Canelés and I カヌレと私

Caneles are my favorite sweets in the world. This photo is my breakfast - a couple of
caneles and a cup of homemade chai tea. They taste wonderful together!

マイフェバレートスイーツのトップ３に入るカヌレ。
上の写真は、私の不健康な朝食。自家製チャイと一緒に
いただくと最高です！

Caneles began at a convent in Bordeaux, France in the 17th Century. The first time I
ever tasted the caneles was not in France - it was in Tokyo. Being totally overwhelmed
by the heavenly caneles I ate five or six of them. The photo above is the caneles at
my favorite bakery, Balthazar in New York. I usually buy a dozen, and eat them every
day ;p

１７世紀頃、フランスのボルドーの修道院で作られ
出したといわれるカヌレを一番最初に味わったのは、
なんとフランスではなく１９８０年代初期の東京でした。
その美味しさに感動しながら、なんと一気に５つも
食べてしまったのを覚えています。上の写真は、
私の大好きなニューヨークのバルタザールのカヌレ。
いつも１ダースくらい買い込んで食べています。ふふふ

However, there is a problem. There is not a single French bakery that makes
caneles near my house in Socal. So when I go back to NYC often I make sure
to eat the caneles every day! Also, in San Francisco where I visit often I buy
dozens of them to bring back to Socal, and I rap each one of them and freeze
them, so that I can eat them whenever I want.

I've heard that there has been a huge caneles fever in Japan recently.
I've loved caneles, I still love caneles and I will always love caneles!

ところが、南カリフォルニアの自宅近辺にはカヌレを
作っているフレンチベイカリーがありません。なので
ちょくちょく帰っているニューヨークでは、ほぼ毎日
カヌレを食べる始末！そして、時々訪れるサンフランシスコ
では、ラ・ブランジュで何十個と買い込んで、ひとつひとつをラップで
包んで冷凍して、時々出しては楽しんでいます。

つい最近聞いたのですが、日本でも一時、
カヌレブームだったとか？私はブーム関係無しに昔も今も
将来もずっとカヌレファンです！

India 1 ~New York~ インドへの旅１〜ニューヨーク〜

The place I had to stop by before my departure for India was Balthazar. I'm a huge fan of the cannelles of this bakery, and I bought only six and ate them all. I had to get energy for India, you know?

NYからインドへ発つ前に寄ったのはマイフェヴァレイトの
バルタザール。ここのベイカリーのカヌレが大好きで６つも買って全部
ペロリ。そう、インドはハードなので体力つけなくてはネ！笑
As I was stuffing the cannelles into my mouth I walked to the Union Sq... to pay a tribute to someone who is "walking" quietly at the corner of the park. Yes, that is Gandhi. I had to see the Father of India before leaving for India. I prayed for a safe trip, and left for Delhi. (To be continued.)

この公園で一角にひっそりと独り「歩いている」のは、
かのガンジーです。インドに行く前にはやはりこの方に
敬意を表さなくては、、、！インドの父に無事な旅を

The must list in New York NYマストリスト

I know, I know... you are saying, "My goodness, you went there again?" That is right, I did. I went to Jackson Diner in Queens again just to have this dosa. Of course I can get dosa anywhere else in the city, but I enjoy going there. I know all the waiters there and a chef who makes dosa for you. We chat, laugh, gossip... it is just a nice experience that I have been enjoying over 10 years.

分かってます、分かってます。「ええ？また行ったの？」と思っておられるのでしょう？そうですよ〜行きましたよ〜。ドサを食べにクイーンズ地区にあるジャクソンダイナーに。ドサはマンハッタンのどこでも食べることができるのですが、ここに行くのが楽しいんです。ウエイターも皆か顔見知りだし、ドサを作ってくれるシェフも。みんなとおしゃべりしたり、笑ったり、ゴシップしたり、、そんな時間もステキなんです。１０年以上そうして来ました。



The last few times I went to Balthazar those delicious canelles were always sold out, and today I finally got them! However, I bought them right after my lunch there, so I am saving them for later. They smell so good :) The canelles and dosa. They are only a few items of my must list!

ここ最近２、３度バルタザールに行くたびに、このカヌレが売り切れでした。今日やっとゲット！でもバルタザールでのゴージャスなランチの後だったので、後でいただくことにしました。甘〜い香が漂います。カヌレとドサ。ニューヨークでのマストリストの、ほんの一部です！

New York ~ NoLita~ ニューヨーク、ノリータ

It was raining so heavily in New York, but it did not stop me from going downtown. I lived in SoHo for 15 years, then in NoLita for 4 years, so I could not wait to go there. I hopped in the subway and got off at Bleeker Street. It was so nice to be in NoLita visiting all my favorite places and say hello. There were some new stores and restaurants. Soooo good to be home!!!

