A Foolish Custom 愚かな習慣

Socal is getting cold that you need sweaters and jackets now. There is one thing I don't understand, and I wrote about it two years ago right after moving to Socal from New York.

People in Socal are so friendly and nice, but for some reasons they do not seem to accept that fact that it does get cold in Socal in winter. Just like this photo above people want to wear tank tops and dine outside. On that day I was wearing a down jacket because I t was really cold outside. Those ladies came to the restaurant where there were so many tables available inside, asked the waiter to put on the outdoor heater and dined outside... without a jacket, right next to the heater.

くらい、かなり寒くなって来ました。２年前にもブログで
書いたのですが、どうしても「理解できない」ことが
あります。
南カリフォルニアの人たちはフレンドリーで
明るくてステキな人たちなのですが、なぜか「外が寒い」
という事実を受け入れようとしません。上の写真のように、
外がひどく寒くても、タンクトップを着て、断固として
セーターを着ようとしない。その上、アウトドアヒーター
をつけるように店員に要求するんです。私はこの時、
ダウンジャケットを着ていました。店内に沢山テーブルが
あったのにも関わらず、この女性たちは外に座り、ヒーター
の横でタンクトップを着て食事をしたかったのですね。

I see this kind of people everywhere in Socal in winter. They are all in tank tops or half-sleeve T-shirts, and dine outside right next (or under) the outdoor heaters while there are many indoor tables available.

Those outdoor heaters usually generate with natural gas or petroleum. No matter what kind of energy they use it is bad for the environment. Especially petroleum is awful. According to some scientists, if you use 13-kg-bottle of petroleum it releases 38-kg CO2 that is equivalent to 4526 Range Rovers!

So, I am always mad at those idiotic people in winters in Socal. I cannot like the people who have the need to expose their bodies in cold winters by wasting energy and polluting the air. I find that behavior extremely ego-centric, selfish and shallow. Pathetic.

Here is my message to them:
Winter is cold, and that is the natural way. If you are cold wear a jacket. Accept the fact that
it is cold outside, and just enjoy the coldness!

Please forgive me. I have written this blog today while I am still so mad about those idiots.
However, please don't get me wrong - I am not criticizing everyone in Socal. This is just one
particular behavior that I cannot stand.

I'm going home in New York tomorrow. It is already super cold there, and I am getting ready with my 700 down coat, hats and gloves!

こんな光景はどこでも見ます。みんな半袖やタンクトップで
外でヒーターの下で食事をする。別に室内にテーブルが
無いわけではないのです。

このアウトドアヒーターは、通常ペトロリウムか、天然ガスで
作動されます。どれにせよ、環境に良いわけがない。特に
ペトロリウムはひどい。例えば１３キロのペトロリウムのボトル
が使用されると３８キロのCO２が出る。これは4526台分の
レンジローヴァーが出す量と同じなんです。

なので、私は冬になると、いつもムカついています。そこまで
してタンクトップを着て外で食事したい南カリフォルニア人間
の行動が理解できないし、腹が立ちますし、好きになれません。
自己中心的で横柄な態度だと思います。

寒い時はジャケットを着る。室内で食事をする。
冬が来たら冬が来たことを受け入れ、楽しめ！

ごめんなさい、今日はムカつきながら書いてしまいました、、。
あ、でも誤解しないで下さいネ。これはあくまでもひとつの
行動のことであって、南カリフォルニアの人の全てを批判して
いるのではないのです。。。

明日からニューヨークに帰省します。あちらはもう零下。
７００ダウンのロングコートや帽子に手袋。たっぷり着込み
ますよ～！

Double Rainbow 二重の虹

SoCal is shining sunny as usual. When I arrived a double rainbow welcomed
me home. Wow! My baby tomatoes have grown high (almost my height) with
a couple of green fruits, and my succulents have grown gigantic that made me
freak out. I am off to cold New York in a few days, and I'd love to relax a little
in this paradise...! although I know that I won't ;(

一ヶ月ぶりの南カリフォルニアは、相変わらず太陽がさんさんと
輝いています。私が到着すると、なんと二重の虹が
お出迎え。わーお！　育てていたトマトは、なんと私の背丈くらい
にまで成長し、青い実を２つつけて待っていてくれました。
カクタスたちも巨大になっていて、ドキッとしたほど。
またすぐ寒いニューヨークへ発ちますが、数日間は
この楽園でのんびりしたいものです、、、！（できないけど。笑）

Perfect weather of SoCal 南カリフォルニアの完璧な天気

The weather in San Diego this spring/summer has been amazingly great. It's been sunny, dry and
gorgeous. Usually in June there is a gloomy period called, "June gloom" that it rains lightly everyday, but this year we did not even have it. As a summer person I am loving it! We cleaned up our terrace table outside that we did not use for a while, and began having meals outside. It's just heavenly. I know why San Diego is called "the finest city in America."

今年の春／夏のサンディエゴのお天気は最高です。毎年、南カリフォルニアでは「ジューングルーム」と呼ばれる雨期のような時期があって、毎日どんより雲に小雨が降ったりするのですが、今年はそんな時期も無くて、毎日ゴージャス！夏人間の私には最高！なので、しばらく使ってなかったテラステーブルもお掃除して、また外で食事をし始めました。天国のようです。ああ、だからやっぱりここサンディエゴは「アメリカで最も美しい街」と呼ばれているのですネ〜。

SoCal colors 南カリフォルニアの色

I love colors, and there are lots of them here in SoCal. The first thing I noticed when I landed here in San Diego was the color of the Sun light. It is different from the east coast. It is more intense, fluorescent-like and has more of the blue tone. The colors of the fruits are more vivid, too. My daily fun is to go to the Wholefoods which is only 2 minutes walk from my house, to shop and to just look at the beautiful local produce. Those California oranges are so sweet and juicy, and the local veggies are so fresh and so lovely to look at!



私は色が大好き。ここ南カリフォルニアには色とりどりです。初めてサンディエゴに来た時気づいたのは、太陽の色でした。東海岸と全く違うんです。もっと強烈で、蛍光灯のようなブルー系の色。ここでは果物の色も鮮やかです。私の毎日の楽しみは、家から歩いて２分のところにある「ホールフーズ」マーケットに行くこと。お買い物をする時もあるし、ただ美しいプロデュースを見るだけの時もあります。カリフォルニアオレンジは甘くてジューシー！ローカルでとれたお野菜も、この写真のとおり新鮮で綺麗なんです。



I call this the "green & yellow" section of the small and round watermelons, papayas and pineapples... they smell so sweet!

ここを私は「緑と黄色のセクション」と呼んでいます。小さくて丸いスイカ、パパイヤにパイナップル、、、近寄ると甘い香りが、、、！




The Valentine's Day bouquet here is also very SoCal - filled with lots of tropical flowers!

ヴァレンタインズデー用のブーケも南カリフォルニアスタイル。トロピカルのお花でいっぱい！




This is the pink and purple section of the lovely hydrangeas. Those flowers have some magic over me for some reasons. They always make me feel "nostalgic" and make me want to buy them.
Colors are fun. Colors make you feel happy. Colors are everywhere if you look carefully. Enjoy colors, and thank you, God, for creating all those gorgeous colors in SoCal!

色は楽しいですね。色はハッピーな気分にしてくれる。ちょっと気をつけて見渡せば、色はそこら中にありますよ！
