Silk Road, Upper West Side アッパーウエストのシルクロード

We went to see the "Silk Road" Exhibition at the Museum of Natural History yesterday. For some reason when I hear the word "silk road" my heart always gets restless. I have been drawn to the camels, the deserts, the moon and the travelers... ever since I was a child. The exhibition was rather small, but very charming. It is perfect for children. Then we walked across the Central Park. It was getting dark and the soft moon light was hitting the city. The walk felt long... as if I were traveling through the silk road.

自然博物館で開催されている「シルクロード」展を見て来ました。「シルクロード」という言葉を聞くたびに、心がそわそわする私。子供の頃から、ラクダ、月、砂漠、旅人などに惹かれてきました。もしかしたら前世でシルクロードをうろうろしていたのかも知れません。展示会は小さな規模でしたが、チャーミングなものでした。子供が喜ぶ感じかな。その後は、セントラルパークを歩いてイーストサイドまで横切りました。よく歩くルートなのに、なぜだかすごく長く感じました。まるでシルクロードみたいに、、、。夕暮れ時で、月がマンハッタンをぼんやりと照らしていました。

My recent addiction これ無しではちょっと、、！

I just love this stuff!!! I have been addicted to horse radish for several months now. When I first came to the states as a child I did not know what the horse radish was... it is not a common item in Japan although some farmers in Hokkaido have begun growing them. One day back in spring, I happened to buy a "horse radish hummus" at the Celler in Long Island City. I fell in love with its unique taste and kept buying it everyday! Then, one day, they completely stopped selling it. I got so 'agitated' and 'angry' (sign of addiction!) and could not stop thinking about the horse radish hummus. I went to the Whole Foods and they did not have it. So I just bought a bottle of horse radish and mixed with a regular hummus. It was that simple...why did not I think about that sooner...?!? I put it on everything - sandwitches, grains, crackers... sometimes I just eat it as it is. I thank God for creating this!

春からはまっているのが、このホースラディッシュ。アブラナ科の一種で、日本では西洋ワサビと呼ばれています。私が思うには、ワサビというよりは、大根に近い舌触り。よくローストビーフなどの付け合わせとして出てきますね。渡米したばかりの子供の頃、なんてまずいものだろうと思ったのに、最近は「中毒」になってしまった！サンドイッチはもちろん、玄米とも一緒に食べたりしています！そのままスプーンですくって食べたりもします。それ程好きなんです〜！写真の瓶が３日くらいでなくなってしまうんですよ。

Back in NYC! 久々のニューヨーク

Oh my goodness, I have not written anything here for a long time! My stay in Tokyo was great - being with my parents, seeing friends, eating good food everyday and having my solo-exhibition!
Oh, one more... seeing the Dalai Lama again in Tokyo, too! On the way back to NYC I watched "Julie and Julia." It was a cute movie and it was shot in the Long Island City! I could not wait to walk my dog near the pier (see the photos above)...! I just love it here. Welcome home, Rima!

一ヶ月以上ぶりです！笑　久々のニューヨークは思ったより暖かで、ホッとしました。東京からNYCへと向かう飛行機で見た映画「ジュリーとジュリア」は、私が住むロングアイランドシティがロケで、懐かしかったです。戻った翌日、チャイを連れていつものお散歩コースを楽しみました。川沿いの桟橋（上の写真）です。夜景も見事でしょう？！ホントにここが大好き！もう、どこにも移りたくなりです〜！

What an amazing human being. The Dalai Lama. My inspiration. My guru. Today I was so fortunate to have an official audience with His Holiness. I talked about my next children's book project for the Tibetan refugee children in exile and told him that I wanted to make a book on the environmental issue, especially focused on the Himalayan ecology. He told me to come and join him at the environmental conference in India. He also said to me that it is very, very important to educate young children about the environmental issue. I remember the melting glacier in Ladakh last year. Time is running out for the earth... and for Tibet, too.

