Canelés and I カヌレと私

Caneles are my favorite sweets in the world. This photo is my breakfast - a couple of
caneles and a cup of homemade chai tea. They taste wonderful together!

マイフェバレートスイーツのトップ３に入るカヌレ。
上の写真は、私の不健康な朝食。自家製チャイと一緒に
いただくと最高です！

Caneles began at a convent in Bordeaux, France in the 17th Century. The first time I
ever tasted the caneles was not in France - it was in Tokyo. Being totally overwhelmed
by the heavenly caneles I ate five or six of them. The photo above is the caneles at
my favorite bakery, Balthazar in New York. I usually buy a dozen, and eat them every
day ;p

１７世紀頃、フランスのボルドーの修道院で作られ
出したといわれるカヌレを一番最初に味わったのは、
なんとフランスではなく１９８０年代初期の東京でした。
その美味しさに感動しながら、なんと一気に５つも
食べてしまったのを覚えています。上の写真は、
私の大好きなニューヨークのバルタザールのカヌレ。
いつも１ダースくらい買い込んで食べています。ふふふ

However, there is a problem. There is not a single French bakery that makes
caneles near my house in Socal. So when I go back to NYC often I make sure
to eat the caneles every day! Also, in San Francisco where I visit often I buy
dozens of them to bring back to Socal, and I rap each one of them and freeze
them, so that I can eat them whenever I want.

I've heard that there has been a huge caneles fever in Japan recently.
I've loved caneles, I still love caneles and I will always love caneles!

ところが、南カリフォルニアの自宅近辺にはカヌレを
作っているフレンチベイカリーがありません。なので
ちょくちょく帰っているニューヨークでは、ほぼ毎日
カヌレを食べる始末！そして、時々訪れるサンフランシスコ
では、ラ・ブランジュで何十個と買い込んで、ひとつひとつをラップで
包んで冷凍して、時々出しては楽しんでいます。

つい最近聞いたのですが、日本でも一時、
カヌレブームだったとか？私はブーム関係無しに昔も今も
将来もずっとカヌレファンです！

San Francisco2~La Boulange~ サンフランシスコ２〜美味しいフレンチスイーツはここ！〜

Every morning I went to La Boulange, a famous French bakery in San Francisco that was near the hotel we were staying. I stuffed myself with canneles, almond croissants and brioches. I could easily have three or four canneles!

 ホテルの近くのサンフランのパティスリーを代表する
「ラ・ブランジュ」に毎朝通い、大好きなカヌレやアーモンド
クロワッサン、ブリオシュなどを平らげました。カヌレは
３～４個は軽くペロリ！

It made me so happy to see the fresh olives, cornichons, lemon slices, etc. for everyone to take... How generous is that!

このカフェには、オリーブ、コニション、レモンのスライス
などが用意されていて、自由に食べれるようになって
います。なんて親切！

 And, the real silver wares, and no plastic spoons and folks! Formidable!

そして、シルバーウエアもプラスティックでなく、
本物。素晴らしい！

La Boulange opened the first bakery in San Francisco, and now there are seventeen shops in town. Recently it got bought out by Starbucks. According to a bakery staff it may open in other states in a near future. Some locals are happy, some are not - "The quality has gone down already, so I don't want them to be bigger anymore." "It will be great to be able to buy wonderful French pastries every where!" 
Humm... it is a tough one. However, it is certainly a good thing to be able to enjoy the French sweets at every where at any time. There is no question about it!

サンフランで始まったこのフレンチベイカリーは、
今やサンフラン内だけでも１７店舗となり、最近
スターバックスに買収されたそうです。店員さんの
お話によると、他の州での展開も予定されている
とか、、。サンフランのローカルたちに言わせると、
「すでに質が落ちた。これ以上増えないでほしい」
という声もあれば、「スタバのようにあちこちで、
こんなに美味しいフレンチペイストリーが食べれる
ようになれば最高」という意見も。

う～ん、むずかしいところ。でもやっぱり気軽に美味しい
スイーツが食べれるようになるということには異議無し
です！
