My 28-yr-old Virgin Son 28

Spring has come to Socal, and actually it feels more like a summer during the day.
Vivid flowers are blooming everywhere, and my pug dog, Chai is loving it!

Chai tries to hump every dog he meets during his walks... Well, he is a 28 yr-old virgin
after all (4 years old in dog age.) The other night I saw him sleeping like this on the sofa.
It's cute, but a bit sad... Since spring has come I hope that love will come to Chai soon!

Anti-Cancer Miracle Fruits

Every time I go to Hawaii I make sure to eat soursop fruits (the green ones in the front). It tastes like apples and strawberries, and very refreshing. Soursops are known as anti-cancer fruits, and they are supposed to be 10,000 times stronger than the strong chemo therapy. However, due to the pharmaceutical industry it has not been officially admitted, I hear.

Since I fell in love with this miracle fruits I had been searching for them here in Socal, but no luck. One Saturday morning at a farmers market I asked the fruit seller.
"I don't have soursops, but I have cherimoya. They are just like soursop and they are anti-cancer, too!"He said.

So of course I tried. They tasted just like the soursop and had lots of big seed just like the soursop.
The seeds are poisonous so you must be careful that it makes you eat very slowly. Well, it makes you be mindful and taste deeper!

Cherimoyas grow in Socal until May. I shall definitely enjoy those miracle fruits indeed!

Kyoto Prize Award

The symposium of the Kyoto Prize Award, one of the most prestigious awards in Japan was held in San Diego where Kyocera's headquarter resides. The honorable chair, Dr. Kazuo Inamori (the founder of Kyocera and the Inamori Foundation) along with three award laureates this year, Dr. Ivan Sutherland (who invented the Sketchpad), Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi (Cell biologist ) and my friend from New York, Dr. Gayatri Spivak (philosopher) all came to attend the gorgeous symposium, and I was fortunate to spend a few days with those amazing people with lots of brain cells!

The event began with a fancy black tie gala dinner party. I was suggested to wear
kimono, but I wore this beautiful Indian dress for my friend, Dr. Gayatori.

Dr. Inamori, one of the most renown entrepreneurs and philanthropist in Japan today first came to the states by himself after being rejected by everyone in Japan when he had proposed to start a ceramic company. He started Kyocera, one of the biggest ceramic companies in the world in America, and later he brought it back to Japan. He was appointed to be an honorable chairman of the Japan Airline and he succeed to  rebuild the company.

Although he is a famous businessman his personality is very gentle, friendly, warm and kind. When we talked together he kept his smile on him and held my hands with his warm hands. His energy is extremely clear and serene that reminded me a holy man.

There are so many amazing people who are working so hard in order to make this world better. Dr. Ohsumi, too, was such a kind gentleman, and I was so impressed by his humbleness.

What a great few days I experienced with humanity.

Ability To Forget

It's been two years since the tsunami tragedy in northern Japan. When it happened I could not get out of my bed for three days out of a deep sorrow. It seems like it happened only yesterday.
For the second anniversary of the tsunami I was able to donate 40 copies of my recent book, "Save The Himalayas" to a temporary library in Rikuzentakada city where the entire city was washed away.
I wanted to donate my books right after the tsunami, but of course, the situation was too devastating that there was now way to do so. Finally my dream came true with a help of my long-time supporter of Books For Children, Jun Hasegawa. I am hoping that this heart-warming tale of the Himalayas will cheer up those victims who are still suffering.

Two years have past since the big tsunami, and eighteen years have passed since the Hanshin Earthquake. Yet, not all damages have been fixed at all.

As there is a saying,
"God gave us the ability to forget, so that we can forget the pain
and move on," I pray that people forget the pain and keep having hope
to move on, especially I hear that many have been committing suicide
out of despair.

I pray for those victims in northern Japan who are still suffering, and
I pray also for those who are suffering around the world.

Tradition and Courage

I saw this photo on facebook one day, and it said that when this matador torero thought that the bull was going to kill him it never attacked this bull fighter. He saw the bull's innocent eyes, and was deeply moved. Later this matador torero became an animal activist. (Some say that this story is not accurate.)

The bullfight traces back to B.C. and it was a sacrifice to God/Universe. The time has changed since then, and today in 2013, many wonder if bullfight is a tradition that should be kept or not.
Is killing animals as an entertainment good for the human conscience? That has been a big
question. However, it is not easy to change a long-time tradition. In Spain today many are against the bullfights, and some cities have banned the bullfights already. Yet, it is still the most popular and traditional game/entertainment in Spain. I personally want this to stop... because if the "offering to God" was the real purpose of the bullfights there must be other things that people can offer without killing any animals.

America is getting ready for Easter, and many, many pigs have been slaughtered to become the Easter meal as it is a tradition to eat ham on Easter Sunday. This tradition began during the pioneer time in America when people had to preserve the food to survive, and the preserved ham was timely and convenient for the Easter.

Today, most of the pigs, cows, chickens and other animals never ever see the sun light once in their lives at their meat factories. Since the first day that they are born they are trapped in the dark cage where they cannot even move. Pigs are supposed to be smarter than dogs, and we cannot imagine the suffering they must go through there.

This is such a heavy topic that I am writing today, but I wanted to mention what my teacher once said to me.
"There are two kinds of traditions in this world - a tradition that we must preserve and a tradition that we must let go as our world changes. You must think, analyze what is important, and if it is neseccery you must change the traditions."

Is it really important to watch someone kill animals as an entertainment?
Is it really important only it is because it has a long history?
Is it really important to find any form of "art" in that killing game?
Is it really important to still eat ham just because that was all they had back then?

Today I had my annual breast cancer exam. During the exam I asked my doctor,
"Why are there more and more women getting breast cancer today?"

"The number one reason is what we eat today," The doctor answered with
conviction.

"The meat we eat contains so much hormones and other bad things. Our food
today is not safe. The best thing is to avoid meat and fish (due to the mercury),
eat organic vegetables, fruits, nuts and a bit of cheese," she told me.

What you give comes back to you, after all. If you do good to the earth, nature
and other living things you'd be good, too... it seems.

There are many traditions that we should let go, and I hope to be one of many
people who would have guts to do so.

Marriage Over Career

On a snowy night in New York there was a huge wedding for my long-time dear friend! There
were several hundreds guests, a Bhangra orchestra and lots of fabulous food.
The wedding party went on until 2am in the morning!

She is giving up an oustanding career as a psycologist to join her new husband in
Pakistan. "Are you really sure about this?" I asked her. "Rima, it took me many
years to find the right person for me. Career is not as important as my life-partner,"
she replied with no hesitation.

However, as an independent and smart woman she has been talking with Harvard
and other prestigious universities to establish a research lab in Pakistan where there
are only six shrinks in the entire nation.

She and I have emotionally supporting each other for many years. We shared
many, many tears and smiles together over the years.
At her wedding night I was overwhelmed with joy as if it was my own special
day. Wishing her many, many more years of happiness!!!

The 4th Marriage 4

I've been back in cold New York again for my business meetings and a big wedding
of my dear friend. She's a Harvard graduate Ph.D., and upon her request I painted a
portrait of her and her husband.
I have two other friends in NYC who will soon get married... for the fourth time.
They are both famous celebrities in show business, so it is not that rare, but as a friend
I have mixed feelings of worries and joy....
Just wishing all my friends a great happiness!