今日は、NY訪問中のダライラマ法王と正式謁見をする幸運に恵まれました。今まで何度もお会いしたことがありましたが、正式な謁見は初めてで、緊張しました。旦那さんと、カメラマンの女性とビデオカメラの４人でしたが、謁見のお部屋に猊下が招いて下さると、カメラマンとビデオマンは、お付きの人にすぐに部屋を出る様に言われ、旦那と私と猊下と秘書の４人だけになりました。緊張して言いたい事の半分も言えませんでしたが、どうにか、きちんと話すことができました。「ブックスフォーチルドレン」の次の絵本についてお話しました。「ヒマラヤの環境について教育する絵本を考えています」とお伝えすると、とても熱心に「それは、とても、とても大切なことです。もうすぐインドにいらっしゃい」とおっしゃいました。環境をテーマにしたコンフェレンスでお話されるようで、私も招いて下さったのです。

King Kong, Come back! キングコングよ、戻ってきて〜！

昨夜からアメリカのシンボルとも言えるエンパイアステートビルが真っ赤に点灯されました。これは、中国共産党６０周年を祝ってです。いくらチャイニーズが多いNYとはいえ、何も共産主義を祝う様なことをしなくても良いのに、、と、多くのニューヨーカーたちが感じています。メディアでも大騒ぎ。もちろんSFTを始めとする大勢が、抗議ラリーを開催しました。朝も夜もエンパイアの前でデモ。これもすぐにNYタイムズなどのメディアでとりあげられました。
今週はダライラマもNY入りします。こんな光景、見せたくないなあ、、、。溜息。

I could not look at the Empire State Building last night from my window. It is lit up in red and yellow.... to celebrate the Communist China's 60th Anniversary. "What were they thinking?," many New Yorkers have been questioning. Perhaps they did it for the Chinese immigrants in New York and America..., but why celebrate the communism??? Many are extremely disturbed, I read in media today. The photo above has been taken by the SFT member. I do not know how he did it, but it looks great to see "Free Tibet" !

One life, One meeting 一期一会

これは秋の新宿伊勢丹での１６回目の新作個展で発表する作品の一枚。特別プレビューです！
今年のテーマは「ハピネス」。カオスの渦に巻かれる今日の世界。本当のしあわせって何だろうと、考えさせられました。この絵は、いつものように夢で見たビジョンです。ふと、「一期一会」という言葉が浮かんできました。英語で何というのだろう？と思って、旦那さんに聞いたら、「う〜ん、わかんない」だって。英語だと、こういうことを表現する文化が無かったのなあ、、、と思っていた数日後。ある雑誌に「一期一会」というタイトルの記事が目に飛び込んできました。もちろん英語で書かれたアメリカの雑誌なのだけど、ちゃんと日本語で書いてあった。記事を読むところ、「ワンライフ、ワンミーティング」と言うのそうです。なるほど、、、感動しました。この言葉の奥深さをあらためて感じたんです。

This is one of my latest work that I will be exhibiting in October in Tokyo. This will be my 16th solo exhibition at the Isetan Art Gallery, and this year's theme is "Happiness." (What the heck is happiness?, I have been asking myself for all my life.) As I draw the visions I see in my dreams this image came into my dream the other day. I titled it, "One life, One meeting." It is an old Buddhist word in Japan. I just love that word - it has such deep and profound meaning.

Book Reading on Oct.3 子供の絵本読み聞かせ

I am invited to read my children's books at the Tibetan Festival on October 3. It is a whole day festival with food, dance, art, crafts and prayers at the Jacques Machais Museum. My reading will start from 3pm and we will read in English and Tibetan. Lama Pema Wangdak who received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor this year will read the Tibetan part. １０月３日土曜日の午後３時から、ジャックマーシエ美術館にて、絵本の読み聞かせをします。
読む絵本は、「ワンダーガーデン」と「ワンダートーク」。英語とチベット語で読みます。とはいえ、私のチベット語は悲惨なもの。そこで、今年たいへん名誉あるエリスアイランドメダルオブオナーを受賞なさったチベット僧侶、ペマワンダックさんにチベット語で読んでいただきます。日本人のお客様がいらしたら、日本語でも読みますよ〜！このペマさんは、実は私の「ワンダートーク」のお話を教えて下さった方でもあります。チベット料理、ダンス、クラフト、アート、、、と盛りだくさんのチベット祭り。NY近辺にお住まいの方、是非、ご参加ください！
