The end of Earth and Aliens?

Since San Diego Zoo is open at night during the summer we strolled down to see "Baby Frank," the baby gorilla. Again, he was not there in the "display," and my husband was disappointed. So he wanted to go see the elephants instead. I just wanted to go home. I hate zoos. I never liked them even as a child. It breaks my heart to see animals in the cages looking sad and lost. After seeing the depressed elephants we got really depressed. So we went to the restaurant in the zoo to have dinner. The paper place mat (photo above) said that we should save energy to reduce global warming, so that the polar bears won't have to lose their home. It was a good gesture, and I hoped that everyone would read this and take action.

On the way home we saw this poster. Hum... aliens must have funny looking toes. Who knows, in their planets they put humans in the zoo display. Zoos offer so many good things, such as preserving endangered species, researching, etc. However, I still cannot like them. I will never go to the zoo again.

My Royal Door

Isn't this stunning? Gorgeous!? It is just exquisite. This "door" finally arrived yesterday. It's a custom-made-door-table from India, and I placed an order back in May! I was told that it might take a couple of months, but hey, I knew that it would take longer than that. It is a hand-made table to be shipped from India. Of course it would take more than two months!

Needless to say that this beautiful table is totally unpractical. The surface is uneven so that you cannot put anything on it. The craftsmanship of the brass work is breathtakingly lovely that you don't want to touch it. It is more like an art piece to me. Then why did I purchased this all the way from India and waited for it for 4 months? I have no idea. Call me a greedy fool :)

Two magical words 2

Our pug Chai has become a California dog. He loves the beach, and he wants to be a life guard when he grows up. His pace has been slowing down, too... like the Californians. Everyday Chai and I use the stairs instead of the elevator. After a long walk the last thing Chai wants to do is to walk up the stairs. He just sits there and would not move... So, what do I say? Always those two words: "Daddy" and "Dinner." Chai loves his daddy (my husband) more than anything in the world... and "dinner" means "any food" that he would not want to miss. So, to motivate this little friend I say those magical words to him. Then, his eyes light up and he starts to dash up on the stairs! How simple is that?

Go Aamir!

I knew it! I knew that my Aamir Khan would do this! He is helping the school in Leh, Ladakh. This school appears in his movie, "3 Idiots" when he plays a scientist who runs a school in Leh. Aamir Khan is my favorite actor, and just to know that he's gone there to cheer up the victims in Ladakh makes me smile. My Aamir in my favorite place... what a wonderful news!

I prefer sweets

Every day I pass this hut, "All Green" when I walk my dog, and have been wondering what it is. Finally I went closer to the building (the hut) the other day, and found out that they sell "weeds"!

It's really a small hut with no windows. I did not go inside, but I could see a man over the counter. It's funny -the parking lot is huge and there are always many cars parked here! I hear that you can buy weeds for your medical reasons. Of course you need a prescription from your doctor!

Well, since I don't smoke nor do any kind of drugs my interests are more towards sweets. This devil at the Bakery and Ciel was so huge that I got full by just looking at it. It was called chocolate something, but it was like a French version of Babka. Needless to say that it was delicious.

Missing Ladakh

Ladakh was definitely the most magnificent and special place ever I have visited in my life. It's been two years since I landed on that old kingdom up in the Himalayas, but still today I tear up when I think about that wonderful place. People were so kind, warm and humble, and they taught me so much without any preaching.

The current disaster of the mudslide and heavy rain in Ladakh is breaking my heart. I was able to reach some of my Ladakhi friends in Leh, but still cannot reach some of them. I do not think that their housed that are made of mud would survive.

Many old monasteries from the 11the centuries (or older) were breathtakingly beautiful. I just keep praying that they have survived. "Nothing is permanent," Buddha said. I know, I know..., but those old monasteries were unbelievably exquisite.

May those who are suffering in Ladakh, Tibet and Pakistan, with disastrous mudslide and flood be safe and well. I keep praying for them, and keep thinking what I can do for them.

Bike ride

The last time I owned a bicycle... I think that I was thirteen years old. I had just moved to New York City from Tokyo, and I asked my dad to get me a bike. My dad bought me a very fancy one for a high speed..., but of course as a flaky teenager I got bored with it in a few months, and the bike got rusted sitting in the corner of our terrace... I will see how it goes with this new one I've got!

It is only a few minutes ride to the Balboa Park from our house. We biked to the museums, and found this Henry Moore piece.

This lovely section is called the Spanish Village. It is a colony of many galleries and artists. The small alleys remind me of the beautiful villages in Spain and/or the Mediterranean towns. It is an easy ride from home. No big hills. Just flat. I love it!

Swami Beach, Swami Cafe and the Swami

At least five people in New York told us to go to Encinitas, CA. It is a classic surfer's town where many liberals and intellectuals live. There is a famous ashtanga yoga guru living here, too..., but the most famous spot in this lovely town is the ashram of Paramahansa Yogananda. He was one of the first yogis who brought Eastern philosophy and spirituality to the West. The entrance of the ashram was grand, and it made me feel as if I was in India, but when I saw this 'surfer sign' it made me realize that I was in So-Cal, indeed.

The Meditation Garden of the ashram was breathtakingly beautiful. There were colorful flowers and plants everywhere. There were big carps in the ponds. There were benches everywhere for you to sit and meditate... or to gaze into this gorgeous Swami Beach.

My favorite black cactus roses were there, too.

The ashram is supposed to be Hindu, but there was this lovely painting of St. Francis at the garden.

After spending a few hours at the garden we went to the Swami Cafe across the street.

The portion was huge! It seemed that more I ate more food appeared on the plate!

What to do after the lunch? A nap, of course! We went down to the Swami Beach, and took a long nap under the tree. All I heard was the sound of flying seagulls. I felt "enlightened" for two seconds, but woke up craving for a cup of tea. So it began. After the Swami ashram, the Swami Cafe, Swami this, Swami that... it is not so easy to be enlightened after all!

Desert Roses

I am totally obsessed with those desert roses! When I first saw this eerie black cactus I freaked out, indeed. I was walking my dog near my house, and I encountered two gigantic black desert roses. They were the size of a human face! I went back the next day with a camera, but they were gone. Obviously someone had taken them...! How terrible is that?

There are strange looking cacti everywhere here in San Diego. We went to the Cactus Garden at Balboa Park. Let me tell you, it was weird and wonderful! I felt like as if I was in a sci-fi movie. There were so many eerie looking cacti, and of course, there were my desert roses, too! Black, green, gray... you name them.

This one (photo above) was so strange. They had the shape of a serving tray! I wonder that that is how they keep the water... ??? Oh my goodness, there are so many fantastic plants on this earth!
