We don't hear about the Occupy Wall Street movement anymore, but it is still going on here and there, I've heard. I saw this eye-catching, giant chess board at the Union Square the other day.

When I was a student the place of political rallies was the Washington Square Park in the West Village. Nowadays it seems to be at the Union Square - it is right next to the major subway stop where thousands of people are going in and out, so it is perfect.
Also, not many people know about it, but there is a beautiful statue of Gandhi there. To raise your voice to change the world it cannot be better than that!

ウオールストリート。実は、今でもあちこちで続いて
いるんです。これはユニオンスクエア。巨大なチェス
ボードで一際目立っていました。
私が学生の頃は、ウエストビレッジのワシントン・スクエア
パークが、あらゆる政治運動の場となっていましたが、
今はここ、ユニオンスクエアが中心地となっています。
地下鉄の駅もあることで、人のトラフィックが激しいため
何かを唱えるには最適の場所ですね。
そして、あまり知られていませんが、かのガンジーの
像もあるんです。革命を起こすには、持って来いの
スポットです。

Speaking up 声を出すこと

Occupy Wall Street has been growing world wide now. However, there are no rallies here in Japan, and if there are we don't really hear about them. Japan is facing many serious crisis at the moment, but there are no major rallies in public. I hear that Japanese do not like rallies in general. However, everyone complains about the government all the time, but not many people speak up. As I grew up in the US I have always wondered why.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu whom I met once said, "If you are neutral in situation of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." I utterly agree with this famous quote. You cannot stay passive and silent. You must stand up and speak up. That is only a beginning of the change you wish to make. I find the Japanese citizens too passive. Perhaps I am too westernized, but what will we gain by staying silent? Japanese people needs to stand up in a way that has never done before. I would really like to think about it with you.

ウオール街で始まったデモは世界中に広がっています。でも、日本ではデモはあまり見かけません。あったとしても大きなニュースにはならないようです。日本は今、深刻な問題を沢山かかえています。でも、公の場での市民によるデモがあまり無い。少なくとも世界の注目を浴びるようなデモはありません。一般的に日本人はデモが嫌いだと聞いたことがります。政府への不満はピークを超え、文句は絶えませんが、殆どの人が大きく声を上げ行動ととらないようです。アメリカ育ちの私はそれが不思議で仕方がありませんでした。

一度お会いしたことがあるノーベル賞平和賞受賞者のデズモンド・ツツ大司教の「不正な行為が起こった状況の中、あなたが中立な態度をとれば、それは圧制者側に立つことを選んだことになる」という名言があります。私も本当にそう思うのです。受け身のまま黙っていても何も変わらない。声を出して行動をとることは、何かを変えていくための第一歩にすぎません。私には日本人はあまりにも受け身に見えるのです。もしかしたら私がアメリカナイズされているのかも知れませんね。でも、ただ黙っていて一体何が得られるのでしょう？愛する日本が立ち直るには、国民のひとりひとりが、過去にないような形で行動をとって行くことが必要なのかも知れません。皆さんと一緒に考えて良ければ本当に嬉しいです。
