Ravi Shankar in San Diego

Ravi Shankar. What a master he is. I don't remember when I ever heard his music for the first time, but he has been my favorite artist forever. Some years ago at my exhibition in Japan a gentleman with a long hair came with a huge sitar. He greeted me and said, "How do you do. I read that you love Ravi Shankar somewhere, and I came to play for you. I studied with him and this is the sitar that he gave to me." I was thrilled, and let him play the sitar. It was beautiful. However, the director of the sleek gallery did not like the hippy-looking man with a long beard playing the sitar at the gallery. So he was kindly asked to stop. I had never met Ravi Shankar, but that disciple of his brought me closer to the master.

Then, yesterday, I felt even much closer. I found out that Ravi Shankar lives in San Diego!!! He lives in Enchinitas where I love! I could not believe that nobody told me about this. He is 91 years old, but still playing. How amazing is that? And this photo with the Dalai Lama... how great is that?

For some reasons Ravi Shankar's music makes me feel so pure... I feel pure and cleansed. It talks to some deep place in my heart, and it is moving. I cannot wait to see him perform in April.

Departures Magazine and the Maharajas

If you have an American Express Black or Platinum card you are supposed to be receiving this magazine. Then you can enjoy reading my artist interview, "The Arts Inspired by India" in this beautiful issue of India. I was interviewed because they knew that I loved India and my art had been influenced by its culture. It's funny, when American Express came up with the Black Card some years ago, the first person around me to get it was a friend of mine in NYC who was a Maharaja's son. I remember him telling me, "I can buy a jaguar with this card," and he probably did.

So when I went to India again some years ago my Maharaja friend's parents, the maharaja, invited me to his beautiful home in Delhi. I always stay at the Imperial Hotel in Delhi because I absolutely love that hotel. It is like staying in a museum! They have thousands of art within the hotel, and I just love looking at every piece in every corner of the beautiful hotel. When his mother came to pick me up at the hotel, she told me that her husband's ancestors, the maharajas' portraits were displayed at the hotel. She was kind enough to show me those portraits there. The photo above is my friend's grand father.

And this is his great-grand father Maharaja.

Then this one... is Runjeet Singh. He was the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. Since I was a child I have always been fascinated by the maharajas. We had a huge disco called, Maharaja in Tokyo during the 80's, but that is not why. Honestly, I don't know why, but when I saw the amazingly stunning jewelries designed by Cartier for the maharajas I felt something very familiar and nostalgic. You can call me a fool, but hey, who knows? Perhaps I was one of them in the past! lol

Palm trees, palm trees!

My daily life is surrounded by the palm trees since I moved to SoCal. I wake up with the stunning view of the palm trees, walk my dog along with the palm trees and end my day with the spectacular sunset over the palm trees. They are everywhere, even in the carp pond (can you see the palm tree there?) As they are all over me I'd like to think of them as my protectors!

I saw this woman meditating at the foot of the palm tree... Yes, it is a bit taller than a bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, so what?

Then, where is this? This photo was taken by my friend, Jeff Holck, in New York. It's a large photo by John Baldessari at the Met, a conceptual artist. I had never heard of this artist before, so I googled. It's funny to find out that he is from San Diego! He must have photographed one of the most familiar items in his life - the palm trees. It must be not so bad to look at this in a icy cold New York right now!

So, this is John Baldessari... what a beautiful and shiny hair he's got!

Am I the only one to think of Dr. Zaius from the Planet of the Apes...? That was my favorite movie, and I only saw it 30 times!!! Now I want to see it again...

Swami Beach & Love

The Swami Beach in Enchinitas is my favorite beach. It's not only known for the surfing, but it is just beautiful with the emerald green water. I always climb up the Swami Ashram on the hill to look down this gorgeous ocean and its surfers. This place makes you want to come back again and again..., and that is what I do.

At the sunset, there were so many surfers in the ocean. Young and old, men and women... everyone surfs here. As I was trying to photograph this amazing sunset, suddenly a man and a woman appeared in my lens like a romantic movie scene.

Then, look what they did...!

These girls were such good surfers. I did not realize that they were female when I had watched them surf.

I am not a surfer, but this beach is a sanctuary for me. It always brings me a joy and makes me feel so at home. A magical place of love, indeed!

SoCal colors

I love colors, and there are lots of them here in SoCal. The first thing I noticed when I landed here in San Diego was the color of the Sun light. It is different from the east coast. It is more intense, fluorescent-like and has more of the blue tone. The colors of the fruits are more vivid, too. My daily fun is to go to the Wholefoods which is only 2 minutes walk from my house, to shop and to just look at the beautiful local produce. Those California oranges are so sweet and juicy, and the local veggies are so fresh and so lovely to look at!

