Another Tibetan self-immolated the other day in Tibet. There have been more than 35 Tibetans self-immolated this year. They are sacrificing their lives to call for the international help. As my heart sunk my sorrow was soothed by a beautiful poem from Deepa Mehta's masterpiece flm, "1947 Earth," and the music was written by a genius composer, A.F.Rahman. It's called, "Ishwar Allah Tere Jahaan Mein" and you can hear it on youtube. I found the English translation from Hindi, so I have translated into Japanese myself. This poem moves my heart over and over again. May the light fill the darkness in the world...

Ishwar and Allah, why is there hatred and war in your world.
Your heart is so expansive, why are the hearts of humans so narrow?

When all the land belongs to you, why are there boundaries drawn at every step?
Despite the Sun guarding the earth why is there so much darkness on Earth?
Why is there colour of blood on the ‘daaman’ of the world?

So many screams echo, who can possibly listen to any talks of love?
So many dreams are shattering, who can sift through them?

There are locks on the doors of heart, why is there rust on those locks?

昨日もまたチベットで焼身自殺がありました。今年に入ってもう３５人を超えるチベット人たちが、自らを犠牲にすることによって、世界に助けを訴えています。 沈みきった心を癒してくれたのは、私が大好きなひとつの詩。ディーパ・メータ監督の傑作映画「1947 Earth」の名曲で、曲は天才作曲家、A.F.Rahmanが書きました。"Ishwar Allah Tere Jahaan Mein"　という曲で、youtubeでも聴くことができます。ヒンズー語の歌の英訳をみつけたので、それを和訳してみました。何度読んでも心に響きます。世界中の暗闇に光が差す日が訪れますように、、。

イシャラの神様、アラーの神様、

どうして、あなたの世界に憎しみと戦があるのでしょうか？

あなたの心はとても広いのに、どうして人々
の心はこんなに狭いのでしょうか？

全ての地はあなたのものなのに、どうして一歩毎に境界線があるのでしょうか？

太陽が地球を守っているのに、どうして地球にはこんなに多くの闇があるのでしょうか？

この世のダマンに、どうして血の色があるのでしょうか？

多くの悲鳴が響く中で、誰が愛の語らいに耳を傾けることができるでしょうか？

多くの夢が砕け散る中で、誰が夢を吟味することができるでしょうか？

心の扉に鍵がかけられています、どうしてその鍵は錆びているのでしょうか？

India 6~The Dalai Lama~ インドへの旅６〜ダライ・ラマ法王〜

As it's written in the special feature on my trip to India in the SPUR magazine (June issue) I was fortunate enough to have an audience with H.H. The Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. Although I have met him many times in the past it was my second official audience. My main purpose was to report him that I had created my fourth children's book on the environmental issue, and had donated them to seventy seven Tibetan refugee schools in exile, as I promised him two years ago.

あるように、絵本を届けに行ったインドのダラムサラ
では、ダライ・ラマ法王との正式謁見がありました。
猊下とお会いする機会には沢山恵まれていますが、
正式謁見はこれで２度目。２年前に環境をテーマに
した絵本を作るお約束をし、今回はそのご報告です。
絵本をインド、ネパール、ブータンにある７７つの
チベット難民学校へ寄付したこともお伝えしました。

Usually my head goes blank in front of The Dalai Lama, get very emotional and end up crying. However, this time, I held back my tears hard and focused on my report. Yet, when he gave me a khata (a white greeting scarf) I sobbed again. There was a man, in front of me in India, who should be sitting at his Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. He has been in exile over fifty years working tirelessly for his people and country. I keep praying for his return to Tibet along with many, many Tibetans very soon, and shall continue whatever I can to help Tibet, a beautiful, beautiful country.

いつも目の前にダライ・ラマ法王がおられると
頭の中が真っ白になりそうな私です。でも今回は
溢れそうな涙をこらえ、きちんとお話をしました。
でも、最後にカタ（挨拶の白いスカーフ）をいただいた
時は涙がチョロ～り。本来は、チベットのポタラ宮殿に
おられるべき方が、こうして５０年以上も前に亡命
したインドで、私にまで優しくして下さるのですから、、。
一日も早く、ダライ・ラマ法王とチベット人たちが
故郷チベットへ戻れる日が来ることを祈ります。

Shangri-La is disappearing 消えて行くシャングリラ

When I saw this photo that someone had posted in facebook I couldn't believe that it was a real photo. It is just too beautiful. However, this is how Tibet has been and still is... well, not any longer.

あるチベット人がフェイスブックに載せたこの写真を見た時、これが本当の写真だとは信じられませんでした。あまりにも美しすぎて。でも、チベットはずっとこんな感じだったのですね、そして今日も、、。少なくともあと少しの間は。




For centuries the Tibetans have lived harmoniously with nature. They've honored the nature because without it they wouldn't be able to survive.

