My Favorite Hat

I know, I know... these fur hats from Tibet are beautiful, but politically not cool. I am anti-fur, that is for sure. However, those hats were irresistible, especially since they were gifts to me. I know that that sounds like an excuse, but I simply did not want to waste them. I love animals, therefore, I would never buy furs that have sacrificed animals' lives. When I wear those hats I deeply honor and appreciate their lives.

I don't know who's photo this is, and I found it online. Obama with my favorite Tibetan hat...how funny! (Very well done photoshop!) Washington D.C. could be really cold in the winter, so this hat would be very useful, Mr. President!

Ganesha Chaturthi: great tradition & environmental problem

These striking images of the destroyed Ganesha were taken by my friend Ashish Punj. They are the result of the Hindu festival, Ganesha Chaturthi in Maharashtra, India. This beloved chubby god of wisdom and fortune is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and it's believed that Ganesha bestows his presence to the devotees during the festival that last for 10 days. The devotees give away many statues of Ganesha to the sea as offerings. That is the tradition. In old days the statues were made locally with their mud/clay near their houses. So that the statues naturally went back to earth. Now, they are made of the plaster of Paris that contains highly toxic chemicals and toxic paints at the cheaper costs. Therefore, they have been causing so much pollution for years now. This is devastating to watch. It's a beautiful tradition that people have kept for many years, yet, as our time changes, we are destroying our home. What would Shiva, Parvati say about this irony...? I wonder.

Feeling at home...

Taj Mahal meets Hawaii! I could not believe it when I saw this Spam (photo). I thought that the Muslims didn't eat pork. Actually, I don't really know what's in this Spam (I don't want to know), but I am sure that there is pork in there! I was shocked, over excited, overwhelmed and so happy at this exotic market in La Mesa where my friends Dawn and Graham took me to.

I felt like as if I were in an unknown foreign country. There were all kinds of looking people from all over the world. The middle Eastern, Russian, Indian, Asian... I met the workers who were from Turkey, Kazakhstan, Spain, Iran, then I met customers who were from Palestine, India and Mexico! Although I was used to the biggest cultural diversity in NYC this market was amazing. For example, in NYC there are sections for each ethnicity - the Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn for the middle eastern goods, Jackson Heights for the Desi food and so on. But, here, all in one!

I don't know who she is on the label, but her mother must be so proud...

The display of the market was so corky! Fresh dates next to the evil eyes. I even found the Indian coconut hair oil in the cooking olive oil section!

This milk biscuits are from Eastern Europe. I found my favorite jam from Russia - black currant jam for 4 dollars! I fell in love this market... and I will be coming here every week for sure!

TIBET IN SONG and Ngawang Choephel

Ngawang Choephel. Some people may remember this name from the media around the world. This Tibetan man was a famous political prisoner who almost died in the Chinese prison. He had visited Tibet to interview the Tibetans for his research on the Tibetan traditional songs, and there he was... got arrested by the Chinese police. The international attention on Ngawang was brought by celebrities such as Annie Lennox and Paul Macatney, and eventually, he was released. Some years later Ngawang made this film, TIBET IN SONG, and now it is playing in New York City.

My encounter with Ngawang was a bit unusual. I was at the Jackson Heights subway station after buying some desi goodies and food, and a smiley Tibetan man noticed me somehow. We both thought that we looked familiar, and began talking. Of course we had many mutual friends. It was my first time to meet Ngawang, but I thought that I had seen his face before. It was much later that I realized that he was the famous prisoner that I had seen in many media. I am so proud of his endurance and his commitment. Please go see this amazing film!

One night my husband and I ran into Ngawang on the 7 train again. Since we live in So-Cal now I am hoping that his film will show here in San Diego, too. However, there is no subway system here, so that Ngawang and I won't be able to bump into each other!

Baby Snow Leopard

This is an endangered animal in the Himalayas. A couple of years ago I visited Ladakh hoping to see one of them. Of course I did not. No one has... for many years now. The researchers say that there are only 50 snow leopards left on this earth. Why? The climate change and the fur industry. Today I heard this fantastic news about the baby snow leopard!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8998000/8998044.stm
Hang in there, snow leopards!!!

Who's that girl?

There is no need to say much about this photo... she is just too cute!!! It is a Tibetan nomad girl in Tibet. I don't know who took this photo, therefore I cannot give the credit for it, but this girl just made me smile... big time! May this lovely smile keep bringing light and hope to Tibet.