ニューヨークは豪雨でしたが、ダウンタウンへとすぐに向かいました。ソーホーに１５年、ノリータに４年住んだ私はやっぱりここが良い。地下鉄に乗ってブリーカーストリートで降りました。ノリータの大好きなショップやレストランに行って挨拶をするのが楽しかったです。沢山新しいお店もできていました。う〜ん、やっぱり戻って来たって感じで幸せ！



And of course I stopped at Balthazar, one of my favorite, favorite restaurants in downtown. When they first opened this legendary place I was invited to to the opening. It was such a scene... everyone was there! I saw every single super model, famous designers, movie stars and oh my god, everyone was there. Many years have passed, but it is still a very special place! *To be continued...*

そして、もちろんバルタザールにも行きましたよ。ダウンタウンで私のフェバレート。かつて、この伝説的なレストランのオープニングナイトに招待されて行った私でした。もうそれはそれは凄い顔ぶれでした！当時のスーパーモデルはみんないた。有名デザイナーたち、映画スターたちもワンサカ。あんなに一度にレセブを見たのは初めてでした。あれからもう長年の月日が経った今でも、とってもステキなブラッセリーです！＊続く、、＊

Back to New York! 再びニューヨークへ

I am off to New York City soon. I am going home... my sweet home! It's been 10 months since I left for beautiful SoCal, and I've thought about New York every single day. I miss it so much that I can feel it as if I am there when I close my eyes. New York is extraordinary. There is no such a place on Earth like the Big Apple! What am I going to do there? Easy. Shop, eat, shop, eat and shop. Oh, and the museums, of course. Oh, and seeing my friends, of course!

もうすぐニューヨークへ発ちます。お家へ返るんです。スイートホームへ！この美しい楽園南カリフォルニアに移って１０ヶ月。毎日ニューヨークのことを思い出さない日はありませんでした。恋しくなれば目をつむると、まるでそこに自分がいるように感じるんです。NYは特別の街。こんな場所は他にありません！NYで何をするのかって？答えは簡単。ショッピング、食べる、ショッピング、食べる。そしてまたショッピング。あ、そうそう美術館巡りも。あ、そうそう、もちろん友人たちとの再会も楽しみ〜！ああ、友達と言えば私の弟みたいな桐島ローランド君もちょうど同じ時期にNY。でもお互い忙しいので会えるかなあ〜。




I lived on West Broadway in SoHo for 15 years, then in NoLita for 4 years after that. NoLita was right next to the Little Italy, and I used pass this Italian deli everyday to enjoy their beautiful home made pasta display in the window. There are so many great restaurants in NYC, and I am definitely going to dine at my friend chef Eric Ripert's Le Bernardin, the best restaurant in NYC. Too bad that Eric won't be in NYC so I will miss him... Also at my old hang out places such as, Balthazar, Hampton Chutney, NoHo Star, Jackson Diner, Babbo, Turkish Kitchen and so on! And for shopping, I will check out all those small independent stores in NoLita and SoHo. Barbara Bui, one of my favorite designer, Reinstein & Ross, my favorite jewelry shop where my wedding & engagement rings come from, INA, Selima's... just to name a few.

私はソーホーのウエストブロードウエイのロフトに１５年、その後ノリータに４年住みました。ノリータはリトルイタリーの真横なので、毎日のように、この手作りパスタのウインドウディスプレイが美しいイタリアンデリの前を通ったものです。NYには素晴らしいレストランがわんさか。絶対に行く予定をしているのが、友人のセレブシェフ、エリック・リペールのル・ベルナルダン。ちょうどエリックはNYにいないので会えないのが残念。そして私が通い続けたフェバレイト：バルタザー、ハンプトンチャトニー、ノーホースター、ジャクソンダイナー（クイーンズ）、バブ、ターキッシュキッチン、、。
そしてショッピングは、ノリータやソーホーのショップ。大好きなバーバラブイ、結婚＆婚約指輪をお願いしたラインスタイン＆ロスという美しい宝石店。イナ、セリマ、、、をはじめ、まだいっぱいあります。



This intersection of Prince St. and Broadway was my daily walk. I can still smell the smoke from the street vendor at that corner. I shall stop at Dean & DeLuca to get some tea and a Planet Doughnut... or perhaps icy cold cardamon coffee at the Hampton Chutney instead... or perhaps both...

このプリンス通りとブロードウエイの交差点は、私の毎日のお散歩ルートでした。角の屋台の煙の臭いが今でもするくらいです。ディーンアンドデルーカで、紅茶とプラネットドーナッツでも買おうかな。それか、ハンムトンチャトニーの冷た〜いカルダモンコーヒーが良いかな。この際、両方にしようかな、、、




And believe or not, I cannot wait to take the subway! No, I am not kidding. I miss the subways. I am so happy that I do not have to drive anywhere and I can just hop into the subway! New York, New York, here I come. Get ready for the hurricane Rima!

そして信じられないことに、地下鉄に乗るのが待ち遠しいんです！冗談じゃありませんよ。マジで地下鉄が恋しい。ニューヨークでは車の運転をせずに、どこからでも地下鉄に乗れるのがたまりません！ニューヨークよ、もうすぐ行きますぞ。台風リーマにご用事！