I call this the "green & yellow" section of the small and round watermelons, papayas and pineapples... they smell so sweet!

The Valentine's Day bouquet here is also very SoCal - filled with lots of tropical flowers!

This is the pink and purple section of the lovely hydrangeas. Those flowers have some magic over me for some reasons. They always make me feel "nostalgic" and make me want to buy them.
Colors are fun. Colors make you feel happy. Colors are everywhere if you look carefully. Enjoy colors, and thank you, God, for creating all those gorgeous colors in SoCal!

Unforgettable sweets

I love sweets, and I've had some amazing sweets around the world. When I close my eyes some incredible sweets come to my mind and make my mouth very watery. My number one dessert ever is the peanut chocolate tart at Le Bernardin in New York. I wrote about it before in this blog, but please allow me to repeat that this tart will make you speechless. I would fly to New York just to have this tart (actually, I will do so in spring!) and I certainly wouldn't share it with anyone!

The next heavenly sweet that comes to my mind when I close my eyes... is the tarte tatin at Le Grenouille in New York. This is an old-school-French restaurant and so is the tarte. Mon Dieu (My God), I should say, it was the best tarte tatin ever! It was better than the ones I had in France. The restaurant is filled with beautiful flowers and it is absolutely gorgeous. I had lunch there with my father often, and the elegant owner madame used to come to our table to say "Bonjour." She looked like Sonia Rykiel, the fashion designer. I do not have the photo of the tarte, but it looked like this photo below. It is dark, rustic and dense. It is the real thing. I must have that tarte again before I die...!

The next sweet takes me to Turkey. Have you ever heard of "Dondurma"? It is a Turkish ice cream that is very gooey and gummy. I heard that they mix gum syrups with cream so that it would not melt in the hot climate. I was obsessed with dondurma while I was there, but could not find it in the city such as Istanbul. Perhaps it is more for the tourists. Finally I found it in Cappadocia that is known as the location for the movie, Star Wars. Dondurma tasted like a regular ice cream, but it was gooey indeed. It would stretch out like a long thread. It is not something I must have again, but it was definitely a memorable one.

Another forgettable dessert I have ever had was the stuffed apricot in Turkey. We found this restaurant in Cappadocia one day while we were walking around the local village. It was literally someone's home, and the family served dinner at their dining room. All ingredients came from their garden. Stuffed flowers (with meat inside), stuffed eggplants, stuffed this, stuffed that. Then the dessert time came. Stuffed apricot with almond. It was unbelievable. Apricot was so tender that melted in your mouth, and the almond inside was so aromatic. I remember that I stole my husband's and ate it. I did not take any photos of that amazing apricot dish, but have found something similar. It looked like this photo below. I would go back there just to have this.

There are more unforgettable sweets in my life, so I shall write about them sometimes, but today I will stop now... because all those sweet memories are driving me crazy! (and hungry.)

The Best Chai

I love tea. Therefore, I love beautiful tea cups and tea sets from around the world. The photo above is a part of my Moroccan tea set collection. You must have a good mint tea with those!
My favorite is chai, the Indian masala milk tea. My day cannot start without a good cup of chai, and I am extremely fussy about the taste. Chai needs to be boiled for a long time in order to get that dense and aromatic flavor from the tea leaves and milk. So for some years now, my husband who gets up earlier makes the chai for me. I don't know how he does it, but it is good... I think that he puts some extra love in it :)

The best chai I have ever had was in Madras (Chennai), India. Madras is known for its tasty coffee, the Madras Coffee. Before I left for Madras some of my desi friends had told me, "Oh, Rima. You MUST try the Madras coffee there. It really changed my life!" And you know what? They were not kidding. I could not believe the taste. It was unbelievable!!! Then I said to myself, "If the coffee is this good the chai must be amazing."

I found a chai wala on a street, and ordered one. The locals were served in the glasses, but the chai man gave me a tiny plastic cup that was three times smaller than a glass. He charged me 8 rupees instead of 2 ruppees for the locals. I was a little bothered by it, but could not care less. Hey, I was a tourist with a camera. What could I do? So I focused on the chai. Then... Oh. My. God. I was speechless. Could not believe it. It was heaven. I am sorry, I cannot find a good word to describe its magical taste! I was standing there in silence, totally mesmerized. The local men, about a dozen of them, were watching me very seriously. "Have another! Take my photos!," they kept talking at me, but I was in my own world. I ordered another one, and another... (well, the cup was so small!) As I write this my mouth is getting watery...