Spago at last...

For how many years have I known these names? Spago, Chinois, Chaya... During the late 80's those names had brought a new breeze of the California cuisine. Well, I visited LA for the first time ever in my life. Thomas, an old friend from my high school in New York took me to Spago for lunch. My choice was this beets & goat cheese layered salad, and it was beautiful to look at and delicious!

I met Wolfgang Puck in the late 80's in New York with my celebrity chef friend Mark Miller at a party. Surprisingly he was at Spago cooking and greeting people. We chatted a little bit, and I could not believe the fact that he looked exactly the same as 20 years ago. Actually he looked even younger!

UFO?

We saw this flying object (just above the cross) this morning. It kept moving around, disappeared once in a while, then kept coming back. The shape of the object is like a "heart" so perhaps it is a parachute, I thought..., but then, all of a sudden, it disappeared. If it is a parachute or kite you would see it going down somewhere. Well, we didn't. That is really strange! I wonder what it could be... A friend of mine who grew up in Baja says that it is very common to see all sorts of flying objects around Baja and So-Cal. Hummm... the mystery begins!

Chunky Friends

"Hey, where are the beers and chips?" Those chunky pugs were all getting ready for the first football game for the season. Oh my goodness, there were so many pugs at the Balboa dog run this morning.., and no wonder, it was the 'pug meet-up' that happens once a month!

This man who's sitting next to me had many pugs, and they were extremely good-looking.

Our pug, Chai played with so many pugs for a few hours, but his heart still goes to this little French bulldog, Bijou. He has a huge crush on her. She is the second female dog whom Chai ever liked. We have been convinced that Chai is gay, but it seems that he's open to any possibilities!

Starfish

When I see something like this it truly makes me believe in God. Look at this cactus! It's unbelievable. As I was walking my dog yesterday I ran into this starfish cactus. I could not believe my eyes. They are huge and eerie. I took my iphone 4, and tried to photograph it. Of course my iphone camera would not work at such a moment! My dog was going to the bathroom as I was rushing to fix my iphone. I got nervous and left - because I was in someone's garden! So, I found those photos online after typing in, "starfish cactus." It was a random guess for the name, and voila! I was right :)

The big test!

OMG, I studied a lot for two days. This is all I read over and over for two days: California Drivers Handbook. Since the Cal. rules are a bit different from the one in NY I really had to study. I took the test this morning at DMV, and passed! Thank you, thank you, everyone! There is something I want to say to all the drivers in Sol-Cal. You guys drive too fast! The Handbook says that the speed limit on freeways is 65 mph. Do you hear me? 65 mph! You guys drive at 80, 90 or more, and that is freakin' crazy!!! So, please, I beg you. Please slow down a little, dudes!

More Cars...

Is this photo of a horrific traffic real? Yes. It is the road from Beijing to China. How HORRIBLE!!!
We, humans have done enough to damage to this earth, and the Chinese will do the final push to end our planet. They are so eager to make money... that is fine, but how about the pollution? They should drive hybrid cars and electric cars, if they have to drive.

On the other hand, we had to purchase the second car yesterday. That is the tragic side of living in California. We need to drive everywhere. I hate it. I miss the dirty and smelly New York subways. They are so much better for the environment. So, our first car was a hybrid, and not the second is a Mini Cooper... because it is small and it uses such a little fuel. We wanted to purchase the electric Mini Cooper, but they are not available in the US. How sad is that? We should have more electric cars here. That is for sure!

Lost Buddha

If I were a super wealthy billionaire I would be collecting numerous Buddha statues from the Gandhara (the Kushan period.) Those exotic statues that are exquiste mixtures of East and West have been spread out all over the world to be collected and exhibited. This torso (photo) has just arrived to the San Diego Museum of Art. I cannot help imagining what kind of head it used to have... and where could the head be now? I can wonder about those things for days and nights.

I have posted this photo of the Buddha head before. I spent years looking for this head. I have asked the numbers of famous scholars and researchers, experts, curators and professors all over the world, but no one seemed to know where this head is. Some said that it had been destroyed most likely. How sad is that..? This Buddha head is unbelievably special to me. I don't know why, but every time I look at it it moves my heart so deeply. Is it possible that I was the artist who had sculpted this masterpiece??? ;)-