何世紀にもわたってチベット人たちは、自然と仲良くして生きて来ました。自然を大切にしないと自分たちが生きて行けないことをよく知っていたのですね。




However, this beautifully balanced-life in Tibet is disappearing. The nomads are forced into the modern life style, the vast land has been destroyed for minerals, and too many trees have been cut off. Global warming is melting the glaciers that's creating floods, and deforestation is also the cause of the endless mudslides. This monk was recently arrested by the Chinese government for no reasons, and no one knows where he is.

でも、このチベットの自然と調和した素晴らしい生き方は、消えつつあります。遊牧民たちは近代化した生活をするように強制され、広大な土地はミネラルを採る大工事のため破壊され、沢山の木々も切られています。温暖化のため、氷河が溶け洪水となっています。過剰な森林伐採も絶えない土砂崩れの原因です。このチベット人のお坊さんは、先週、理由も無く中国政府に逮捕され、未だに行方が分っていません。

The Dalai Lama's 76th B'day ダライラマ法王の７６歳誕生日

July 6 is the Dalai Lama's birthday, and now he is 76 years old. He was "discovered" by the search team when he was 2 years old, and was throned at age 4. At the age 15 he fled from Tibet to India due to the Communist China's invasion in Tibet. He often calls himself a "homeless" and laughs. He's living in exile since 1959.

７月６日はダライラマ法王の誕生日です。今年で７６歳になられました。彼は２歳の時に「サーチティーム」に「発見」され、４歳で即位。１５歳の時、共産党中国にチベットを侵略され、インドに亡命しました。よく彼は「私はホームレスだ」と笑います。１９５９年からずっと祖国から離れインドに住んでおられるのです。

お母さんの膝の上は赤ちゃんダライラマ。彼はよく母親の話をしますが、それはそれはとても優しく慈悲深い女性だったそうです。父親は短気で怖かったとか。笑

The Dalai Lama has a great sense of humor. Every time I see him he jokes all the time!

ダライラマ法王はユーモアセンスたっぷりの方で、いつもジョークを飛ばします！



There was a huge birthday celebration for him today in Washington D.C. with the honorable guests - the grand son of Mahatma Gandhi and the son of Martin Luther King Jr. Actually, I was asked to present a "kata" (a white greeting scarf) to the Dalai Lama on stage as a representative from Japan, but I could not make it to D.C. because I was sick. I was so disappointed to miss this honorable opportunity, but my good friend was able to do it, so I was happy. The representatives from each country offered kata to the Dalai Lama on stage. ワシントンDC訪問中のダライラマ法王のために、大きなお誕生日イベントが開催されました。ガンジーの孫、マーティンルーサーキングの息子さんが名誉ゲストでした。実は私は、このイベントで日本代表としてダライラマ法王にカタ（挨拶に使う白いスカーフ）をプレゼントしてくれませんか？というオファーをいただいたのですが、あいにく体調が悪かったため、DCまで行くことができませんでした。こんな名誉なことを断るはめになってしまい、ひどくがっかりしたのですが、幸いにもDCに住む私の友人（日系アメリカ人）が代わりにしてくれることになり、一安心。各国の代表がダライラマ法王にカタをプレゼントしました（写真はベトナムの代表）。



So I offered him this lily of the valley from my garden. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, you are my inspiration. I have seen you with my own eyes that you treat everyone equally - young or old, man or woman, rich or poor, famous or non famous, Buddhist or non Buddhist... you have made me get up again and again when I've fallen. I thank you for your tireless work for the people and the world, and I pray that you and your people will return to your homeland, Tibet, very, very soon, and I will keep trying whatever I can to make it happen.

私はお庭で育てたスズランをダライラマ法王に捧げました。ダライラマ法王、あなたは私のインスピレーションです。私は自分の目で何度も、あなたが皆に対して同じように接しているのを見ました。老人、若者、男性、女性、お金持ち、貧乏人、有名人、無名人、仏教徒、仏教徒でない者、、、。世の中の人々のために休むことなく動いておられる。心から感謝します。あなたとチベット人たちが、一日も早く祖国チベットへ戻れますよう祈ります。そしてそれを実現させるために、私もできることは続けます。

More photos from my opening have arrived. These were taken by my lovely friend, Teresa Heath. Those ladies whom I was talking to were about to go to Tibet, and they were so excited. They asked me how I enjoyed Tibet, and when I told them that I had never beet to Tibet they were so surprised. Actually I don't know if I ever will go to Tibet in this life time... I do want to go, of course, but at the same time I am so scared to see the Tibetans' lives under the severe Chinese occupation.



ビバリーヒルズでの個展オープニングの写真がまた届きました。これらは友人の写真家のテレサ・ヒースが撮ってくれたもの。この上の写真で私がお話をしている奥様たちは、近々チベットへ行くのだと目をキラキラと輝かせて私に言うのです。「あなたはチベット楽しんだ？」と聞かれた私が、チベットにはまだ行っていないと答えると、かなりビックリしておられました。実は、私はチベットに生涯行けるかどうかは分かりません、、。もちろん行きたい気持ちは一杯ですが、支配下できつい生活をしているチベット人を見たくない気持ちも強いからです、、。



There were so many people whom I did not have a chance to talk to... 　



