New York and Celebrities
I went to see Prince at the Hard Rock Hotel. I saw him at the Madison Square Garden back in the 80's, and at the Budokan in Tokyo in the 90's. Once at Nell's (a famous night club in NYC during the 80's) I met him in person. My boy friend at that time says that I danced with him on the dace floor, but I cannot remember it. All I remember is that he was standing alone by the wall without any body staring at me... so intensely like this photo that I got scared!
No one came up to him to talk at Nell's, and after a while, he left to another venue to give a concert.
It's not rare to see many celebrities if you've lived in NYC for 33 years. However, the New Yorkers don't really make a scene when they see them - there is this unspoken rule about dealing with celebrities here. The New Yorkers keep it cool, and they hardly come up to them to talk to them or to ask for their autographs in order to give them space and respect. So if you see people coming up to the celebrities they are tourists from out of town usually. Lol
So, how do the New Yorkers behave when they see celebrities? I shall tell you a few examples:
One night I was dining with my father at a very trendy restaurant in Upper East side. Tom Cruise and his wife at that time, Nicole Kidman came in. Everyone in the restaurant noticed that, but no one made any big deal out of it. Then, I saw the two women dining next to us did this - they put on their glasses (to see better) quietly, and dropped their napkins on purpose. "Oh, I dropped my napkin!" they mumbled, and as they were picking up the napkin they glanced at the movie star couple.
This is one technique that the New Yorkers use often. There is another one - you say to your dinner companions, "Excuse me, but I must go to the bathroom," or "Excuse me, I have to go and make a phone call," and while you walk towards the bathroom you glace at the celebrities.
New Yorkers always check out the celebrities in a cool manner. Yet, they don't really brag about it either.
"Oh, by the way, I saw Tom Cruise at a restaurant last night." You just mention it as an addition to your other conversation, that's all.
I am one of those cool New Yorkers. I've met so many celebrities over the years, but never took one photo. If I have I'd have a thick photo book by now!

China Bombs Ancient Buddhas
China soon will be bombing one of the most exquisite ancient Buddhist ruins in Mes
Aynak, the central Afghanistan. In the past this incredible heritage survived from the Taliban's destruction on the Buddhist sites, and there still some Buddhist monasteries and thousands of
Buddhist statues exist today.

I love the Buddhist arts from all over the world, and especially I have a sweet spot for
the Afghan Buddhas. I've traveled around the world to see those breathtakingly
beautiful statues including the ones from the Gandara/Kushan era. They are so different
from any other Buddhist arts having been influenced by Greek, Persian, Roman, Hindu,
Islamic and the Buddhist, and have the most unique marriage of the East and West.
The Taliban destroyed the great Buddha statues in the past, and now it is the
Chinese.... only for a tiny percentage of exclusive members.

King of Snack
We can get kale, the king of vegetables, anywhere in the states, but it's rather a rare vegetable in Japan. The Japanese may know kale as "green juice," but hardly eat them at home. Kale is a kind
of cabbage family, and it has a deep distinguished taste.
Kale chips are very popular snack items in America today... at least in big cities. A bag of five or
six pieces of kale chips may cost up to 7 dollars! Since I can get so much fresh organic kale at the farmers market I make my own kale chips at home - I put kale on the baking sheet, sprinkle some extra virgin oil and the Himalayan pink salt, and bake them in the oven. You can sprinkle some Parmesan cheese and chili if you like. They are so crispy, and remind me of the texture of nori, the dried seaweeds. They taste really good!
There are several kinds of kale. The one in the middle (photo above) is a flat leafy type,
and the one on the left is called, the Tuscan Kale, and they have curly leaves. They taste different, too. Dr. Andrew Weil's signature dish, The Tuscan Kale Salad is one of my everyday dinner items. You can cut up the kale, and mix with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese and salt & pepper. You can put lots of chili if you like. Let it sit for a while until the kale becomes soft.
It's getting harder and harder to get safe and healthy food today, and this is a very healthy and
nutritious snack you can make at home. You certainly won't feel sick and guilty afterwards as eating the junk food!

My Darling
Today I'd like to share an episode of my husband. I found several gift cards of a famous
coffee chain store on his desk the other day, so I asked him what those were for. He said,
"I saw this homeless woman trying to buy a cup of coffee with a gift card, but denied
because there was no money left on the card. Obviously she must have found the card
somewhere. This made me decide to carry some gift cards so that I can give to homeless
people who want to have a cup of coffee or tea here and there..."
I was so surprised to hear this because I had no idea that he had been doing this. It's a small
act that won't change any big social problems of our society, but it is certainly a sweet act that
anyone can do every day... and he is actually doing it. Such a wonderful living example was
right here next to me. How about that!?
What a sweet person he is! But of course, he is the man I chose, indeed :)

Cleansing Puja
I welcomed a Tibetan monk to my studio the other day with my signature chai. He had fled Tibet some years ago and now resides in the states.
The reason of his visit was to give me a personal puja. In my 20's I often went to see many psychics and astrologers. Since I grew up in a family who saw things in a scientific way I was never exposed to anything metaphysical growing up, so I became very curious about things that could not be explained with scientific formulas. However, during my 30's I realized that "Having psychics tell me about me" did not necessarily made me happier. So I just stopped going to see them completely.
Two years ago when my husband and I moved to Socal I met a renowned Tibetan astrologer. I had no particular problems at that time, so I decided to have my chart done by him. I thought that since I was not searching for any particular answers or outcome I would not be affected by his reading. Also, as a freelance artist I wanted to support another freelance individual in my new city. It was nothing more than a friendly gesture.
So he did my chart, and I had a reading.
Hum... The Tibetan astrologer told me a couple of things that bothered me.
I went to his office in a whimsical mood, and came home with a heavy heart.
I regretted that I had had a reading... (actually, I regretted a big time!)
There is a famous quote by Lord Buddha:
"Things will be solved if they are meant to be solved, and things won't
get solved if they are meant not to be solved. Therefore, to worry is an
useless action in either ways."
Then, why did I have my reading done? If "knowing" won't do any good
why bother? As my nature is to worry I again confirmed the fact that this is
not for me - psychic readings, astrology readings and all that stuff!!!
Two years have passed, and this reading was still bothering me, so when
I met this Tibetan monk I told him about my concern.
"Don't worry. I will do the puja for you," he told me.
I don't even know if this puja will work or not, but I swore myself to
let go of this heaviness in my heart and believe that I could do it
with the puja.
The cleansing puja was beautiful. I was not even sad or anything, but
tears began to roll down on my cheeks. I felt as if my heart was having
a fresh shower to wash away the old dirt.
For many centuries people have believed in and relied on astrology, and
I am sure that there are many significant elements and the certain truth in it.
Yet, I promised myself not to have another reading just because it does not
work for me. All I can do is to try to treasure every day, to thank,
to be kind, to eat healthy, to take care of the environment, to help others
and to be compassionate.
My teacher in India also said go me,
"Rima, all men have the ability to change their paths. Even though
the stars may indicate certain outcomes you have the ability to change
that. There is always a solution in life!"