Then I had chai several times a day every day while I was in Madras. Each cup was so sweet, and I could not figure out if I would be buzzed up with caffeine or sink down with sugar. All I can remember is that I was happy to have each cup. This man in the photo was serving chai at our table when we were dining at a five-star-hotel. He poured the chai from high up into the cup, so I asked him why. "To cool down and also to whip up the taste." It was so entertaining to watch - it was so elegantly done! It has been a while since the last time I went to Madras. I think that I must go there again soon... just to have the best chai in the world.

Turandot and David Hockney

Turandot. This Puccini's masterpiece is one of my favorites, and I have seen it many times at the Met in New York, but I could never get tired of it. We found out that Turandot was at the San Diego Opera the night before the show, so we bought whatever tickets left that night... and of course they were good but expensive Orchestra seats. "It will be my Valentine's gift for you," my sweet husband said. "Great!" I booked the tickets right away!

I was a little nervous before the show. I was afraid that I might be disappointed... in any ways: I grew up with operas. My mother was a singer (amateur) and sang often. My father was a patron at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and we used to go to the Met every Friday for many years during the seasons. As a small child it was rather a torture. Sitting and listening to people scream for 3 hours was not quite fun for me. I remember making excuses often not to go to the opera. Then when I grew up I began to love the operas, but ironically I could not afford myself to buy the best seat that I was used to! Anyway, my point is that I grew up with the best operas in New York, so I was afraid to see anything less and to be disappointed.

The show was spectaclar and one of the best I had ever seen. The set design was done by David Hockney. His colorful and whimsical paper-cut-out like design added a modern feeling to this ancient tale. Ian Falconer designed the costume, and I must say that I wanted to wear every single coat that he had designed - they were breathtakingly beautiful! At the San Diego Opera they show the translation above the stage. At the met the translation is in front of your seat. Wherever the translation is it is a good idea, and it helps the audience to understand better. When I was a child there was no translation during the opera, so you had to read and understand the story before the show (unless you understand Italian and German, etc.) The stage was much smaller than the Met, but I felt more connected to the performance, and certainly there was a good connection with the audience and the entire show.

Right before the opera we found out that my husband knew the exective director of the San Diego Opera, and we were invited to the VIP Tent during the intermissions. There were many tasty o'douves and desserts including some red-heart-cookies. The napkins and table cloth were red. The curtain was red. The carpet was red. David Hockney's stage was red. As I was enjoying some red cookies I looked down. Then here they were... my red velvet shoes matching the red carpet. What a beautiful and splendid evening with lots of red... Happy coming Valentine's Day to everyone!

Plastic Soup

We were invited to this small private chamber music and dinner at the St. Paul's Church. The intimate group of less than 50 guests- all dressed in black- was freezing during the cocktail in the courtyard. The temperature had dropped from the day time 80F to 45F! After sipping chilly cold drinks outside having some warm dinner felt like a savior. Good food, good wine and good live music over the beautiful candle lights... Then the conversation over the dessert led to the "plastic soup" somehow. I had never heard of such word, and it was just too shocking.

So, the Plastic Soup is a "land" of plastic debris floating in the Pacific Ocean, and the size is twice bigger than Texas. As I researched online some said, "the size of the USA" and some said, "the distance between Hawaii and Japan." Whichever may be right, it is huge. It is the world's biggest garbage bin... right in the ocean. How heartbreaking is that?

It is hard to image what it looks like... in the size of two Texas! People have described it as "swirl of soup" because when the plastic melts it becomes this goouey thing. Needless to mention the chemical toxin. So, are there anything we can do to clean up? I guess not. It has been floating for years now, and it is getting bigger and bigger. All we can do is to buy less plastics and throw them in the recycle bins. After such a lovely music and dinner all I could think about was the Plastic Soup. Oh well.

Winter Cacti

I am a little concerned about this tilted cactus. This is my neighbour's garden, and I pass it everyday to walk my dog. This particular one seems to want to go south while everyone else grows towards the sky. Obviously the house owner has put the string to hold it. There is always a black sheep or two everywhere...

This beautiful bird of paradise has a tenant, Mr. giant snail. I wonder how long it took him to get up there... since the bird of paradise can be very tall!

I am still not sure if I like this giant bird of paradise... This is in front of our building, and the tree is about 9 feet tall. The white flowers are the size of a human head (or bigger), and it looks beautiful, but quite grotesque. For some reason this tree seems to grow bigger in the winter time. I guess that cacti don't slow down in SoCal!