オープニングではお話するチャンスが無かった方々がいっぱい、、、。



The galley says that many people are visiting my exhibition every day, and are enjoying my art. Some friends of mine who did not make it to the opening have been checking out my show including a friend from Scotland and my long-time friend, Koshi Inaba who is one of the top rock stars in Japan happened to be in LA, and went to my exhibition... and purchased a piece of the snow leopard babies. Not only he is one of the biggest collectors of my work he's been a strong supporter of my work and a dear friend. Other clients purchased a tiger piece and others... people love animals, and especially those animals I've drawn are endangered animals of the Himalayas. May those animals live long and be happy!



ギャラリーには毎日多くの人々が絵を見に来てくださっています。オープニングに来れなかった友人たちも色んなところから駆けつけてくれていて、先日は、スコットランドの友人や、LAにいた稲葉浩志君が来てくれて、しかも雪豹の赤ちゃんの作品を購入してくれました。彼は私の作品の最大なコレクターの一人だけでなく、長年の応援者で、親友でもあります。他のアメリカ人のクライアントの方々は、虎の作品などを購入して下さいました。人間の多くは動物が好きですよね。特にヒマラヤの絶滅の危機に瀕している動物たち、、。これらの生き物が、長く長く幸せに暮らせますように、、！

Historical moment for Tibet チベットの歴史的瞬間

As of the end of March this year His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama stepped down from the politics. He resigned as a political leader of the Tibetan government of exile. This is a huge change in Tibet's history since the dalai lamas had been ruling the government for many centuries, and I must say that this is a historical moment. Since the 60's the Dalai Lama has been saying to the Tibetans, "Our political leader should be chosen by people," and he recently said, "The political rule by the spiritual leaders and rajas are now outdated." He officially stepped down despite many opposition. When I heard the news I cried. Tears rolled down as I felt happy for him - he's worked so hard. He is truly a very smart man. He knows that the world is changing, and that the young Tibetans want a political leader who is not a monk.




今年の３月末、ダライラマ１４世が正式に政治から離れました。チベットの歴史では、今までずっと何代にもわたってダライラマたちがチベットの政治的リーダーでもありスピリチュアルリーダーでもあったのです。これは革命的とも言える大きな変化なのです。６０年代からダライラマ１４世は、「政治はチベット国民が投票してリーダーを選ぶべきだ」と主張してきたにも関わらず、そうはいかなかったのが現実でした。「スピリチュアルリーダーやラジャ（王）たちが政治をリードすることはもう時代遅れだ」とダライラマは発言し、多くの反対を押し切って辞任したのです。このニュースを聞いた時、涙が流れました。ダライラマのためを想って嬉しかったのです。働き過ぎというほど働いて来られたから、、。そして彼はとてもスマートです。今の若いチベタンたちが、僧侶でない政治リーダーを求めていることを、よ〜く知っておられる。




I wonder if the Dalai Lama will be meeting the world political leaders less frequently from now on...? 　今後、ダライラマ法王が世界の政治リーダーたちと会見することは減って行くのでしょうか、、？



The Tibetans, the young and old, all love and respect the Dalai Lama. However, many young Tibetans seek "independence" of Tibet that contradicts the Dalai Lama's middle way policy. They feel that they have to be more responsible about Tibet's future and get more involved with their politics. On March 20 the election for the next Kalon Tripa (prime minister of the Tibetan government in exile) took place world wide. So many Tibetans went to vote including many elderly Tibetans of age 90! The photo below is the three leading candidates for the next prime minister. From left, Tashi Wangdi, Tenzin Tethong and Lobsang Sangay. I personally know them all, and they are all very smart, talented and great candidates. At the end of April this year the government will announce the newly elected prime minister. Until then, we just have to wait as we hope for the stronger Tibet's future!



チベット人たちは若者もお年寄りも、皆、ダライラマ法王を敬愛しています。でも多くの若者たちは「独立」を希望しており、それはダライラマ法王の「ミドルウエイ（中論）アプローチ」に反することになるのです。若者たちは、過去してきたようにダライラマだけに任せるだけでなく、もっとチベット人たちが責任を持って自分たちの「国」を動かして行かなければならない、、と思うようになったのです。３月２０日にワールドワイドで投票が行われました。次のカロントリパ（総理大臣）を決めるためのもので、今までにないくらいの規模の大行事となり、多くのチベタンたちが投票したのです。中には９０歳のお年寄りたちも沢山いました！上の写真は、立候補した中のトップをリードしている３人。左からタシ・ウオンディ、テンジ・ンテトン、ロブサン・サンゲイ氏たち。結果は４月末に発表される予定です。それまで、私たちは皆、チベットの力強い未来にむけて希望と共に待つ、、べし！
