Recently I had an opportunity to be invited to have an amazing lunch at Le
Bernardin. Needless to say that it was heavenly delicious and mind blowing. When my parents lived in NYC for many years my Dad had an office in the Radio City Music Hall building and he dined at Le
Bernardin very often. I joined him a few times and I must say that this
restaurant is really the best of all. They have kept its top quality for many years and it is not easy to do. This photo is the star chef and the co-owner of Le

Since I am helping the Office of Tibet organize a private fund raise luncheon with The
Dalai Lama in May at Le
Bernardin I have been going to the
restaurant to have meetings. One day Eric generously invited me to have a gorgeous lunch there while I was working in his office. What a lucky day it was! Thank god that I skipped my breakfast that morning. The appetizer I chose was this grilled octopus with fermented black bean sauce and pears. Oh my god, it was the best octopus that I ever had... it literally melted in my mouth like butter. I was already full with the octopus, but the black bass arrived... how could I pass this fresh master piece?
Then this first dessert arrived. There was this melting fluffy sweet cream and chocolate inside!
Did I tell you that I have two stomachs? One extra for sweets. This dark chocolate tart with peanuts and ice cream was so gorgeous. I do not have words to describe how good this piece was. I wondered if I could come back just to have this dessert with my vegetarian husband who loves chocolates as I do. The lunch took a full hour. I was planning to get a sandwich from a deli across the street and eat it in 10 minutes. What a sweet
surprise, indeed!
ダライラマのアメリカ代表に頼まれて、５月にダライラマ法王とのプライベートランチョンをオーガナイズしている私です。場所はニューヨーク、いやアメリカナンバーワンとも言われるフレンチ／シーフードレストラン「ル・ベルナルダン」。ここのオーナーシェフ、エリック・リペールは私の友人でもあり、ダライラマ法王の大ファン。ランチョンがファンドレイズだと相談すると、全てをただで引き受けてくれるとのこと、、。夢のようなオファーでした。通常このレストランでパーティをすると、それはそれは高額なコストがかかるのです。ダライラマ大ファンのエリックは、「全てまかせて」と。素晴らしい！
５月とはいえ、準備は山ほどあります。何度もレストランに足を運び、打ち合わせなどをします。ある日、朝からエリックのオフィスで会議をしていた私に「ランチでも食べて来てね」とエリックが特別に私を招待してくれました。
両親がNYに長年住んでいた頃は、父のオフィスはロックフェラーセンターのラジオシティミュージックホールのビルにありました。ル・ベルナルダンに近いし、父はしょっちゅうこのレストランで食事をしていた常連でした。私も何度か父にジョインしたことがあります。
こんなに長い間、クオリティを保ちながらトップの座を維持しているル・ベルナルダン。ほんと凄いです。
特別席に坐り、まずはタコのグリル、梨と黒豆ソースのアペタイザーをいただきました。口の中でタコがとろけて、まじで人生で最高のタコグリルだと感動。クリーミーなブリオシュもここのオリジナルで、パンは控えようと思いつつ、つい平らげてしまった。そしてブラックバス。なんともフレッシュな黒鱒でした。そして登場したのが、卵の殻の中に入ったふわふわしたクリーム。チョコレートもまじっていた。それからデザート。オーマイガーです。ダークチョコレートのタルトでしたが、もう死ぬかと思うくらい美味しかった。これらの素晴らしい品々を表現するボキャブラリーを持ち合わせていない私、こめんなさい〜！
向かいのデリでサンドイッチでも買って１０分ですませようと思っていたランチは一時間以上かかりました。なんてスイートなサプライズ！ありがとう、エリック！
ウイーンに住んでいる親友カリンがNYに遊びに来ました。普段はお土産をお願いしない私ですが、今回はつい、「ホテルザッハーのトルテ買って来て〜」と、おねだり。本場のが食べたくて仕方無かったのです。遠慮して「一番小さいのをネ」と頼んだのに、カリンは大きなのを持って来てくれました。綺麗なパッケージ、、、。開けるのにしばらく時間がかかったなあ。木の箱のふたを開けると、おお〜！うっとりするようなタルトです。さっそくカットして食べようと思ったら、フレッシュクリームが無いことに気づいた私。クリーム無しのザッハートルテなんて考えられません。。。でも、買いに行くまで待ち切れず、食べてしまいました。ああ〜幸せ。カリン、本当にダンケシェーン！
