You Create Your Own Happiness

What a catchy title that is - You create your own happiness! It sounds like a "best-seller-wanna-be" book title, doesn't it? Yet, it was only a while ago that I truly realized that "happiness is a choice." For forty-something years I had had this abstract notion that "happiness comes to you one day."

Every day I think about "what is happiness" and "what is life?" My head understands clearly that "you are the creator of your own happiness," but I tend to get sucked into this illusion that "I will be happy if I had that," or "I will be happy if he does this" and so on.

The photo above was taken during the brain experiment of a meditating Tibetan monk (I think that it was done at MIT some years ago) and they rocked the world by presenting the test result that meditation affects the brain cells tremendously, and it creates "happiness" or "happy thoughts and happy emotions." The medical world also released the test results that meditation is extremely effective to heal depression.
Today, we all know that meditation is good for relaxation. Many schools, hospitals and companies promote daily meditation programs and sessions.

Meditation stimulates the alpha and theta brainwaves that make you feel relaxed. Even for five minutes a day meditating can help you feel relaxed. A few years ago I attended a renowned scientist's lecture in New York, and it was so fascinating to hear him say that the brain cells that feel "happiness" are in the same area that the brain cells that feel "depression."

I've been practicing meditation for many years now, but I still feel like a beginner. I have never experienced any "blissful moments of enlightenment" or "space of emptiness" that people tend to fantasize about. However, my meditation teachers say that it is perfectly all right. "When your mind goes all over the place it is ok. Simply bring your focus back to your breath, and just start from the beginning again. That is the important thing."

Perhaps you can start meditating for five minuets every day. Just sit comfortably, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. You probably start thinking about many things and forget to focus on breathing right away. "Oh, I have to call my sister" or "What should I make for dinner tonight?" You may go on and on..., but it is ok. It is very "normal" to be thinking all the time, and it is extremely hard to simply stop thinking. It is smart to throw out the idea that you can stop thinking completely one day soon - just because you are meditating -  because it will not happen so easily.

Rather than battling with that, you can just go back to your breathing again. The key is not to get attached to our thoughts. Let them come and go. Simple as that. Meditation is just a repetition of this simple act - focus on your breathing, again and again. What a low-key activity that is!
Yet, when you practice meditation things do change. Slowly, but surely. It is absolutely true.

Yesterday, I went to my favorite meditation garden in Encinitas, and meditated for a while. This heavenly beautiful garden is originally supposed to be Hindu, but it has a little section with St. Francis picture, and it is a peaceful and charming place beyond all the religions.

We create our own happiness.
Meditation is an amazing tool to help create happiness
within us, and all we need is our mind, enthusiasm and breaths!

Meditation at the Times Square

Hundreds gathered at the Times Square the other day to celebrate the summer solstice. This T.S. event was sponsored by the companies such as Yoga Journal and Athleta, and its catchphrase was, "You can meditate on a top of a quite mountain, but can you meditate in the middle of a noisy city?"

To me meditation is something very personal and done privately alone, but this kind of event may be fun (?), I guess. It is beneficial as long as it brings some comfort to the stressed-out New Yorkers :)
I only meditate in a group if there is a teacher there to learn from. Meditation is about looking within. It is a never-ending struggle, battle, comfort and liberation!

Meditating at the Swami Beach

Now I am back in SoCal after a while, and the first place I want to go was the Swami Beach in Encinitas. As a beach bum I've seen so many beaches that are called the most beautiful beaches around the world, but this Swami Beach is definitely on the top of my list. It is not only just beautiful, but it has an unique ambiance there... some kind of a special aura. Also the Meditation Garden at the Ashram is exquisite. To meditate here is my favorite thing to do... it is certainly heavenly!

A Day with Thik Nhat Hahn

I'd always wanted to meet him, and my dream came true on my birthday weekend. This renowned Vietnamese Buddhist monk, peace activist and a poet who was nominated for a Nobel Peace Laureate in 1967 usually lives in France, but he visits his monastery in Escondido a few times a year. So my husband and I joined him on Sunday for a walking meditation retreat.

We got up at sunrise, and headed to the mountain. It's usually a quiet and remote place, but the monastery that day was so crowded with many cars including fancy sports cars. Once you park your car you have to walk up on the hill to get to the main temple. The estate is huge, and the monks and nuns who live here walk everywhere every day.

There were about 800 hundred or more at the day retreat. Many came from overseas to be with this 86-yr-old Zen master who still looks like 50. Thay (his followers call him Thay - it means "master" in Vietnamese) was a soft-spoken tiny man, and he was wearing a brown thick sweater, a brown wool scarf and a brown down jacket. It was 85F outside. That gave me a sense that he might be frail. We, all 800 of us, began walking slowly with him.

"Breath in, breath out. "You focus on your breathing, and be mindful. Every step you take you tell yourself, "I am here," and breath in, breath out. The master taught us.

After one hour and a half-waking meditation we all went back to the main temple, and listened to Thay's dharma teaching. He spoke very softly in a perfect English with a slight French accent. I must say that it was so soothing that I fell asleep here and there! After they offered us lunch (Vietnamese style French baguette sandwiches) many of us had a nap in the main temple. It was so peaceful, quiet and lovely. I fell asleep, too, and that is a miracle - Usually I can only sleep in my own bed!

At 2 o'clock, one of Thay's chief disciples taught us "deep relaxation technique" ..., and can you see how we did it? I think we did pretty well! lol It was based on the body scan meditation technique, and by the time she was leading us to scan our eyes and noses I was in a deep sleep. I woke up because of the loud snoring from the person next to me. Surprisingly my head was so clear, and I was feeling so good. This is why people like retreats. It was a perfect day with a great master, wonderful monks and nuns, nice people in a gorgeous natural environment. However, as Thay said repeatedly, you must meditate every day. You can meditate anywhere at any time. You don't need anything, any tools. You just need your own mind, that's it. It was another good reminder that I must meditate more often... for my own wellness :)
